A New Drug Switched Off My Appetite. What’s Left? - Wired, 2/3/23 - "Mounjaro did what decades of struggle with managing weight couldn’t. Welcome to the post-hunger age."

Judge Weighs Key Evidence Ahead of First Zantac Cancer Trial -Medscape, 2/17/23 - "Brent Wisner, a lawyer for Goetz and other Zantac plaintiffs, argued that jurors should hear expert testimony about studies that he called "pretty powerful evidence that there is a causal relationship" between consuming Zantac's active ingredient, ranitidine, and cancer" - Oops. That's something else a doctor prescribed in the past.

Abstracts from this week:

Pioglitazone Use and Reduced Risk of Dementia in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus With a History of Ischemic Stroke - Neurology 2023 Feb 15 - "Pioglitazone use was associated with a reduced risk of dementia, compared with non-use (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) = 0.84, 95% CI, 0.75-0.95); the risk reduction in dementia was greater among patients with a history of ischemic heart disease or stroke before DM onset (adjusted HR = 0.46, 95% CI, 0.24-0.90, adjust HR = 0.57, 95% CI, 0.38-0.86, respectively). The incidence of stroke was also reduced by pioglitazone use (adjusted HR = 0.81" - See pioglitazone at ReliableRXPharmacy.

Garlic Extract Participates in the Proliferation and Apoptosis of Nonsmall Cell Lung Cancer Cells Via Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Pathway - Evid Based Complement Alternat Med 2023 Feb 6 - "To investigate the effect of garlic extract (GE) on the proliferation and apoptosis of cell lines A549 and H1299 in lung cancer (LC) ... GE could exert toxic effects on A549 and H1299 cells, inhibit cell proliferation, promote apoptosis, and attenuate cell migration. Meanwhile, it might induce apoptosis of A549 and H1299 cells through the caspase signal pathway, which is positively correlated with the mass action concentration and is expected to be a new drug for LC treatment" - See garlic supplements at Amazon.com.

Allium vegetable intake associated with the risk of incident gastric cancer: a continuous follow-up study of a randomized intervention trial - Am J Clin Nutr 2023 Jan - "We found a significant reduction in the risk of developing GC with increasing dietary intake of allium vegetables, particularly garlic vegetables. The findings add to the literature on the potential inverse association of garlic vegetable intake with the risk of GC, therefore holding public health implications for dietary recommendations" - See garlic supplements at Amazon.com.

Impact of lifestyle factors on dietary vitamin B6 intake and plasma pyridoxal 5'-phosphate level in UK adults: National Diet and Nutrition Survey Rolling Programme (NDNS) (2008-2017) - Br J Nutr 2023 Feb 15 - "Reduction in dietary vitamin B6 intakes is associated with increased relative risk of diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, and cognitive dysfunction. All forms of dietary vitamin B6 are converted to pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), that is needed for the proper function of a spectrum of metabolic pathways needed to maintain health ... Among UK adults, the median intakes of total population of dietary vitamin B6 met the RNI and median plasma PLP concentrations were above the cut-off of vitamin B6 deficiency, however, we found association between reduction in vitamin B6 intake and plasma PLP concentration and age group (P<0.001). Smokers had significantly lower plasma PLP concentrations than the non-smokers (P<0.001). Moreover, regression analysis showed some commonly used medications were associated with plasma PLP levels reduction (P <0.05). Taken together, we report on a tendency for dietary vitamin B6 intake and plasma PLP concentrations to decrease with age, and lifestyle factors such as smoking, and medication usage. This information could have important implications in smokers, and in elderly population using multiple medications" - See vitamin B6 at Amazon.com.

Combinatorial treatment with Silybum marianum essential oil enhances the therapeutic efficacy of a 5-fluorouracil base therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma - Phytother Res 2023 Feb 14 - "Silybum marianum seeds contain a family of flavonolignans which can regulate cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis ... Results revealed that the combination of S. marianum and 5-FU prolonged survival in a mouse model of HCC compared to either treatment alone" - See Silybum marianum oil at Amazon.com.

Eicosapentaenoic Acid Protects against Metabolic Impairments in the APPswe/PS1dE9 Alzheimer's Disease Mouse Model - J Nutr 2023 Feb 1 - "Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disease characterized by amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques. Systemic inflammation and obesity may exacerbate AD pathogenesis ... To our knowledge, this is the first report that EPA reduces serum Aβ1-40 in obese AD male mice, warranting further investigations into tissue-specific mechanisms of EPA in AD" - See omega-3 supplements at Amazon.com.

Early Childhood Lutein and Zeaxanthin Intake Is Positively Associated with Early Childhood Receptive Vocabulary and Mid-Childhood Executive Function But No Other Cognitive or Behavioral Outcomes in Project Viva - J Nutr 2022 Nov - "Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids associated with better cognition in older adults. Recent evidence suggests that their dietary intake may also have cognitive implications in childhood ... The overall findings do not provide strong evidence of an association between child L/Z intake and cognition and behavior. However, the positive associations found between early childhood L/Z intake and early childhood receptive vocabulary and mid-childhood executive function, in addition to previous evidence of neurodevelopmental benefit of L/Z intake, suggest that this relation deserves further investigation" - See lutein at Amazon.com and astaxanthin at Amazon.com.

Efficacy of curcumin plus piperine co-supplementation in moderate-to-high hepatic steatosis: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial - Phytother Res 2023 Feb 17 - "Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a global health problem that can progress to steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of curcumin + piperine on cardiometabolic risk factors, as well as hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in NAFLD patients with moderate-to-high hepatic steatosis ... Curcumin + piperine decreased waist circumference (p = 0.026), systolic blood pressure (p = 0.001), total cholesterol (p = 0.004), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (p = 0.006), FBG (p = 0.002), alanine transaminase (p = 0.007) and aspartate transaminase (p = 0.012) compared with placebo. However, fibroscan measurement did not differ between curcumin + piperine and placebo groups (p > 0.05). Fibroscan measurement as a marker of NAFLD improvement did not differ after 12 weeks of curcumin + piperine; however, curcumin + piperine may be considered as an adjunct therapy to improve anthropometric measures, blood pressure, lipid profile, blood glucose, and liver function in NAFLD patients" - See curcumin at Amazon.com and piperine extract at Amazon.com.

Safety and Efficacy of Moderately-High Dose Turmacin® (Turmerosaccharide >10% w/w) Supplementation on Joint Discomfort in Healthy Adults - A Pilot Proof-of-Concept Single Arm Study - J Diet Suppl 2023 Feb 14 - "Turmeric is well-known for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties but 69.4% of the turmeric rhizome contains Turmerosaccharides whose clinical benefit is still unexplored. Turmacin®/NR-INF-02 is an aqueous extract of Turmeric containing Turmerosaccharides (>10%w/w) with negligible curcuminoids ... In summary, Turmacin® supplements given at a dose of 2 g/day was safe and tolerable. Similar to the previous study with low dose Turmacin®, there was a significant increase in pain threshold and decrease in the maximum pain score post intervention" - See curcumin at Amazon.com.

Study of Sirolimus in Patients With Advanced Pancreatic Cancer - clinicaltrials.gov, 9/7/18 - "In preclinical studies, investigators found that rapamycin can effectively inhibit the angiogenesis of liver cancer led by tumor-associated macrophages (TAM), thereby inhibiting the progression of liver Cancer. In vitro experiments on pancreatic cancer showed that rapamycin can directly inhibit the proliferation of pancreatic cancer cells. After the treatment with rapamycin in the homologous xenograft tumor model of mice, it was found that the tumor growth of mice was significantly inhibited. Further analysis suggested that rapamycin not only directly inhibits tumor proliferation, but also reverses the immune suppressive microenvironment of pancreatic cancer and promotes the T-cell-mediated anti-tumor immune response.Preclinical findings suggest that rapamycin may benefit survival in pancreatic cancer patients, which makes us very interested in the efficacy of rapamycin in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer" - See Siromus (rapamycin) at ReliableRXPharmacy.

Neat Tech Stuff / "How To's":

Lotta medical facilities don't allow cloth masks this days. These are only 10 cents each.

Love these Carhartt hats. I've tried other brands of faded cotton hats but the brims were too long.
