Obesity
Increases Risk Of Prostate Cancer Recurrence For Both Blacks And Whites -
Science Daily, 8/17/09 - "We found that
higher BMI was associated with significantly
increased risk of cancer recurrence for both
blacks and whites ... Obesity is associated with more estrogen and less
testosterone, and it may be that lower testosterone promotes more aggressive
tumors as recent studies have suggested ... In addition, Jayachandran says
alteration in the production of other hormones, like insulin, insulin-like
growth factor or leptin, which occur in obese men, may also be involved in the
development of more aggressive tumors"
Carnitine Supplements Reverse Glucose Intolerance In Animals - Science
Daily, 8/17/09 - "After just eight weeks of
supplementation with
carnitine, the obese rats restored their
cells' fuel- burning capacity (which was shut down by a lack of natural
carnitine) and improved their glucose tolerance,
a health outcome that indicates a lower risk of
diabetes ... These results offer hope for a new therapeutic option for
people with glucose intolerance, older people, people with kidney disease, and
those with type 2 diabetes (what used to be called adult-onset diabetes) ...
Carnitine is a natural compound known for helping fatty acids enter the
mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells, where fatty acids are "burned" to give
cells energy for their various tasks. Carnitine also helps move excess fuel from
cells into the circulating blood, which then redistributes this energy source to
needier organs or to the kidneys for removal" - See

Low
Choline Levels In Pregnant Women Raise Babies' Risk For Brain And Spinal-cord
Defects, Study Shows - Science Daily, 8/16/09 - "Choline,
an essential nutrient found in egg yolks, soy, wheat germ and meats, was the
only nutrient measured whose blood levels were linked to risk of neural tube
defects" - See
citicholine at Amazon.com.
High-fat diets linked to poor mental function - Nutra USA, 8/14/09 -
"High consumption of fatty foods may reduce both
cognitive function and physical endurance ... The standard diet-fed animals
obtained 7.5 per cent of their calories from fat, while the high fat diet-fed
animals obtained 55 per cent of their calories from fat ... According to the
data, after only 5 days on the high-fat diet the physical endurance of the rats
decreased by 30 per cent, compared to animals on the low-fat diet. By the ninth
day, the animals were running 50 per cent less far ... their performance in the
maze task also decreased. The number of correct decisions before making a
mistake dropped from over six to an average of 5 to 5.5"
Lycopene linked to healthier blood vessels - Nutra USA, 8/13/09 -
"Higher levels of
lycopene in the blood are associated with lower
stiffness in the arteries ... women
with the highest average lycopene blood levels (more than 0.0431 millimoles per
litre) had the lowest baPWV values, compared to people with the lowest average
lycopene blood levels (less that 0.0342 mmol/L) ... According to their results,
women with the highest average lycopene blood levels (more than 0.0431
millimoles per litre) had the lowest baPWV values, compared to people with the
lowest average lycopene blood levels (less that 0.0342 mmol/L) ... these women
also had lower oxidised LDL levels, as well as larger LDL particles ... Levels
of C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation, were also lower in the women
with the highest lycopene levels" - See
lycopene at Amazon.com.
Danisco extends betaine’s sport science - Nutra USA, 8/13/09 -
"During various power, muscle endurance and anaerobic
power exercise tests over a two week period,
subjects given BetaPower showed a significant
improvement in lower body muscle endurance and quality of the workout compared
to those participants that were not given supplementation" - [Abstract]

More omega-3, less omega-6 for colorectal protection - Nutra USA, 8/12/09 -
"the dietary total
omega-6 to
omega-3 PUFA ratio was strongly associated
with colorectal cancer risk ... Compared to women
with the lowest ratio, women with the highest ratio of omega-6 to -3 had a
relative risk 95 per cent higher" - [Abstract]

Prehypertension is associated with insulin resistance - QJM. 2009 Aug 7 -
"All subjects received a 75-g oral glucose tolerance
test (OGTT) for the measurements of IR ... The prehypertensive subjects were
more obese and had higher levels of fasting triglycerides and 2-h insulin than
the normotensives. The subjects with prehypertension were more insulin resistant
than the counterparts, indicated by lower insulin sensitivity index, ISI(0,120),
values. While there was no difference between the two groups in insulin response
of OGTT after adjustments for confounders, the prehypertension group maintained
significant between-group differences in glucose response even when the
incremental insulin levels were added to covariates for adjustments ... Our data
show that prehypertension is associated with IR. The subjects with
prehypertension have clinical characteristics of the IR syndrome. It seems that
the prehypertension group cannot handle oral glucose challenge as well as the
normotension, probably a consequence of IR in prehypertension"
Effect of
Influenza Vaccination of Nursing Home Staff on Mortality of Residents: A
Cluster-Randomized Trial - J Am Geriatr Soc. 2009 Aug 4 -
"Influenza vaccine was administered to volunteer staff
after a face-to-face interview ... Staff influenza vaccination rates were 69.9%
in the vaccination arm versus 31.8% in the control arm. Primary unadjusted
analysis did not show significantly lower mortality in residents in the
vaccination arm (odds ratio=0.86, P=.08), although multivariate-adjusted
analysis showed 20% lower mortality (P=.02), and a strong correlation was
observed between staff vaccination coverage and all-cause mortality in residents
(correlation coefficient=-0.42, P=.007). In the vaccination arm, significantly
lower resident hospitalization rates were not observed, but ILI in residents was
31% lower (P=.007), and sick leave from work in staff was 42% lower" -
Note: I keep hearing people say it's not worth it to get the flu shot.
The way I look at it, the most likely cause of dying from the flu would be being
exposed to a virus that is very different than what you've been exposed to in
the past. I feel that the more flu shots you've had in the past, the lower
the chances of that happening. I mentioned before about a virus that I got
in Australia that I though would kill me but it's a good example.
It's got nothing to do with flu shots but it was probably a virus that
nearly killed me from neck cancer that
may have been prevented by the HPV vaccine. Something to think about for
people foreign things like the flu shot.
Beneficial Effects of Taurine on Cardiac Abnormality in NZB/W F1 Mice Fed
with a High-Cholesterol Diet J Agric Food Chem. 2009 Aug 14 -
"Improved cardiac histopathological changes were
observed in left ventricle tissues from the cholesterol/taurine
group as compared to the control or cholesterol group. Significant reductions of
TUNEL-positive cells, Fas death receptor-related components,
mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis, cardiac fibrosis, and fibrotic signaling
components were detected in the left ventricle tissues from the
cholesterol/taurine group as compared to the control or cholesterol group.
Additionally, cardiac IGR1R survival signaling components were significantly
increased in the left ventricle tissues from the cholesterol/taurine group as
compared to the control or cholesterol group. These findings revealed the
protective effects of taurine against the cardiac abnormalities in NZB/W F1 mice
and may suggest the potential for clinical application of taurine in treatment
of CVD in SLE" - See

Liver Safety
in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Treated with Pioglitazone: Results from a
3-Year, Randomized, Comparator-Controlled Study in the US - Drug Saf.
2009;32(9):787-800 - "No case of hepatic dysfunction or
hepatic failure was reported in either treatment group; two cases of hepatic
cirrhosis with glibenclamide were reported. This study demonstrates an hepatic
safety profile of pioglitazone similar to that of glibenclamide in long-term use
in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes"
Vitex
agnus-castus (Chaste-Tree/Berry) in the treatment of menopause-related
complaints - J Altern Complement Med. 2009 Aug;15(8):853-62 -
"We conclude that, while evidence from rigorous
randomized controlled trials is lacking for the individual herb in this context,
emerging pharmacological evidence supports a role for
V. agnus-castus in the alleviation of
menopausal symptoms and suggests that further investigation may be appropriate"
Dietary
correlates of urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin concentrations in the Nurses' Health
Study cohorts2 - Am J Clin Nutr. 2009 Aug 12 - "In
multivariate analyses, we found no significant associations between the intake
of various nutrients, including tryptophan and urinary
melatonin concentrations. A higher intake of
meat, particularly red meat, was associated with lower concentrations of aMT6s
(adjusted mean concentrations of aMT6s across increasing quartiles of red meat
intake were 17.9, 17.0, 18.1, and 15.3 ng/mg creatinine; P for trend = 0.02). In
contrast, neither intake of poultry (including turkey) nor fish was associated
with aMT6s concentrations ... Although no specific nutrients were associated
with altered concentrations of melatonin, our findings raise the possibility
that several specific foods, including red meat, could affect cancer risk
through the lowering of melatonin concentrations"
Chinese tea
consumption is associated with longer telomere length in elderly Chinese men
- Br J Nutr. 2009 Aug 12:1-7 - "In men, only Chinese
tea consumption was significantly associated with TL after adjustment for
demographics and lifestyle factors (P = 0.002). Mean difference in
TL for those in the highest quartile of
Chinese tea consumption (>3 cups/d or >750 ml/d) as compared with those in the
lowest quartile of Chinese tea consumption ( </= 0.28 cups/d or </= 70 ml/d) was
0.46 kb, corresponding to approximately a difference of 5 years of life"

Effect of betaine supplementation on power performance and fatigue - J Int
Soc Sports Nutr. 2009 Feb 27;6:7 - "Subjects were tested
prior to the onset of supplementation (T1) and 7 (T2) and 14 days (T3) following
supplementation ... No differences were seen at T2 or T3 in the repetitions
performed to exhaustion or in the number of repetitions performed at 90% of both
peak and mean power between the groups in the bench press exercise. The number
of repetitions performed in the squat exercise for BET was significantly greater
(p < 0.05) than that seen for PL at T2. The number of repetitions performed at
90% or greater of peak power in the squat exercise
was significantly greater for BET at both T2 and
T3 than PL" - See

Resveratrol
prevents hyperglycemia-induced endothelial dysfunction via activation of
adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase - Biochem Biophys Res
Commun. 2009 Aug 7 - "Endothelial dysfunction secondary
to persistent hyperglycemia plays a key role in
the development of type 2 diabetic vascular
disease ... These results provide new insight into the protective properties of
resveratrol against endothelial dysfunction
caused by high glucose, which is attributed to the AMPK mediated reduction of
superoxide level" -

A
prospective study of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids and colorectal cancer
risk in Chinese women - Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2009
Aug;18(8):2283-91 - "The dietary total
n-6 to
n-3 PUFA ratio was strongly associated with
colorectal cancer risk. Compared with women in the
lowest quintile group, elevated relative risks (RR) were observed for the second
[RR, 1.52; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.00-2.32], third (RR, 2.20; 95% CI,
1.41-3.45), fourth (RR, 1.65; 95% CI, 0.99-2.75), and fifth (RR, 1.95; 95% CI,
1.07-3.54) quintile groups. Arachidonic acid was associated with colorectal
cancer risk with elevated RRs of 1.20(Q2-Q1) (95% CI, 0.87-1.64), 1.44(Q3-Q1)
(95% CI, 1.05-1.98), 1.61(Q4-Q1) (95% CI, 1.17-2.23), and 1.39(Q5-Q1) (95% CI,
0.97-1.99; P(trend) = 0.03) with increasing dietary quintile"

Metabolic Factors May Play A Role In Risk For Breast Cancer - Science
Daily, 6/30/09 - "The metabolic syndrome is
characterized by elevated insulin levels, and in recent years scientists
have proposed that insulin may contribute directly or indirectly to the
development of breast cancer ... women who had the metabolic syndrome during
the three to five years prior to breast cancer diagnosis had roughly a
doubling of risk ... Findings also showed significant associations with
elevated blood glucose levels, triglycerides and diastolic blood pressure.
For diastolic blood pressure, the result was stronger, with more than a
two-fold increased risk (relative risk = 2.4). Generally, for both
triglycerides and glucose the relative risk was about 1.7 for all breast
cancer"

So Sweet: Over-consumption Of Sugar Linked To Aging - Science Daily,
3/9/09 - "We know that lifespan can be extended in
animals by restricting calories such as sugar intake ...it's not sugar
itself that is important in this process but the ability of cells to sense
its presence ... the lifespan of yeast cells increased when glucose was
decreased from their diet. They then asked whether the increase in lifespan
was due to cells decreasing their ability to produce energy or to the
decrease in signal to the cells by the glucose sensor ... cells unable to
consume glucose as energy source are still sensitive to the pro-aging
effects of glucose. Conversely, obliterating the sensor that measures the
levels of glucose significantly increased lifespan"

Diabetes
Linked To Cognitive Deterioration - Science Daily, 3/5/09 -
"people with diabetes were 1.5 more likely to experience
cognitive decline, and 1.6 more likely to suffer from dementia than people
without diabetes ... suggests that higher-than-average levels of blood glucose
(blood sugar) may have a role in this relationship ... in people with type 2
diabetes, higher levels of haemoglobin A1C (a
measure of average blood glucose) are significantly associated with poorer
performance on three cognitive tasks which require memory, speed and ability to
manage multiple tasks at the same time. A higher A1C level was also associated
with a lower score on a test of global cognitive function ... lowering A1C
levels could slow the accelerated rate of cognitive decline experienced by
people with diabetes"

Pharmacother. 2007 Dec;8(18):3147-58 - "Both studies
have shown that intensive lifestyle intervention could reduce the
progression of IGT to diabetes by 58%. Furthermore, four currently-available
drugs have been established as being effective in preventing diabetes in
subjects with prediabetes. The Diabetes Prevention Program revealed that
metformin 850 mg b.i.d. reduced the risk of diabetes by 31%. The STOP-NIDDM
(Study To Prevent Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) trial (n = 1429)
showed that acarbose 100 mg t.i.d. with meals decreased the incidence of
diabetes by 36% when the diagnosis was based on 2 oral glucose tolerance
tests. The XENDOS (Xenical in the Prevention of Diabetes in Obese Subjects)
study examined the use of orlistat, an antiobesity drug, as an adjunct to an
intensive lifestyle modification program in obese non-diabetic subjects.
Orlistat treatment resulted in a 37% decline in the development of diabetes.
More recently, the DREAM (Diabetes Reduction Assessment with Ramipril and
Rosiglitazone Medication) study (n = 5269) demonstrated that rosiglitazone
at 8 mg once/day in subjects with prediabetes (IGT and/or impaired fasting
glucose) was effective in reducing the risk of diabetes by 60%. It can be
concluded that Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed through lifestyle
modifications and/or pharmacologic interventions. This is a fact"

Pioglitazone Improves Cardiac Function and Alters Myocardial Substrate

Diabetes Mellitus - Circulation. 2009 Apr 6 -

matching placebo for 24 weeks ... No patient developed heart failure. Both
therapies similarly improved glycemic control, whole-body insulin
sensitivity, and blood pressure. Pioglitazone versus metformin improved the
early peak flow rate (P=0.047) and left ventricular compliance. Pioglitazone
versus metformin increased myocardial glucose uptake (P<0.001), but
pioglitazone-related diastolic improvement was not associated with changes
in myocardial substrate metabolism. Metformin did not affect myocardial
function but decreased cardiac work relative to pioglitazone (P=0.006), a
change that was paralleled by a reduced myocardial glucose uptake and fatty
acid oxidation. Neither treatment affected cardiac high-energy phosphate
metabolism or triglyceride content. Only pioglitazone reduced hepatic
triglyceride content" - I still take pioglitazone even though I don't

Catechin
prevents endothelial dysfunction in the prediabetic stage of OLETF rats by
reducing vascular NADPH oxidase activity and expression -
Atherosclerosis. 2009 Feb 3 - "studies have
indicated that regular intake of green tea reduces the risk of
cardiovascular diseases. This study examined whether catechin prevents
endothelial dysfunction and hyperglycemia in the prediabetic stage of a type
2 diabetic (T2D) rat ... Catechin significantly reduced blood pressure
(OLETF vs. Catechin-OLETF; 138+/-16mmHg vs. 126+/-16mmHg, p=0.013), fasting
sugar (129+/-11mg/dL vs. 118+/-9mg/dL, p=0.02) and the insulin level
(2.13+/-1.29ng/mL vs. 0.53+/-0.27ng/mL, p=0.004). In the aorta of
Catechin-OLETF at 25 weeks, endothelium-dependent relaxations were
significantly improved and NADPH oxidase activity in aortic rings was
markedly decreased compared with those of OLETF. Catechin reduced vascular
reactive oxygen species formation in the aorta and suppressed the expression
of p22phox and p47phox NADPH oxidase subunits" - See

Roundworm's Telomeres Help Scientists To Tease Apart Different Types Of
Aging - Science Daily, 8/8/05 - "telomeres alone
do not dictate aging and lifespan ... For successful aging you have to
control both, aging in your dividing cells, which hinges on telomere
maintenance, but also aging in your non-dividing cells. We thought that
