Recent Longevity News for the seven days ending 2/26/03:

Search for Youth 'Pill' Continues - HealthScout News, 2/26/03 - "One idea is based on the fact that dwarf mice lack growth hormone and live 50 percent longer than normal-stature mice ... The second possibility would be to prevent the liver from secreting as much IGF-1 ... For another thing, Barzilai found slightly elevated IGF levels in a group of 250 centenarians he is studying"

Testosterone: The Fountain of Youth? - WebMD, 2/26/03 - "Slater says a good trial to determine if testosterone therapy increases the risk of prostate cancer would need a minimum of 6,000 men and would cost in excess of $100 million" - Kind of a worthless article written by the anti-anti-aging people that doesn't say much.  I don't know why I included it.  I feel something that they don't understand is that the objective for most people is quality of life, not who dies with the biggest number of years under their belt and most of those people don't have 30 years to wait for studies to be completed.

Researchers Discourage Human Growth Hormone as Anti-Aging Treatment - WebMD, 2/26/03 - "Last November, one of the largest studies published suggested that injected HGH did build muscle and bone mass and help healthy seniors lose weight. However, 40% of the 131 men and women studied developed serious side effects -- including arthritis-like joint pain and swelling, carpal tunnel syndrome, and diabetes-like changes in blood glucose levels ... is especially concerned about the use of amino acid pills, which are sold on various anti-aging web sites and through magazines ... Besides increasing risk of liver damage, these products could interfere with other medications, such as the blood-thinner Coumadin ... "We have yet to see serious sustained side effects in anti-aging patients treated under the recommended protocols taught at our conferences," says Klatz" - I've been taking hGH for about five years and haven't seen any of those side effects, however, I agree with the anti-anti-aging people on the amino acids. - Ben

Breakfast Cereal and Heart Disease - WebMD, 2/26/03 - "the more whole-grain cereal the men ate, the lower their risk of death from heart disease or any other cause was. For example, men who ate at least one serving of whole-grain breakfast cereal per day had a 27% lower risk of death from any cause compared with those who rarely ate whole-grain cereal ... men who ate the most whole-grain cereals also had a 28% lower risk of death due to heart disease and a 23% lower risk of heart attack than men who ate the least whole-grain cereal ... whole grains are thought to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure and improve how the body processes insulin and glucose. Compared with their highly processed and refined counterparts, whole-grain cereals also contain more beneficial micronutrients, antioxidants, minerals, and fiber"

Belly full of danger - USA Today, 2/25/03 - "people with wide girths are more likely to have large amounts of deep-hidden belly fat around their organs. It might be the most dangerous kind of fat and could increase a person's risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer ... visceral or intra-abdominal fat, is linked to high cholesterol, high insulin, high triglycerides, high blood pressure and other problems ... So far, physical activity and weight loss appear to be the key ... It's very likely that genes, sex hormones and stress hormones (cortisol) play a role"

Heart Group Releases [American Heart Association] Guidelines on Omega-3 Fatty Acid Intake - Medscape, 2/25/03 - "Patients with CHD should eat about 1 g of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) per day ... Patients with hypertriglyceridemia may benefit from 2 to 4 g of EPA plus DHA per day in capsule form" - Note that it's the EPA and DHA that count, not the amount of oil in the capsule.  See TwinLab Mega Twin EPA at iHerb (5% discount code "qc") or Vitacosticon.

Something Fishy With Seafood? - CBS News, 2/25/03 - "Studies show that mercury found in some fishes can be unhealthy and dangerous for pregnant women. But experts say little has been done to warn those at risk ... mercury in the body can result in impaired coordination, blurred vision, tremors, irritability, memory loss and behavioral or intellectual problems"

Tumour Necrosis Factor Linked To Insulin Resistance - Doctor's Guide, 2/25/03 - "Increased concentrations of circulating tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) are associated with peripheral insulin resistance and raised levels of glucose and insulin in patients prior to type 2 diabetes onset"

The Ethnic-Metabolic Divide - CBS News, 2/24/03 - "Affected people have at least three of the following symptoms: a waist measuring more than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women; levels of triglycerides — fats in the blood — of at least 150 milligrams per deciliter; levels of high-density cholesterol — the "good cholesterol" — of less than 40 mgs in men and less than 50 mgs in women; blood pressure of at least 135 over 80; and blood sugar of at least 110 mgs per deciliter"

HDL Cholesterol Level Linked To Longevity, Cognitive Function - Clinical Psychiatry News, 2/03 - "A group of centenarians maintained significantly higher than normal HDL cholesterol levels, and within the group the parameter was strongly correlated with cognitive function ... The centenarians' offspring were also significantly healthier than their spouses: They were half as likely to have diabetes or heart attacks and had significantly lower blood pressure. No strokes occurred among the offspring ... The presence of HDL might explain the health and longevity in these families. The serum concentration of HDL typically declines with age by a mean of 5 mg/dL every 8 years ... Had the decline followed the normal pattern, the centenarians' HDL would have been about 20 mg/dL. But the actual mean value in the group was 55 mg/dL" - See my HDL page for ways to raise it.

The Metabolic Syndrome: Prevalence and Associated Risk Factor Findings in the US Population From the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-1994 - Archives of Internal Medicine, 2/24/03 - "The metabolic syndrome was present in 4.6%, 22.4%, and 59.6% of normal-weight, overweight, and obese men, respectively, and a similar distribution was observed in women"

What to Do About the Metabolic Syndrome? - Archives of Internal Medicine, 2/24/03 - "Substantial data are accumulating to suggest that lifestyle modification aimed at producing weight loss is an effective treatment for overweight or obese individuals with the metabolic syndrome ... Some physicians prescribe metformin because it can be associated with weight reduction and seems to counteract insulin resistance. However, metformin is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a weight loss drug ... Some might consider the use of weight loss drugs in patients with metabolic syndrome" - I noticed that #1 Drugstore has generic metformin, 100 tabs of the 850 mg, for $42 delivered compared with $85.36 for Drugstore.comicon.  For 200 of the generic 500 mg metformin, International Anti-aging Systems is $65 with shipping compared to $58 with shipping for #1 Drugstore.  Don't take prescription drugs unless under the guidance of a physician.

High Blood Pressure Drug for Heart Failure - WebMD, 2/24/03 - "high-risk patients treated with a widely prescribed ACE inhibitor [Altace] were 23% less likely to develop heart failure than patients who were not treated ... ACE inhibitors work by widening the blood vessels to help improve blood flow. They also help block a blood vessel-constricting chemical called angiotensin, which is produced in people with heart disease and may cause worsening of the disease"

Rofecoxib Appears to Have Earlier Onset of Osteoarthritis Pain Relief - Doctor's Guide, 2/24/03 - "Rofecoxib 25 mg achieved a faster onset of efficacy for osteoarthritis (OA) pain and stiffness than celecoxib 200 mg, and both COX-2 inhibitors had quicker onset than acetaminophen 4000 mg ... Median time for good or excellent PGART response was day 3 for rofecoxib 25 mg, day 4 for rofecoxib 12.5 mg, day 5 for celecoxib mg and day 6 for acetaminophen"

Eggs May Lower Breast Cancer Risk - WebMD, 2/20/03 - "eating about three eggs a week during adolescence decreased the risk of breast cancer by 18%. Diets rich in vegetable oils and dietary fiber had similar effects. But eating roughly one pat of butter a day increased risk by 6% ... eggs may be protective because they are high in essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. And studies suggest that fiber-rich foods reduce estrogen levels"

Plant Compound May Prevent Lung Cancer - WebMD, 2/19/03 - "deguelin is found in several different types of plant species and is part of a class of compounds in the flavonoid family ... deguelin appeared to target the cancerous and precancerous cells, stopping their growth, while having minimal effects on the normal, healthy cells ... deguelin is highly specific and seems to work by zeroing in on a particular molecular pathway associated with lung cancer ... the findings are especially interesting because there have been so few agents that have shown potential to stop the progression of lung cancer"

Fruits: Cancer-Fighting Foods - WebMD, 2/19/03 - "Compared with those who ate the least fruit as children, those who ate the most were about 40% less likely to get cancer 60 years later ... a variety of nutritional factors might explain fruit's protective effects, such as their high antioxidant, fiber, and vitamin Content. But when they looked at the cancer-fighting impact of vitamins C, E, and beta carotene separately, no single nutrient emerged as the winner" - It something to thing about when you have headings claiming that antioxidants don't work based on what they ate when they were 75 years old.

Mediterranean Diet Eases Rheumatoid Arthritis - WebMD, 2/19/03 - "significant improvement was reported by most of the 26 arthritic patients who followed the well-studied dietary regimen for three months. The Mediterranean diet includes olive and canola oils as the primary dietary sources of fat -- along with plenty of fish, poultry, produce, and legumes ... In addition to being good sources of heart-healthy fats, olive and canola oils are rich in oleic acid and vitamin E. Like vitamin E, oleic acid has an anti-inflammatory effect and is thought to reduce inflammatory protein levels ... Those on the Mediterranean diet first began to experience relief after six weeks (although their cholesterol levels dropped after three) and improvement continued throughout the study ... They lost an average of seven pounds by study's end" - See the tables on my fatty acids page for other sources of oleic acid (omega-9).

Paper Defines Female Androgen Insufficiency - Clinical Psychiatry News, 2/03 - "Androgens affect sexual desire, bone density, muscle mass and strength, adipose tissue distribution, mood, energy, and psychological well-being ... The free testosterone by dialysis is perhaps the most accurate but also the most costly and is not performed by most labs ... Until better options are commercially available, the panel advised clinicians to assess androgen production and androgen availability by obtaining two out of the following three values: total testosterone and sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG), free testosterone and SHBG, or free testosterone and total testosterone ... testosterone values should be obtained in the morning hours and in the middle third of the menstrual cycle in normally cycling premenopausal women ... The most useful measurement of adrenal androgen production in women is dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), which is reliable and can be used if a clinician suspects an adrenal cause for androgen insufficiency"

Randomized controlled trial of the effect of n–3 fatty acid supplementation on the metabolism of apolipoprotein B-100 and chylomicron remnants in men with visceral obesity1 - Am. J. of Clin. Nutr., 2/03 - "randomly assigned to receive either fish oil capsules (4 g/d, consisting of 45% eicosapentaenoic acid and 39% docosahexaenoic acid as ethyl esters) or matching placebo ... Fish oil supplementation significantly (P < 0.05) lowered plasma concentrations of triacylglycerols (-18%) and VLDL apo B (-20%) and the hepatic secretion of VLDL apo B (-29%) compared with placebo" - Doing the math, 45% of 4 grams equals 1,800 mg of EPA,  39% of 4 grams equals 1,560 mg of DHA.  Three TwinLab Mega Twin EPA plus three Jarrow Max DHA (the two strongest formulas I know) would be 2,100 mg EPA and 1,570 mg DHA.

A fermented milk high in bioactive peptides has a blood pressure–lowering effect in hypertensive subjects - Am. J. of Clin. Nutr., 2/03 - "received 150 mL/d [5 ounces] of either L. helveticus LBK-16H fermented milk or a control product for 21 wk after a 2-wk run-in period ... There was a mean difference of 6.7 +/- 3.0 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure (P = 0.030) and of 3.6 +/- 1.9 mm Hg (P = 0.059) in diastolic blood pressure between the test product and control groups" - Related articles:

Calcium, vitamin D, milk consumption, and hip fractures: a prospective study among postmenopausal women - Am. J. of Clin. Nutr., 2/03 - "Women consuming 12.5 µg vitamin D/d from food plus supplements had a 37% lower risk of hip fracture (RR = 0.63; 95% CI: 0.42, 0.94) than did women consuming < 3.5 µg/d. Total calcium intake was not associated with hip fracture risk (RR = 0.96; 95% CI: 0.68, 1.34 for 1200 compared with < 600 mg/d). Milk consumption was also not associated with a lower risk of hip fracture (P for trend = 0.21)"

Vitamin K intake and bone mineral density in women and men - Am. J. of Clin. Nutr., 2/03 - "Low dietary vitamin K intake was associated with low BMD in women ... In contrast, there was no association between dietary vitamin K intake and BMD in men"

Ingested probiotics reduce nasal colonization with pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and ß-hemolytic streptococci) - Am. J. of Clin. Nutr., 2/03 - "The results indicate that regular intake of probiotics can reduce PPB [potentially pathogenic bacteria] in the upper respiratory tract. The results also indicate a linkage of the lymphoid tissue between the gut and the upper respiratory tract"

Is the olive oil industry fraught with fraud? - Better Nutrition, 2/03 - "There are many inconsistencies in the olive oil marketplace, and an extremely low price should make you question the quality, and even the purity, of the oil ... Exposure to light and consistent high heat can also turn great oil into a vile, thick mess, so look for oils in dark glass bottles or in boxes, and store them in a cool, dark place ... Extra virgin olive oil has a large selection of antioxidants in the form of polyphenols—some so unique that they aren’t found in any other edible fruit or vegetable"

What is CLA and can it help me lose weight? - Dr. Murray - "Over 200 studies have shown that CLA may play a very important role in helping fight obesity, cancer, diabetes, and hardening of the arteries ... Weight loss was about the same for both groups, average of 5 pounds. So, why take CLA? Those taking CLA reported less fatigue, dizziness and nausea than those on the placebo" - See iHerb (5% discount code "qc") or Vitacosticon CLA products.
