Apple fibres may boost immune health: Study - Nutra USA, 3/3/10 -
"fed low-fat diets supplemented with either soluble
(pectin, 10 per cent of the diet) or insoluble fibre (cellulose, 5 or 10 per
cent of the diet) for six weeks. At the end of this period the mice were
challenged with an endotoxin to induce sickness ... Two hours after
[entotoxin] injection, the mice fed soluble fibre were only half as sick as
the other group, and they recovered 50 per cent sooner. And the differences
between the groups continued to be pronounced all the way out to 24 hours"

Pectin Power: Why Fruits And Vegetables May Protect Against Cancer's Spread
- Science Daily, 10/13/08 - "They have shown that a
fragment released from pectin, found in all fruits and vegetables, binds to
and is believed to inhibit galectin 3 (Gal3), a protein that plays a role in
all stages of cancer progression"

Pectin shows potential against prostate cancer - Nutra USA, 8/22/07 -
"The new study looked at the effect of different
forms of pectin - commercially available fractionated pectin powder (FPP),
citrus pectin (CP), and pH-modified CP (PectaSol) - on hormone- (androgen)
responsive and androgen-independent human prostate cancer cells ... the FPP
induced apoptosis (programmed cell death) by about 40 fold, compared to
non-treated cells, for both types of cancer cell" - [Abstract]
- Citrus Nutrient
Helps Slow Prostate Cancer - WebMD, 12/16/03 -
"Every day, patients took 18 capsules of pectin:
Each contained 14 grams of pectin, equaling 800 mg a day ... Fourteen months
later, 70% of the men had significant increases in the time it took to
produce PSA -- it took longer for prostate cells to produce a doubling of
blood PSA levels"

Pectin with Compact Conformation Effectively Alleviates Acute
Colitis in Mice - J Agric Food Chem 2022 Jan 26 -
"In this study, we compared the
alleviating effects of five orange pectins (200 mg/kg) extracted
using acid (P2), alkali (P10), cellulase (C), acid + cellulase
(P2 + C), and alkali + cellulase (P10 + C) on dextran sodium
sulfate-induced acute colitis. The physiological and
histopathological indicators revealed that the alleviating
effects were most significant for P10 + C, followed by P10, P2 +
C, P2, and C. P10 + C increased the diversity and relative
abundance of Akkermansia, leading to increased generation of
colonic short-chain fatty acids as well as mRNA and protein
expressions of GPR43, GPR109A, claudin-1, ZO-1, and occludin.
Therefore, proinflammatory cytokines were decreased, and
anti-inflammatory cytokines were increased. A compact
conformation of P10 + C contributed to the alleviation effects
on acute colitis. Alkali + cellulase-extracted orange pectin
with a compact conformation has potential as adjuvant treatment
for intestinal inflammation" - See

Pectins that Structurally
Differ in the Distribution of Methyl-esters Attenuate Citrobacter rodentium-Induced
Colitis - Mol Nutr Food Res 2021 Aug 9 - "Pectins
have anti-inflammatory properties on intestinal immunity through direct
interactions on Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in the small intestine or via
stimulating microbiota-dependent effects in the large intestine. Both the degree
of methyl-esterification (DM) and the distribution of methyl-esters (degree of
blockiness; DB) of pectins contribute to this influence on immunity but whether
and how the DB impacts immunity through microbiota-dependent effects in the
large intestine is unknown ... Pectins prevent C. rodentium-induced colonic
inflammation by lowering the C. rodentium load in the caecum independently of
the DB"

Facilitates the Synthesis and Activation of Adiponectin to Improve Hepatic Lipid
Oxidation - Mol Nutr Food Res 2021 Jul 15 -
"Adiponectin (ADPN), a kind of adipokines, plays an important role in the
regulation of lipid metabolism ... POS can act as an ADPN activator to improve
lipid metabolism, leading it to the applications of biomedical and functional
foods for ameliorating chronic liver diseases resulted from a high-energy diet"

Dietary
Pectin Regulates the Levels of Inflammatory Cytokines and Immunoglobulins in
Interleukin-10 Knockout Mice - J Agric Food Chem. 2010 Oct 14 -
"Pectin has protective, anti-inflammatory effects on
inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but the exact mechanism is unknown ... Pectin
treatment reduced expression of TNF-α and GATA-3, an important transcription
factor for the Th2 immune response. These mice also expressed lower levels of
IgE in the spleen and Peyer's patches (PP) and lower IgG and IgM expression in
PP. Interestingly, IL-10 deficiency resulted in lower CD4(+) and CD8(+)
populations in the spleen, mesenteric lymph node (MLN), and PP; however, pectin
counteracted these declines in the MLN and PP. Therefore, dietary pectin
downregulates the inflammatory response in the colon by moderating the
production of proinflammatory cytokines and immunoglobulins"

Sickness behavior
induced by endotoxin can be mitigated by the dietary soluble fiber, pectin,
through up-regulation of IL-4 and Th2 polarization - Brain Behav Immun.
2010 Feb 6 -
"We show that a diet rich in soluble fiber protects
mice from endotoxin-induced sickness behavior by polarizing mice Th2 when
compared to a diet containing only insoluble fiber. Mice fed soluble fiber
became less sick and recovered faster from endotoxin-induced sickness
behaviors than mice fed insoluble fiber ... These data show that a diet rich
in soluble fiber protects against endotoxin-induced sickness behavior by
polarizing mice Th2 and promoting alternative activation of macrophages"
