Recent Longevity News for the seven days ending 6/11/08.  You should consult your doctor if you are taking any medications.

Statins Are "Remarkably Safe," Says New Review - Medscape, 6/10/08 - "A new review of the safety of statins has concluded that these drugs are well tolerated, with their main adverse effects — myopathy and rhabdomyolysis — occurring very rarely at standard doses" - I take some hits for putting out information on statins.  I just put out the information and let the readers decide.  Personally, I don't have a problem with them but with that new study on red yeast rice (see below) it might be a better option.  Also see Sytrinol.

Pioglitazone Reduces Conversion From Impaired Glucose Tolerance to Diabetes - Medscape, 6/8/08 - "There was a weight gain of 3.9 kg in the pioglitazone group vs about 0.8 kg in the placebo group ... Over a mean follow-up of 2.6 years, pioglitazone markedly decreased, by 81%, the conversion rate of IGT to type 2 diabetes. IGT individuals who had the worst level of beta cell function and who were the most insulin resistant were the individuals who were most likely to develop type 2 diabetes, whether they were in the pioglitazone group...or the placebo group. Pioglitazone was quite safe and quite efficacious" -  See my note below on the new book Freedom from Disease: The Breakthrough Approach to Preventing Cancer, Heart Disease, Alzheimer's, and Depression by Controlling Insulin.  I haven't read it but it sounds like he is right on.  I started taking rosiglitazone several years ago when a study on it showed a 60% reduction in diabetes risk.  Then when the worry about it causing heart disease came out I figured pioglitazone was the same class of drug so should give similar results and switch to that.  This study tends to show I was right on that one.  3.9 kg is 8.6 lbs though but I haven't experienced the weight gain but I exercise for over an hour per day.  See pioglitazone at OffshoreRx1.com.

  • Drug 'Avandia' May Prevent Diabetes - WebMD, 9/15/06 - "People at high risk for diabetes who took the drug Avandia reduced their risk of developing the disease by 60% in the three-year trial ... taking the drug metformin (Glucophage), which is already widely used for diabetes prevention, was associated with a 31% reduction in disease risk -- about half that seen in the Avandia study"

Belly Fat May Affect Liver Function - Science Daily, 6/10/08 - "It has been shown that people who store body fat in their abdomens are at greater risk to develop diabetes and other chronic illnesses, but why this happens has remained unclear ... Our study found lipid release from abdominal fat was substantially elevated during the night, which may be a primary mechanism leading to insulin resistance, a strong risk factor for type 2 diabetes"

Treatment Can Make Cancer Stronger - WebMD, 6/10/08 - "About half of patients are cured -- that is, all of their tumor cells die ... The other half of the time, some tumor cells survive treatment. These cancer cells are more aggressive than they were before treatment"

Why the obese and smokers risk deafness - New Scientist, 6/10/08 - "stop smoking, stay slim, and have an alcoholic drink at least once a week ... a 60-year-old man who has smoked a pack a day for at least 10 years loses about five decibels on top of the 25 dB loss experienced by a third of the people his age"

Low Vitamin D Ups Heart Risk in Men - WebMD, 6/9/08 - "men who had vitamin D levels of 15 ng/mL or less in their blood samples -- an indication of vitamin D deficiency -- had an increased risk for heart attack compared to those whose vitamin D level was considered sufficient (30 ng/mL). The twofold increased risk remained significant even when adjusting for other factors known to contribute to heart disease, such as high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease" - See vitamin D at Amazon.com.

Eating Fish And Foods With Omega-3 Fatty Acids Linked To Lower Risk Of Age-related Eye Disease - Science Daily, 6/9/08 - "When results from all nine studies were combined, a high dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids was associated with a 38 percent reduction in the risk of late (more advanced) AMD, while eating fish twice a week was associated with a reduced risk of both early and late AMD ... "Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid in particular, form an integral part of the neural retina," the layer of nerve cells in the retina" - [WebMD] - See Mega Twin EPA at Amazon.com or Jarrow Max DHA at Amazon.com.

Chinese Red Yeast Rice Is Good For Your Heart, Study Suggests - Science Daily, 6/9/08 - "a partially purified extract of Chinese red yeast rice, Xuezhikang (XZK), reduced the risk of repeat heart attacks by 45%, revascularization (bypass surgery/angioplasty), cardiovascular mortality and total mortality by one-third and cancer mortality by two-thirds" - See red yeast rice at Amazon.com.

Elevated Liver Enzymes Linked to Development of Diabetes - Medscape, 6/9/08 - "Compared with individuals in the lowest quintile of GGT, the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for incident diabetes were 1.13 for quintile 2, 1.67 for quintile 3, 2.77 for quintile 4, and 2.67 for quintile 5 (p for linear trend < 0.001). For ALT, the corresponding HRs were 0.93, 1.28, 1.35, and 1.93, respectively"

Extra Sleep Improves Athletic Performance - Science Daily, 6/9/08 - "Getting extra sleep over an extended period of time improves athletic performance, mood and alertness ... The athletes then extended their sleep to 10 hours per day for six to seven weeks ... After obtaining extra sleep, athletes swam a 15-meter meter sprint 0.51 seconds faster, reacted 0.15 seconds quicker off the blocks, improved turn time by 0.10 seconds and increased kick strokes by 5.0 kicks"

Hemoglobin A1C Levels Strongly Linked to Subsequent Mortality in Diabetes - Medscape, 6/9/08 - "For participants without a previous diagnosis of diabetes, HRs for all-cause mortality steadily increased from the A1C reference category to the highest category (≥ 7.0%; HR, 2.36; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.72 - 3.25). In addition, A1C was associated with mortality from circulatory, endocrine, nutritional, metabolic, and immune diseases as well as from other and unknown causes"

Gum Disease May Make Diabetes Worse - WebMD, 6/6/08 - "The suggestion from the study is that treating gum disease could actually slow down the progression to diabetes in those at high risk of developing the disease"

Bad Bacteria Lurk in Rest Stops - WebMD, 6/6/08 - "Their results showed the presence of many different bacteria, such as staph bacteria and E. coli. MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus), a difficult to treat type of staph that can cause potentially life-threatening infection, was found in 10 of the 47 samples taken ... carefully and diligently wash their hands and use a towel or other type of device to cover their hands when exiting the restrooms" -  People might think I'm a germaphobe but I've always used a paper towel to exit public restrooms.

Sun Exposure And Vitamin D Levels May Play Strong Role In Risk Of Type 1 Diabetes In Children - Science Daily, 6/5/08 - "This research suggests that childhood type 1 diabetes may be preventable with a modest intake of vitamin D3 (1000 IU/day) for children, ideally with 5 to 10 minutes of sunlight around noontime, when good weather allows"

Pomegranate extract shows joint health potential - Nutra USA, 6/5/08 - "The severity of arthritis was significantly decreased in the animals receiving POMx, with a reduction of 69.2 and 76 per cent in the groups consuming 13.6 and 34 mg per kg of POMx" - [Abstract] - See pomegranate at Amazon.com.

I caught the tail end interview with the author of a new book out titled Freedom from Disease: The Breakthrough Approach to Preventing Cancer, Heart Disease, Alzheimer's, and Depression by Controlling Insulin.  It sounds like the long version of what I've been putting out.  See my Insulin and Aging page.  For a summary, see:

  • Insulin and Aging - Brown University - "Keep insulin levels low and cells are stronger, staving off infection and age-related diseases such as cancer, dementia and stroke"

I had the lag in gas prices wrong.  On 6/6 at 1130 pacific time, CNBC said the lag was six weeks.  So it will take six weeks for today's $139/barrel to show up at the pumps (around July 18th).

On 6/7, the CBS evening news said that the break even on the extra $3400 for a Toyota Hybrid Prius was 2.6 years down from something like 5 years.  It sounds like a no brainer to me.  Plus it will probably go to less than 2 years if oil goes to $200 per barrel like they are saying and lag catches up.  In California with the $4000 rebate from the feds and $3000 rebate from the state, you are already at break even for the natural gas powered Honda Civic GX.  That brings the cost to around $18,000 which is what the regular Civics go for with the same options.  The $2000 per year savings on fuel would pay off the Phill garage refueler in two years.

I don't know who is right on lag.  The 6/7 CBS news also said that the gas at the pump today was refined from oil purchased at $90 per barrel (the current price is $138.54 per barrel).  It may have been an old clip but they didn't indicate that.  From the graph at http://www.wtrg.com/daily/clfclose.gif, the last time it was at $90 per barrel was about four months ago.  If you download the data at http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/xls/pet_pri_spt_s1_d.xls, the last $90 per barrel was 2/7, exactly four months.  Maybe my original guestimate of 2 to 3 months was accurate.

Figuring a best case 6 week lag I come up with an average price per gallon of $4.97 per gallon in San Diego if the price of oil hovers where it's at.  Calculations:  From http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/xls/pet_pri_spt_s1_d.xls, the price of oil on 4/28 (six weeks ago) was $118.78.  The current price is $138.54.  From http://www.sandiegogasprices.com/, the current average in San Diego is $4.436 per gallon.  $138.54 - $118.78 = $19.76 increase.  $19.76/$118.78 = 16.6%.  If 73% of the price of gas is the price of oil, then that would be 73% of 16.6% or 12.144% increase in the price of gas.  1.12144 * $4.436 = $4.97 per gallon if oil prices hover at the current price and assuming a 6 week lag which is probably way too conservative.  Using the $90 per barrel CBS number I come up with $6.18 per gallon.  I think it will probably be somewhere in between.

Abstracts from this week's Doctor's Guide Nutrition/Dietetics plus abstracts from my RSS feeds (Click here for the journals, the PubMed ones at the top):

A double-blind dose-finding pilot study of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for major depressive disorder - Eur Neuropsychopharmacol. 2008 Jun 5 - "Group A (n=14): 1 g/day of oral DHA; Group B (n=11): 2 g/day; and Group C (n=10): 4 g/day. We measured HAM-D-17 scores, plasma DHA, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and n-6/n-3 ratio. Completer response rates (>/=50% decrease in HAM-D-17 score) were 83% for Group A, 40% for Group B, and 0% for Group C; Groups A and B had significant decreases in HAM-D-17 scores" - See Jarrow Max DHA at Amazon.com.

Bovine colostrum as a biologic in clinical medicine: A review â Part II: Clinical studies - Int J Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2008 May;46(5):211-25 - "The value of bovine colostrum as a biologic in medicine is documented in clinical trials and supported by relatively large databases containing case reports and anecdotal findings. The main actions include an antibacterial effect and modulation of the immune response. The ability of bovine colostrum concentrates (BCC are polyvalent bovine colostrum concentrates produced from the colostrums of several 100 cows) to neutralize lipopolysaccharides, i.e. endotoxins arising from Gram-negative bacterial pathogens and to inhibit enterogenic endotoxemia in animal models as shown in the last review to have its counterpart in patient therapy"

Does Folic Acid Supplementation Prevent or Promote Colorectal Cancer? Results from Model-Based Predictions - Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2008 Jun 6 - "Changes in colorectal cancer risk in response to folic acid supplementation are likely a complex function of treatment start, duration, and effect on cell proliferation and mutations rates. Predicted colorectal cancer incidence rates under supplementation are mostly higher than rates without folic acid supplementation unless supplementation is initiated early in life (before age 20 years). To the extent to which this model predicts reality, it indicates that the effect on cancer risk when starting folic acid supplementation late in life is small, yet mostly detrimental"

Consumption of hydrolyzable tannins-rich pomegranate extract suppresses inflammation and joint damage in rheumatoid arthritis - Nutrition. 2008 May 17 - "collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) ... Consumption of POMx potently delayed the onset and reduced the incidence of CIA in mice. Severity of arthritis was also significantly lower in POMx-fed animals. Histopathology of the arthritic joints from POMx-fed mice demonstrated reduced joint infiltration by the inflammatory cells, and the destruction of bone and cartilage were alleviated. Levels of IL-6 were significantly decreased in the joints of POMx-fed mice with CIA. In mouse macrophages, POMx abrogated multiple signal transduction pathways and downstream mediators implicated in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis" - [Nutra USA] - See pomegranate at Amazon.com.

Resveratrol Induces Apoptosis through ROS-Dependent Mitochondria Pathway in HT-29 Human Colorectal Carcinoma Cells - J Agric Food Chem. 2008 Jun 4 - "Results of the present study provide evidence demonstrating the antitumor effect of trans-resveratrol via a ROS-dependent apoptosis pathway in colorectal carcinoma" - See resveratrol products at Amazon.com.

Legume and isoflavone intake and prostate cancer risk: The Multiethnic Cohort Study - Int J Cancer. 2008 Jun 2 - "legume intake is associated with a moderate reduction in prostate cancer risk and that the isoflavones in soy products are probably not responsible for this effect"

Simvastatin induces apoptosis in human colon cancer cells and in tumor xenografts, and attenuates colitis-associated colon cancer in mice - Int J Cancer. 2008 Jun 2 - "colitis-associated colon cancer (CAC) ... simvastatin could be a potential chemopreventive and therapeutic agent of CAC as well as de novo colon cancer"

Effects of aqueous green tea extract on activities of DNA turn-over enzymes in cancerous and non-cancerous human gastric and colon tissues - Altern Ther Health Med. 2008 May-Jun;14(3):30-3 - "Our data suggest that green tea may support the medical treatment of stomach and colon cancer" - See green tea extract at Amazon.com.

Editorial:

One 4/23 I mentioned the Cynthia Sommer’s case in San Diego who was set free after two years in jail when they discovered that her husband wasn't poisoned after all.  On Sunday's Dateline there were more cases that were even more disturbing.  Yeah, the show was biased and I'm not one for fall for the bias but I don't see how anyone could ignore the facts.  It was about a detective in Buffalo that freed three people in a row for being wrongly convicted of murder.  All three were ultimately freed because of DNA, which is pretty hard to argue with plus the DNA matched others that were just as likely to have done it.  The DA hated the detective's guts and even removed him from the third case.  The DA came up with a really far fetched theory of how the third DNA could have gotten there.  The detective wouldn't shut up and went to the media and got suspended without pay for doing so.  That lady in that third case was found not guilty also and the DA ended up resigning he said for health reasons.

We need to reform our justice system somehow.  To many guilty people are being freed and too many innocent people are being convicted.  It's easy to ignore if your not the one wrongfully sitting in jail.  I'd like to think that I've started a chain reaction grass roots campaign to get people to do something but I know it will never happen.  I feel we need jurors who are intelligent enough to see when they are getting a snow job and with some experience.  The only way I see to do that if for professional jurors.  People will argue that that's not fair justice because the verdict is decided by the government and not decided peers.  Yeah, but what we have now is even worse.  The main problem I see with professional jurors is that if you have a few that are making really poor decisions and you try to fire them the ACLU will be all over the government's butt for trying to fix the outcome.  I can see that point but we still need to change the bottom line that too many people get the wrong verdict.  If they have a better solution than they can have their say and let the people vote on it.  If people are worried that the government is influencing decisions maybe they could have a clause that allows everyone to vote on it every six years or so on whether they want to go back to the old system.  I hope I'm not sounding like a commie but putting the wrong people in jail and releasing the wrong people is not what was intended by a democracy.

I've got a lot of respect for that Buffalo detective that held his ground despite nearly being fired in a time when people are just barely making it as it is.
