Early Peanut Feeding
Guidelines Still Not Reaching Families - Medscape, 11/7/21 -
"Diseases (NIAID) updated its feeding guidelines in
2017, urging parents to introduce these foods to babies around 4-6 months of age
rather than wait until 1-3 years of age, as previously recommended. The American
Academy of Pediatrics approved those guidelines too, and in 2019 changed its own
feeding recommendations"

Maternal Intake of Cow's
Milk during Lactation Is Associated with Lower Prevalence of Food Allergy in
Offspring - Nutrients 2020 Nov 28 - "An increased
maternal intake of cow's milk during lactation, confirmed with biomarkers (fatty
acids C15:0 and C17:0) in the maternal blood and breast milk, was associated
with a lower prevalence of physician-diagnosed food allergy by 12 months of age.
Intake of fruit and berries during lactation was associated with a higher
prevalence of atopic eczema at 12 months of age"

Bed
dust microorganisms may boost children's health, study suggests - Science
Daily, 11/19/20 - "The correlation suggests that
microorganisms may reduce a child's risk of developing asthma, allergies and
autoimmune diseases later on in life. Invisible to the human eye, our beds are
teeming with microbial life. It is life that, especially during early childhood,
can affect how microorganisms in our bodies develop, and thereby how resilient
we become to various diseases."

gasseri KS-13, Bifidobacterium bifidum G9-1, and Bifidobacterium longum MM-2)
improve rhinoconjunctivitis-specific quality of life in individuals with
seasonal allergies: a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial -
Am J Clin Nutr. 2017 Feb 22 - "The probiotic group
reported an improvement in the MRQLQ global score from baseline to pollen peak
(-0.68 ± 0.13) when compared with the placebo group (-0.19" - See

Vitamin
D provides relief for those with chronic hives, study shows - Science Daily,
2/17/14 - "Over 12 weeks, 38 study participants daily
took a triple-drug combination of allergy medications (one prescription and two
over-the-counter drugs) and one vitamin D3, an over-the-counter supplement. Half
of the patient's took 600 IUs of vitamin D3 and the other half took 4000 IUs ...
after just one week, the severity of patients' symptoms decreased by 33 percent
for both groups. But at the end of three months, the group taking 4000 IUs of
vitamin D3 had a further 40 percent decrease in severity of their hives. The low
vitamin D3 treatment group had no further improvement after the first week"

Dietary
fibers protect against asthma, study suggests - Science Daily, 1/6/14 -
"A team of researchers led by Benjamin Marsland from
Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) has shown in experiments with mice that the
lack of fermentable fibers in people's diet paves the way for allergic
inflammatory reactions in the lungs ... His team either put mice on a standard
diet with four percent fermentable fibers or gave them low-fiber food with
merely 0.3 percent fermentable fibers. This low-fiber food is largely comparable
to the Western diet, which contains no more than 0.6 percent fibers on average
... When the researchers exposed the mice to an extract of house dust mites, the
mice with the low-fiber food developed a stronger allergic reaction with much
more mucus in the lungs than the mice with the standard diet. Conversely, a
comparison between mice on a standard diet and mice who received food enriched
with fermentable fibers likewise showed that these dietary fibers have a
protective influence" - See

Long-chain PUFA reduce allergy-related mediator release by human mast cells
in vitro via inhibition of reactive oxygen species - Br J Nutr. 2012 Oct
1:1-11 - "Increased n-6 and reduced n-3 long-chain
PUFA (LC-PUFA) intake in Western diets may contribute to the increased
prevalence of allergic diseases ... This suggests that dietary
supplementation with EPA and/or DHA may alter the MC phenotype, contributing
to a reduced susceptibility to develop and sustain allergic disease"

disease"

Low
vitamin D levels linked to allergies in kids - Science Daily, 2/24/11 -
"When the resulting data was analyzed by Einstein
researchers, no association between vitamin D levels and allergies was
observed in adults. But for children and adolescents, low vitamin D levels
correlated with sensitivity to 11 of the 17 allergens tested, including both
environmental allergens (e.g., ragweed, oak, dog, cockroach) and food
allergens (e.g., peanuts). For example, children who had vitamin D
deficiency (defined as less than 15 nanograms of vitamin D per milliliter of
blood), were 2.4 times as likely to have a peanut allergy than were children
with sufficient levels of vitamin D (more than 30 nanograms of vitamin D per
milliliter of blood)" - See

Early Antibiotic Use Linked to Asthma and Allergy at Age 6 Years -
Medscape, 1/11/11 - "Children with early antibiotic
exposure had an increased risk for asthma, with an adjusted odds ratio (OR)
of 1.52 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07 - 2.16). In children in whom
asthma was first diagnosed after age 3 years, the adjusted OR was 1.66 (95%
CI, 0.99 - 2.79). In children who had no history of lower respiratory tract
infection before age 1 year, the adjusted OR was 1.66 ... Children with no
family history of asthma had an even stronger association of early
antibiotic use with subsequent development of asthma (adjusted OR, 1.89; 95%
CI, 1.00 - 3.58; P for interaction = .03). Adjusted OR for a positive blood
or skin test result for allergy was 1.59"

Omega Fatty Acid Balance Can Alter Immunity And Gene Expression -
Science Daily, 5/29/09 - "Anthropological evidence
suggests that human ancestors maintained a 2:1 w6/w3 ratio for much of
history, but in Western countries today the ratio has spiked to as high as
10:1. Since these omega fatty acids can be converted into inflammatory
molecules, this dietary change is believed to also disrupt the proper
balance of pro- and anti- inflammatory agents, resulting in increased
systemic inflammation and a higher incidence of problems including asthma,
allergies, diabetes, and arthritis ... many key signaling genes that promote
inflammation were markedly reduced compared to a normal diet, including a
signaling gene for a protein called PI3K, a critical early step in
autoimmune and allergic inflammation responses"

Folic Acid May Help Treat Allergies, Asthma - Science Daily, 4/30/09 -
"People with higher blood levels of folate had fewer
IgE antibodies, fewer reported allergies, less wheezing and lower likelihood
of asthma ... People with the lowest folate levels (below 8 nanograms per
milliliter) had 40 percent higher risk of wheezing than people with the
highest folate levels (above 18 ng/ml) ... People with the lowest folate
levels had a 30 percent higher risk than those with the highest folate
levels of having elevated IgE antibodies, markers of allergy predisposition
... Those with the lowest folate levels had 31 percent higher risk of atopy
(allergic symptoms) than people with the highest folate levels ... Those
with lowest folate levels had 16 percent higher risk of having asthma than
people with the highest folate levels" - See

Curcumin Suppresses IgE-Mediated Allergic Response and Mast Cell Activation
- Medscape, 6/3/08 - "Two cytokines, TNF-alpha and
IL-4, are among those that are critical to allergic inflammation. In studies
using the RBL-2H3 tumor mast cell line, the researchers found that curcumin
significantly inhibited the antigen-stimulated expression of mRNA for both
cytokines, and the secretion of both cytokines in the mast cells, in a
dose-dependent manner" - See

Hayfever Hope: Probiotic Drink Can Modify Immune System's Response To Grass

immune response" - See

-
Probiotics may offer hay fever hope - Nutra USA, 6/3/08 -
"Hayfever is an allergic reaction to pollen or
fungal spores, most commonly grass pollen. The immune system mistakes the
spores for harmful invaders and white blood cells - T-helper type 2 (Th2)
lymphocytes - produce protein-like cytokines, such as interleukin-4 (IL-4),
IL-5 and IL-6, which in turn promote the synthesis of the immune chemicals
immunoglobulins (Ig) to bind to the pollen and fight them off ... However,
supplementation with the probiotic led to reduced production of IL-5 and
IL-6, as well as decreased in the production of IgE ... The
probiotic-supplemented volunteers had significantly reduced levels of IL-5
and IL-6" - [Abstract]

IL-5, IL-6 and IFN-gamma production compared with volunteers supplemented
with placebo. Meanwhile, levels of specific IgG increased and IgE decreased
in the probiotic group" - See

Are Vacuum Cleaners Bad for Your Health? - WebMD, 1/6/12 -
"Certain vacuum cleaners spit fine dust and bacteria
back into the air, where they can spread infections and trigger allergies
... Vacuums with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters released
only slightly lower levels of dust and bacteria than vacuums that did not
use these special filters. HEPA filters are supposed to remove 99.9% of the
pollen, animal dander, and even bacteria from the air ... For a vacuum to do
more harm than good, it has to be a really old vacuum cleaner that has never
been cleaned ... His advice? Get a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter,
