Association of maternal
vitamin D status with the risk of preeclampsia - Food Funct 2023 May 2 -

mid-pregnancy, before women developed clinical preeclampsia, suggests that
vitamin D may have a role in its pathophysiology" - See

Association between Folic

Province: A Cross-Sectional Study - Evid Based Complement Alternat Med 2022
Sep 6 - "hypertensive disorder complicating pregnancy
(HDCP) ... Maternal women with and without FA supplement intake were compared in
this study. FA supplementation included 0.4 mg FA (0.4 FA), multivitamins with
0.4 mg FA (multivitamin (MV)+0.4 FA), and multivitamins with 0.8 mg FA (MV + 0.8
FA) ... MV supplement with 0.8 mg FA during early pregnancy may be effective in

L-citrulline ameliorates
pathophysiology in a rat model of superimposed preeclampsia - Br J Pharmacol
2021 Dec 22 - "Preeclampsia, characterized by
hypertension, proteinuria, and fetal growth restriction, is one of the leading
causes of maternal and perinatal mortality. By far, there is no effective
pharmacological therapy for preeclampsia ... This study shows that L-citrulline
supplementation reduces gestational hypertension, improves placentation and
fetal growth in a rat model of superimposed preeclampsia. L-citrulline
supplementation may represent an effective and safe therapeutic strategy for
preeclampsia that benefit both the mother and the fetus" - See

Higher
manganese levels in early pregnancy linked to lower preeclampsia risk -
Science Daily, 7/7/30 - "These new findings are
especially relevant, considering that preeclampsia rates are increasing and we
still lack any good strategy for preventing it ... higher manganese levels in
the first trimester were associated with a lower risk of preeclampsia later in
the pregnancy, depending on the dose. This suggests that incrementally more
manganese would bring incrementally less risk. The researchers divided the women
into three equally sized groups according to their measured manganese levels --
low, medium, and high -- and found that those in the high-manganese group had
just half the risk of preeclampsia, compared to those in the low-manganese
group" - See manganese at Amazon.com

Bit of Chocolate in Pregnancy May Help Mom, Baby - WebMD, 2/4/16 -
"Pregnant women who nibble just a small piece of
chocolate each day may improve the circulatory health of their unborn child ...
The tiny treat may also reduce the risk for preeclampsia ... All were instructed
to consume 30 grams of chocolate (a little more than one ounce) each day over a
12-week period. That's equivalent to about one small square of chocolate per day
... Half of the women consumed high-flavanol chocolate, while the other half
were given low-flavanol chocolate ... simply consuming a small amount of
chocolate -- no matter what the flavanol content -- was associated with notable
improvements in all blood circulation and velocity measures compared to the
general population" - See Ghirardelli Chocolate Intense Dark Squares, Midnight Reverie, 4.12 oz.,

New
study indicates that metformin has the potential to prevent and treat
preeclampsia - Science Daily, 12/22/15 - "the drug
metformin decreases the production of the two toxins elevated in preeclampsia
and also helps heal injured blood vessels ... Metformin appears to be the
aspirin of the 21st century, because the drug has been discovered to have
unexpected health benefits not only in diabetes, but also in polycystic ovarian
disease and recent work has highlighted its anti-cancer properties" - See

Low
vitamin D levels during pregnancy may increase risk of severe preeclampsia -
Science Daily, 1/27/14 - "researchers studied blood
samples collected from 700 pregnant women who later developed preeclampsia in an
effort to examine a woman's vitamin D status during pregnancy and her risk of
developing preeclampsia ... also studied blood samples from 3,000 mothers who
did not develop preeclampsia ... vitamin D sufficiency was associated with a 40
percent reduction in risk of severe preeclampsia. But there was no relationship
between vitamin D and mild preeclampsia" - See

Probiotic intake linked to fewer birth complications - Nutra USA, 9/13/11 -
"The Norwegian researchers analyzed data from 33,399
women participating in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study ... The
intake of lactobacilli-containing milk-based products was determined using a
food frequency questionnaire, while pre-eclampsia was determined using the
Norwegian Medical Birth Registry ... the daily intake of at least 140 mL of
probiotic milk products was associated with a 20% reduced risk of pre-eclampsia
... The effects were more pronounced for severe pre-eclampsia, with daily and
weekly intakes of probiotic products associated with a 39% and 25%,
respectively" - [Abstract]

Dietary Supplement May Help Prevent Preeclampsia - WebMD, 5/19/11 -
"women who ate daily food bars containing the amino acid
L-arginine and antioxidant vitamins during pregnancy had a much lower incidence
of preeclampsia than women who ate bars containing the antioxidant vitamins
alone or bars containing neither supplement ... far fewer of the women in the
L-arginine plus vitamin group developed preeclampsia (12.7%) than women in the
vitamin-alone (22.5%) group and no-supplement (30.2%) group" - See

A Nested
Case-Control Study of Midgestation Vitamin D Deficiency and Risk of Severe
Preeclampsia - J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2010 Aug 18 -
"Vitamin D may be important in the pathogenesis of
severe preeclampsia ... Midgestation maternal 25(OH)D concentration was lower in
women who subsequently developed severe preeclampsia compared with controls
[median (interquartile range), 75 (47-107) nmol/liter vs. 98 (68-113)
nmol/liter; P = 0.01]. Midgestation maternal 25(OH)D of less than 50 nmol/liter
was associated with an almost 4-fold odds of severe preeclampsia (unadjusted
odds ratio, 3.63; 95% confidence interval, 1.52-8.65) compared with midgestation
levels of at least 75 nmol/liter. Adjustment for known confounders strengthened
the observed association (adjusted odds ratio, 5.41; 95% confidence interval,
2.02-14.52). Conclusion: Maternal midgestation vitamin D deficiency was
associated with increased risk of severe preeclampsia. Vitamin D deficiency may
be a modifiable risk factor for severe preeclampsia" - See

Maternal Vitamin D Deficiency May Increase Risk for Preeclampsia -
Medscape, 6/3/08 - "Compared with controls, women
who subsequently developed preeclampsia had lower adjusted serum 25(OH)D
concentrations in early pregnancy (geometric mean, 45.4 vs 53.1 nmol/L; 95%
confidence interval [CI], 38.6 - 53.4 vs 47.1 - 59.9 nmol/L; P < .01) ...
After adjusting for potential confounders, a 50-nmol/L decrease in 25(OH)D
concentration was associated with twice the risk for preeclampsia (adjusted
odds ratio [OR], 2.4; 95% CI, 1.1 - 5.4). Compared with control newborns,
those of women with preeclampsia were twice as likely to have 25(OH)D
concentrations less than 37.5 nmol/L" - See
