Low
Glycemic Breakfast May Increase Benefits Of Working Out - Science Daily,
4/15/09 - "Overall, fat oxidation was higher in the
LGI treatment than in the HGI treatment (P <
0.05) during the post-breakfast and exercise
periods. Following lunch, fullness scores were higher in the LGI trial than in
the HGI trial (P < 0.05). The authors concluded that consuming a LGI breakfast
increases fat oxidation during subsequent exercise and improved satiety during
recovery in sedentary females. As such, individuals trying to shed fat may
consider choosing LGI foods eaten prior to when they exercise"
Taking
Statins? Five Ways to Boost Your Energy - ABC News, 4/14/09 -
"It's a cruel irony that if
statins make patients more lethargic, it could impair their ability to
exercise or make dietary changes that would help them address their high
cholesterol ... some studies have found that patients' energy levels increased
while using CoQ10 and statins together ... Try
pomegranate juice or a small chunk of dark
chocolate, both of which have beneficial antioxidants ... Skimping on sleep has
been found to increase calcium deposit build-up in your arteries" - See

Study: No Vision Loss From ED Drugs - WebMD, 4/13/09 -
"researchers randomly assigned 244 healthy men age 30 to
65, some with mild erectile dysfunction, to take a daily dose of 5 milligrams of
Cialis, 50 milligrams of
Viagra, or a placebo for six
months ... The results showed no significant differences between those who took
the erectile dysfunction drugs or the placebo on ERG, vision function tests,
pressure within the eyeball, or assessments of the anatomy of the eye"
Metformin May Have Long-Term Benefits in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes -
Medscape, 4/10/09 - "Compared with the placebo group,
the metformin group had prevention of weight
gain (mean weight gain, −3.07 kg; range, −3.85 to −2.28 kg; P < .001), better
glycemic control (mean reduction in glycated hemoglobin level, 0.4%; 95%
confidence interval [CI], 0.55 – 0.25; P < .001), and lower insulin requirements
(mean reduction, 19.63 U/day; 95% CI, 24.91 – 14.36 U/day; P < .001) ... Add-on
metformin improved glycemic control and reduced body weight and insulin
requirements"
Omega-3
Fatty Acids May Benefit Cancer Patients Undergoing Major Operations -
Science Daily, 4/10/09 - "A randomised controlled trial
showed omega-3 fatty acids given as part of
an oral nutritional supplement resulted in the preservation of muscle mass in
patients undergoing surgery for
oesopahageal cancer, a procedure normally associated with significant weight
loss and quality of life issues ... Patients given the standard supplement
without omega 3 lost a significant amount of weight comprising 100% muscle mass.
In fact 68% of patients suffered ‘clinically severe’ weight loss post surgery in
the standard group (without omega 3) versus only 8% in the omega 3 group"

Chronic
Insomnia With Short Sleep Duration Is Significant Risk Factor For Hypertension
- Science Daily, 4/9/09 - "participants with
insomnia and an objectively measured, severely
short sleep duration of less than five hours had a
risk for hypertension that was 500 percent
higher than participants without insomnia who slept more than six hours. People
with insomnia and a moderately short sleep duration of five to six hours had a
risk for hypertension that was 350 percent higher than normal sleepers"
Vitamin
D Deficiency Related To Increased Inflammation In Healthy Women - Science
Daily, 4/8/09 - "75 percent of Americans do not get
enough Vitamin D. Researchers have found that
the deficiency may negatively impact immune function and cardiovascular health
and increase cancer risk. Now, a University of Missouri nutritional sciences
researcher has found that vitamin D deficiency is associated with
inflammation, a negative response of the
immune system, in healthy women ... This may explain the vitamin's role in the
prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases, including heart disease,
multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis ... To improve vitamin D status and
achieve its related health benefits, most people should get at least 1000 IU of
vitamin D per day" - See

Pioglitazone
Improves Cardiac Function and Alters Myocardial Substrate Metabolism Without
Affecting Cardiac Triglyceride Accumulation and High-Energy Phosphate Metabolism
in Patients With Well-Controlled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus - Circulation.
2009 Apr 6 - "were assigned to
pioglitazone (30 mg/d) or
metformin (2000 mg/d) and matching placebo for
24 weeks ... No patient developed heart failure. Both therapies similarly
improved glycemic control, whole-body insulin sensitivity, and blood pressure.
Pioglitazone versus metformin improved the early peak flow rate (P=0.047) and
left ventricular compliance. Pioglitazone versus metformin increased myocardial
glucose uptake (P<0.001), but pioglitazone-related diastolic improvement was not
associated with changes in myocardial substrate metabolism. Metformin did not
affect myocardial function but decreased cardiac work relative to pioglitazone
(P=0.006), a change that was paralleled by a reduced myocardial glucose uptake
and fatty acid oxidation. Neither treatment affected cardiac high-energy
phosphate metabolism or triglyceride content. Only pioglitazone reduced hepatic
triglyceride content" - I still take pioglitazone even though I don't
have diabetes because I feel that higher glucose levels are a major cause of
aging. There doesn't seem to be any evidence that it has the heart rises
that rosiglitazone has. See Pioglitazone at

An inverse
relationship between plasma n-3 fatty acids and C-reactive protein in healthy
individuals - Eur J Clin Nutr. 2009 Apr 8 - "The
highest hs-CRP tertile (>3.0 mg/l) had significantly lower concentrations of
total n-3 fatty acids, EPA and DPA, when
compared with the other tertiles (P<0.05). This study provides evidence that in
healthy individuals, plasma n-3 fatty acid concentration is inversely related to
hs-CRP concentration, a surrogate
marker of CVD risk"

highest versus the lowest quintile of fish intake, and 1.28 (1.18, 1.38) for
breastfeeding for > or =10 mo compared with breastfeeding for < or =1 mo].
Associations were similar for development at 6 mo. ... Maternal fish intake

gestation and randomised into three treatment groups: a single oral dose of
200,000 IU vitamin D, a daily supplement of 800 IU vitamin D from 27 weeks
until delivery and a no treatment group ... The final maternal
25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were significantly higher in the supplemented
group (daily dose (median) 42 (IQR 31-76) nmol/l, stat dose (median 34 (IQR
30-46) nmol/l vs. median 27 (IQR 27-39) nmol/l in the no treatment;
p<0.0001) and significantly fewer women with secondary hyperparathyroidism
in the supplemented group ... Single or daily dose improved

sufficient. Further research is required to determine the optimal timing and

Evidence Of Periodontal Disease Leading To Gestational Diabetes -
Science Daily, 4/4/09 - "Gestational diabetes is
characterized by an inability to transport glucose -- the main source of
fuel for the body -- to the cells during pregnancy. The condition usually
disappears when the pregnancy ends, but women who have had gestational
diabetes are at a greater risk of developing the most common form of
diabetes, known as Type 2 diabetes, later in life ... In addition to its
potential role in preterm delivery, evidence that gum disease may also
contribute to gestational diabetes suggests that women should see a dentist
if they plan to get pregnant, and after becoming pregnant"

preterm delivery is a new finding and requires caution in interpretation"
