Nighttime Smartphone
Use a Bad Call for Male Fertility? - Medscape, 9/9/20 -
"For the current study, the researchers analyzed
semen samples from 116 men (mean age, 35.2 years) who were undergoing
fertility evaluation. The men also provided information on exposure to the
screens of electronic devices and sleep habits via a questionnaire ...
smartphone and tablet use in the evening and after bedtime was negatively
correlated (P < .05) with sperm motility, progressive motility, and
concentration and was positively correlated with the percentage of immotile
sperm ... The study also showed a significant positive correlation between
sleep duration and sperm total and progressive motility and a significant
negative correlation between subjective sleepiness and total and progressive
motility, as well as total motile sperm number ... we suggest men not to use
these digital media devices 2 hours before sleep time"

California Releases Cell Phone Radiation Guidelines - WebMD, 12/19/17 -
"When you sleep, you keep the cellphone at least
arm's length away from your body. And also, not carrying your cellphone in
your pocket, having it either in your purse or not carrying it with you ...
The new guidelines also advise: reducing cellphone use when the signal is
weak; less use of cellphones to stream audio or video, or to download or
upload large files; keeping cellphones away from the bed at night; taking
off headsets when not on a call"

Cell
phones negatively affect male fertility, new study suggests - Science
Daily, 6/9/14 - "In control groups, 50-85% of sperm
have normal movement. The researchers found this proportion fell by an
average of 8 percentage points when there was exposure to mobile phones.
Similar effects were seen for sperm viability. The effects on sperm
concentration were less clear"
-
Hands-free talking and texting are unsafe for drivers, study shows -
Science Daily, 6/12/13 - "There is a looming public
safety crisis ahead with the future proliferation of these in-vehicle
technologies," said AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet. "It's time to
consider limiting new and potentially dangerous mental distractions built
into cars, particularly with the common public misperception that hands-free
means risk-free."
-
Using hansfree kit or sending texts behind the wheel is as dangerous as
being twice over legal alcohol limit, study suggests - Science Daily,
3/13/13 - "When the conversation using the handsfree
was simple, the effects were comparable to a BAC level of 0.04 g/l, which is
below the legal limit of 0.5 g/l in countries like Spain and Australia.
However, when more attention was required, their alcohol level analogue shot
up to 0.7 g/l, which is above the legal limit in both countries yet below in
other countries, like the USA or the UK where up to 0.8 g/l is allowed. When
answering text messages, the rate stood at 1 g/l, which is illegal in any of
all of these countries"
-
Cell
phone use in pregnancy may cause behavioral disorders in offspring -
Science Daily, 3/15/12 - "This is the first
experimental evidence that fetal exposure to radiofrequency radiation from
cellular telephones does in fact affect adult behavior ... They found that
the mice that were exposed to radiation tended to be more hyperactive and
had reduced memory capacity. Taylor attributed the behavioral changes to an
effect during pregnancy on the development of neurons in the prefrontal
cortex region of the brain"
-
Wifi-enabled laptops may be nuking sperm - MSNBC, 11/28/11 -
"placed a few drops under a laptop connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi and
then hit download ... Four hours later, the semen was, eh, well-done ... A
quarter of the sperm were no longer swimming around, for instance, compared
to just 14 percent from semen samples stored at the same temperature away
from the computer ... nine percent of the sperm showed DNA damage,
three-fold more than the comparison samples"

Impact
of cell phone use on men's semen parameters - Andrologia. 2011
Oct;43(5):312-6 - "Serum free testosterone (T),
follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH) and prolactin
(PRL) were collected from all patients ... Patients with cell phone usage
showed significantly higher T and lower LH levels than those who did not use
cell phone. No significant difference between the two groups was observed
regarding FSH and PRL values. Our results showed that cell phone use
negatively affects sperm quality in men"

Frying Your Brain - The Daily, 6/1/11 - "Experts
are especially concerned that cellphone radiation contributes to glioma, a
rare and deadly form of brain cancer ... those who's spent 30 minutes on a
cellphone every day for 10 years - had a 40 percent increased risk of
developing glioma"
-
Cell
phone use may reduce male fertility, Austrian-Canadian study suggests -
Science Daily, 5/19/11 - "Researchers in Austria and
Canada have found that while cell phone use appears to increase the level of
testosterone circulating in the body, it may also lead to low sperm quality
and a decrease in fertility ... EMW may increase the number of cells in the
testes that produce testosterone; however, by lowering the levels of LH
excreted by the pituitary gland, EMW may also block the conversion of this
basic circulating type of testosterone to the more active, potent form of
testosterone associated with sperm production and fertility"
-
Cell
phone use may have effect on brain activity, but health consequences unknown
- Science Daily, 2/22/11 - "Metabolism in the brain
region closest to the antenna (orbitofrontal cortex and temporal pole) was
significantly higher (approximately 7 percent) for cell phone on than for
cell phone off conditions. "The increases were significantly correlated with
the estimated electromagnetic field amplitudes both for absolute metabolism
and normalized metabolism," the authors write. "This indicates that the
regions expected to have the greater absorption of RF-EMFs from the cell
phone exposure were the ones that showed the larger increases in glucose
metabolism"
-
Mobile phone use not related to increased brain cancer risk, UK study
suggests - Science Daily, 2/17/11 - "Our
findings indicate that a causal link between mobile phone use and cancer is
unlikely because there is no evidence of any significant increase in the
disease since their introduction and rapid proliferation"
-
Does
long-term cell phone use lead to brain tumors? - Science Daily, 1/19/11
- "Based on an analysis of pooled data from
different studies, researchers write, "[L]ong-term cell phone usage can
approximately double the risk of developing a glioma or acoustic neuroma in
the more exposed brain hemisphere" -- that is, on the side where the user
typically holds the phone to the ear. That conclusion is consistent even
with data on the long-term cell phone users from the Interphone studies"

-
Cell Phone Use Linked to Male Infertility - WebMD, 9/19/08 -
"researchers collected semen samples from 32 men and
divided each man's sample into two parts. They placed half of the semen
samples 2.5 centimeters away from a 850 MHz frequency cell phone in talk
mode for one hour. Most cell phones used in the U.S. are 850-900 MHz. They
chose this distance because it is the typical distance between the testes
and the trouser pockets ... Semen exposed to radiofrequency electromagnetic
waves emitted from cell phones had higher levels of damaging free radicals,
lower sperm motility (the ability of the sperm to move and swim) and sperm
viability (the percentage of live sperm), and possibly greater oxidative
stress"

Cell Phones May Cause Hearing Loss - WebMD, 9/19/07 -
"One- to two-year users had a 16.48 decibel loss in
the high-frequency range, he says, while those who used the phones more than
four years had a 24.54 decibel loss ... That decrease in hearing over a
relatively brief period may not be noticeable to mobile phone users but
would be of concern to a hearing expert"

Study: Power Lines May Aid Cancer Cells - Intelihealth, 10/29/01 -
"electromagnetic fields disrupted the functioning of
the hormone melatonin in individual cells ... Scientists have accepted since
1987 that the substance suppresses the multiplication of cancer cells ...
They exposed two batches of the [breast cancer] cell to two different levels
of electromagnetic field ... In both cases, the ability of melatonin to
suppress the growth of the cancer cells was found to have declined. In some
cells with smaller concentrations of melatonin, the suppressive effect was
entirely absent"
