Diabetes Drug Fights Breast Cancer - WebMD, 9/14/09 -
"And in mice carrying human
breast cancers,
metformin
made standard chemotherapy vastly more effective. Mice treated with the
combination remain cancer-free for four months, unlike mice treated with either
drug alone ... A lot of data shows lower cancer risk -- not just breast cancer
-- in people taking metformin for diabetes ... This drug at low doses can be
considered a very good candidate for cancer
prevention before a person has any cancer at all" - Note: I've been

Bathroom Showers May Deliver Face Full Of Pathogens, Says Study - Science
Daily, 9/14/09 - "increases in pulmonary infections in
the United States in recent decades from so-called "non-tuberculosis"
mycobacteria species like M. avium may be linked to people taking more showers
and fewer baths ... Water spurting from showerheads can distribute
pathogen-filled droplets that suspend themselves in the air and can easily be
inhaled into the deepest parts of the lungs ... Symptoms of pulmonary disease
caused by M. avium can include tiredness, a persistent, dry cough, shortness of
breath, weakness and "generally feeling bad," ... mmune-compromised people like
pregnant women, the elderly and those who are fighting off other diseases are
more prone to experience such symptoms ... plastic showerheads appear to "load
up" with more pathogen-enriched biofilms, metal showerheads may be a good
alternative"

The Many
Causes Of Immune Deficiency - Science Daily, 9/14/09 -
"Defects of the immune system lead to increased
susceptibility to infection, autoimmune diseases
(e.g. inflammatory rheumatism), allergies and sometimes even cancer ... The most
common causes worldwide include malnutrition, poor sanitary conditions and human
immune deficiency virus (HIV) infection. Other causes of temporary or permanent
damage to the immune system include old age, medications (e.g. cortisone,
cytostatic drugs), radiotherapy, stress after surgery and malignant tumors of
the bone marrow and the lymph nodes"
Vaccine
Expert Advises: Immunization Should Be Given As Early In Life As Possible -
Science Daily, 9/14/09 - "Many parents would prefer to
postpone the vaccination of their babies until these are older, by fear that
their young immune system would be too weak or overwhelmed by the vaccines. In
contrast, pediatricians insist that babies should be immunized as rapidly as
possible after birth against the most dreadful microbes causing bacterial
meningitis or whooping cough. These infections can cause irreversible damage or
even kill the children"

Early
Data Show H1N1 Vaccine Is Highly Effective - Time, 9/10/09 -
"The researchers calculate that every person infected by
the virus will go onto infect another 1.3 to 1.7 people on average ...
Preliminary data from the Australian trial showed that 21 days after getting one
shot, 96% of the 240 trial volunteers aged 18 to 64 years generated an
impressive amount of antibodies to the virus. The results were "unanticipated,"
according to the authors; health officials had expected that people would need
two doses of the vaccine for full protection, because H1N1 is a new flu virus to
most of the population ... The virus will be with us for many years to come in
many forms ... It's important to start building up resistance now"
Vaccination Of 70 Percent Of US Population Could Control Swine Flu Pandemic
- Science Daily, 9/10/09 - "An aggressive vaccination
program that first targets children and ultimately reaches 70 percent of the
U.S. population would mitigate pandemic influenza H1N1 that is expected this
fall"
Note: That’s something to think about. If you don’t get
the flu shot you also hurting others by not containing the pandemic. I’m
not a doctor but here’s the way I understand it. When you get the flu
shot, what you are getting are dead viruses and your body builds immunity
against that specific virus and a partial immunity against some similar viruses.
I’m sure that immunity decreases over the years but not completely.
Elderly that were exposed to the Swine virus as far back as 1918 are still
partially immune (click here for the
video). A flu virus is most likely to be life threatening if it’s a virus
totally different than anything you immune system has seen before. So by
getting the shot ever year, you decrease the chances of that happening.
Also, I read several years ago that the flu can cause permanent damage to organs
such as the heart that can catch up to you later in life.
For people concerned about the mercury, some flu shots do have as much mercury
as a small 6 ounce can of tuna. Some argue that the form in the vaccine
(ethylmercury in the thimerosal in vaccines) may be more lethal than the form in
fish (methylmercury). I don’t believe there have been any studies to
prove or disprove that. The form in the vaccine is eliminated from the
body faster so it seems that it would have to be much more toxic to make up for
that. There are flu vaccines with no or trace amounts of thimerosal. There
are vaccines that are mercury free (thimerosal, which is 49% 49% ethylmercury)
free. Thimerosal free vaccines are more expensive because they need to be
packaged differently such as in single vials.

the list. Click here for my web
page on mercury in vaccines.
NNii : Immunization Science - National Network for Immunization Information
- "Ethylmercury is much more rapidly excreted than
methylmercury. Based upon the prevaccination blood levels in 6-months old
infants, ethylmercury does not appear to accumulate after routine immunizations.
Because samples also contained methylmercury, the measured blood levels may have
overestimated the amount of ethylmercury present—but the levels were low in any
case. Because 24-hour collections of stool were not tested, how much and how
fast all of the administered ethylmercury is eliminated can not yet be
estimated; it appears likely that most of the dose is rapidly excreted, however
... Because injected ethylmercury is much more rapidly excreted than
methylmercury, exposure guidelines developed for the oral consumption of
methylmercury were and are not accurate for the assessment of risk for infants
who receive thimerosal-containing vaccines"
Back in the 50’s there were people who would not install seat belts because they
heard of someone dying because they wore them even though the odds of dying by
not wearing one was much greater, not even close. I see vaccines the same way.
36,000 people die each year of the flu. Last year was high at 57,000. That’s as
much as the entire 10 years of the Vietnam War.

Prevalence Of HPV Infection May Be Tied To Poor Prognosis For Blacks With
Head And Neck Cancer - Science Daily, 7/29/09 -
"Only 4 percent of black patients with squamous cell carcinoma in the study
were HPV-positive, compared with 34 percent of white patients. The median
overall survival was more than three-fold higher for whites (70.6 months)
than for blacks (20.9 months) who were treated with chemotherapy and
radiation. Dr. Cullen says the survival rate at five years for HPV-positive
patients was about 85 percent, compared to 35 percent for HPV-negative
patients. Survival was similar for HPV-negative patients, regardless of
race. The study's findings confirm that HPV infection relates specifically
to a type of head and neck cancer -- cancer of the oropharynx, which include
the tonsils, soft palate and base of the tongue ... Overall, about 25
percent of head and neck cancers are tied to HPV infection"

Sharp Increase In HPV-positive Tonsil Cancer Found - Science Daily,
4/2/09 - "Because the tumours produce so few
symptoms, patients seek medical care when the disease is relatively
advanced, often after the tumours have spread to the lymph glands of the
throat, possibly making the prognosis much worse ... More recent studies,
however, have demonstrated a link between HPV and tonsil cancer, so that
today an HPV infection is also one of the established risk factors ... Since
1970, the cumulative incidence of HPV-positive tonsil cancer has increased
from 23 to 93 per cent"

HPV-related oral cancers rise among younger men - baltimoresun.com,
4/14/08 - "They're men in their 40s, and even 30s,
whose cancer is brought on by the increasingly common human papillomavirus
(HPV) ... researchers now believe that the increase in certain oral cancers
can be traced to the spread of the virus through oral sex ... New studies

Incidence trends for
human papillomavirus-related and -unrelated oral squamous cell carcinomas in
the United States - J Clin Oncol. 2008 Feb 1;26(4):612-9 -
"oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) ... Life-table analyses were used to
compare 2-year overall survival for HPV-related and HPV-unrelated OSCCs.
RESULTS: HPV-related OSCCs were diagnosed at younger ages than HPV-unrelated
OSCCs (mean ages at diagnosis, 61.0 and 63.8 years, respectively; P < .001).
Incidence increased significantly for HPV-related OSCC from 1973 to 2004
(annual percentage change [APC] = 0.80; P < .001), particularly among white
men and at younger ages. By contrast, incidence for HPV-unrelated OSCC was
stable through 1982 (APC = 0.82; P = .186) and declined significantly during
1983 to 2004 (APC = -1.85; P < .001). When treated with radiation,
improvements in 2-year survival across calendar periods were more pronounced
for HPV-related OSCCs (absolute increase in survival from 1973 through 1982
to 1993 through 2004 for localized, regional, and distant stages = 9.9%,
23.1%, and 18.6%, respectively) than HPV-unrelated OSCCs (5.6%, 3.1%, and
9.9%, respectively). During 1993 to 2004, for all stages treated with
radiation, patients with HPV-related OSCCs had significantly higher survival
rates than those with HPV-unrelated OSCCs"

Oral sex-related cancer at 30-year high - New Scientist, 2/28/08 -
"The incidence of oral cancer due to a virus
transmitted during oral sex has increased steeply over the last 30 years ...
The rise was largest among young white males, suggesting this group is more
likely to have oral sex at a younger age now than it was 20 years ago ...
What is not in doubt, says Gillison, is the need to consider giving boys the
HPV vaccine, to protect them from the disease ... These strains are also
thought to cause oral cancer, as well as penile and anal cancer"

New Role
Of Vitamin C In Skin Protection; Relevance To The Cosmetics Industry -
Science Daily, 9/8/09 - "a form of
Vitamin C helped to promote wound healing and
also helped protect the DNA damage of skin cells ... Previously, the group has
published evidence that DNA repair is upregulated in people consuming vitamin C
supplements ... The results demonstrated that vitamin C may improve wound
healing by stimulating quiescent fibroblasts to divide and by promoting their
migration into the wounded area. Vitamin C could also protect the skin by
increasing the capacity of fibroblasts to repair potentially mutagenic DNA
lesions ... Free radicals are associated with
premature skin aging, and antioxidants, such as vitamin C, are known to
counter these highly damaging compounds. This new evidence suggest that, in
addition to ‘mopping up’ free radicals, vitamin C can help remove the DNA damage
they form, if they get past the cell’s defences"

old TRAMP males were fed 0.1% gamma-T-enriched mixed tocopherol diet that
contained 20-fold higher levels of gamma-tocopherol, and roughly 3-fold higher
levels of alpha-tocopherol ... Treatment with gamma-T-enriched mixed tocopherols
significantly suppressed the incidence of palpable tumor and Prostate
Intraepithelial Neoplasia (PIN) development without affecting the expression of
the transgene (SV-40) ... gamma-T-enriched mixed tocopherols significantly
up-regulated the expression of Nrf2 and its related detoxifying and antioxidant
enzymes thereby suppressing PIN and tumor development" - Note: One
previous study was done with alpha-tocopherol. I cannot understand why they did
that when the previous research also supported the gamma unless they didn't do

Prostate Cancer: Vitamin E, Selenium No Help - WebMD, 10/28/08 -

end of the story for large trials of vitamin E and selenium to prevent prostate
cancer" - Note: Most of the vitamin E studies I've read on prostate
cancer indicated that only the gamma-tocopherol worked yet they spent $114
million on this study and used the cheapest synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol
acetate form. How dumb was that? I don't know what the story on the selenium
was. Some say it's because people in the U.S. aren't deficient in selenium.
