Is there a relationship
between dietary sodium and potassium intake and clinical findings of a migraine
headache? - Br J Nutr 2021 Aug 11 - "Migraine
Headache Index Score (MHIS) ... After controlling for potential confounders, the
24-hour urine Na was positively associated with a longer headache duration
(β=0.29; 95% CI: 0.06, 0.53) in the group with the highest urine Na levels as
compared to the group with the lowest levels. After adjustments for potential
confounders, an increase of 13.05 in the MHIS was observed when the 24-hour
urine Na level increased from the first to the third tertile ... Our findings
suggested that a higher 24-hour urine Na level was positively associated with a
longer duration of migraine headaches and a higher MHIS"

Attenuation of chronic
tension headache frequency and severity with daily L-arginine and aged garlic
extract dietary supplementation - Eur J Clin Nutr 2021 Jul 23 -
"A 74-year-old female subject with suboptimal management
of episodic tension headache was treated with a daily dose of 1.5 g L-arginine
and 1.2 g aged garlic extract (AGE) ... Within 6 weeks of commencing treatment,
her self-reported symptoms improved markedly and were sustained at 2 years
following commencement. We propose that the putative beneficial effect of
L-arginine and AGE in this patient is because of the well-established systemic
vasodilatory effects of L-arginine and aged garlic extract. On the hypothesis
that migraine is precipitated by cerebral microvascular constriction, we
recommend a double-blind randomised controlled trial to clinically test this
hypothesis in migraine patients" - See

Consuming a diet with more fish fats, less vegetable oils can reduce migraine
headaches, study finds - Science Daily, 7/1/21 -
"The diet lower in vegetable oil and higher in fatty fish produced between 30%
and 40% reductions in total headache hours per day, severe headache hours per
day, and overall headache days per month compared to the control group. Blood
samples from this group of participants also had lower levels of pain-related
lipids" - See omega-3 supplements at Amazon.com and

Effect of
Vitamin B2 supplementation on migraine prophylaxis: a systematic
review and meta-analysis - Nutr Neurosci 2021 Mar 29 -
"A pooled analysis of available

B2 400 mg/day for three months supplementation had significant
effect on days, duration, frequency, and pain score of migraine
attacks" - See - See

Dietary Magnesium and
Migraine in Adults - Medscape, 3/22/21 - "Magnesium
consumption in the highest quartile (Q) was associated with lower odds of
migraine than in the lowest Q for both dietary (OR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.63, 0.92,
p = 0.006) and total (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.62, 0.99, p = 0.042) magnesium
intake in adjusted models ... These results suggest inadequate consumption of
magnesium intake is associated with migraine in U.S. adults ages 20–50. Further
prospective investigations are warranted to evaluate the role of dietary
magnesium intake on migraine" - See

Episodic primary migraine
headache: supplementary prophylaxis with Pycnogenol® prevents attacks and
controls oxidative stress - Panminerva Med 2020 Jun;62(2):102-108 -
"To manage MH, these subjects used only a few drugs (antiemetics,
analgesics on demand) and lifestyle changes; only very occasionally they used
other, more specific products such as triptans. Study groups: one group used
only standard management (SM), basically, management on demand. Oral magnesium
and riboflavin (vitamin B2) were used with lipoic acid as they are considered
useful to improve MH. Another group used the supplement Pycnogenol® (150 mg/day
for 8 weeks) in addition to SM. These two groups were compared to a third
(non-parallel, observational) group using topiramate (50 mg/day). If needed,
subjects were allowed to use rescue medications ... The number of migraine
attacks were significantly reduced during the observation period with
Pycnogenol® (P<0.05) in comparison with SM. Supplementation was more effective
in reducing the use of rescue medications (P<0.05) including analgesics compared
to SM. At 8 weeks, the pain score was lower with Pycnogenol in comparison with
SM (P<0.05). The working incapacity was significantly lower with Pycnogenol®
than in the SM group (P<0.05). The number of migraine attacks was lower with
topiramate compared to SM. Pain score, working incapacity and use of rescue
medication were lower with topiramate than in SM. However, adverse effects with
topiramate, included paresthesia, fatigue, dizziness and nausea even at low
dosages complicated management. Some 50% of these side effects require a form of
further treatment including medications. Oxidative stress: all included subjects
had high oxidative stress at baseline. At 8 weeks, the level of plasma free
radicals was significantly lowered with Pycnogenol® (P<0.05), but not in the SM
or topiramate group" - [Nutra

Migraine headaches? Consider aspirin for treatment and prevention - Science
Daily, 12/3/19 - "high-dose aspirin, in doses from 900
to 1,300 milligrams given at the onset of symptoms, is an effective and safe
treatment option for acute migraine headaches. In addition, some but not all
randomized trials suggest the possibility that daily aspirin in doses from 81 to
325 milligrams may be an effective and safe treatment option for the prevention
of recurrent migraine headaches"

The synergistic effects
of nano-curcumin and coenzyme Q10 supplementation in migraine prophylaxis: a
randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial - Nutr Neurosci. 2019 Jun
26:1-10 - "The subjects were randomly divided into four
groups as (1) combination of nano-curcumin (80 mg) plus CoQ10 (300 mg), (2) nano-curcumin
(80 mg), (3) CoQ10 (300 mg) and (4) the control (nano-curcumin and CoQ10 placebo
included oral paraffin oil) beside usual prophylactic drugs for 8 weeks ... The
results showed a significant effect of nano-curcumin and CoQ10 supplementation
on frequency, severity, duration of migraine attacks and HDR compared to other
groups (All P < 0.001). Nano-curcumin and CoQ10 group also had better scores in
migraine-specific questionnaires at the end of the study compared to other
groups (All P < 0.001). There were no side effects reported by the participants" -

The effects of a
multispecies probiotic supplement on inflammatory markers and episodic and
chronic migraine characteristics: A randomized double-blind controlled trial
- Cephalalgia. 2019 Jan 8 - "Forty episodic and 39
chronic migraine patients who completed this randomized double-blind controlled
trial received two capsules of multispecies probiotic or placebo ... After a
10-week intervention, among episodic migraineurs the mean frequency of migraine
attacks significantly reduced in the probiotic group compare to the placebo
group (mean change: -2.64 vs. 0.06; respectively, p < 0.001). A significant
reduction was also evident in the migraine severity (mean decrease: -2.14 in the
probiotic group and 0.11 in the placebo group; p < 0.001). Episodic migraineurs
who received the probiotic also showed significant reduction in abortive drug
usage per week (mean change: -0.72; p < 0.001) compare to baseline, while there
was no significant changes within the placebo group. In chronic migraine
patients, after an 8-week intervention, the mean frequency of migraine attacks
significantly reduced in the probiotic compared to the placebo group (mean
change: -9.67 vs. -0.22; p ≤ 0.001). In contrast to the placebo, probiotic
supplementation significantly decreased the severity (mean changes: -2.69;
p ≤ 0.001), duration (mean changes: -0.59; p ≤ 0.034) of attacks and the number
of abortive drugs taken per day (mean changes: -1.02; p < 0.001), in chronic
migraine patients." - [Nutra

Melatonin for Migraine
Headache Prophylaxis - Medscape, 4/30/18 - "Overall,
the evidence supporting melatonin for migraine prevention is promising but still
preliminary. Nonetheless, given the favorable tolerability and low risk for side
effects, melatonin is an option that may be worth considering for reducing
migraine frequency, severity, and duration in patients with frequent migraine
headaches" - See

Intranasal Oxytocin
Looks Promising for Migraine - Medscape, 7/3/13 -
"included 40 patients with chronic migraine who
received a dose of the agent and were asked to rate their pain, nausea,
photophobia, and phonophobia on a 4-point scale (indicating severe,
moderate, mild, or none) prior to and at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 24 hours ... At
from 2 to 4 hours, 64% of the patients who received the agent reported a
reduction in pain by 2 categories (either from "severe to mild or none," or
from "moderate to none") compared with only 27% of patients who received a
placebo"

Melatonin for Migraine?
- Medscape, 5/21/13 - "Participants were randomly
assigned to 3 mg of melatonin, 25 mg of amitriptyline, or placebo for 3
months ... The mean reduction in headache frequency was 2.7 in the melatonin
group, 2.18 in the amitriptyline group, and 1.18 in the placebo group. The
proportion of responders was greatest in the melatonin group at 54% vs 39%
for amitriptyline and 20% for placebo ... Patients gained weight in both the
amitriptyline and placebo groups, but melatonin was associated with weight
loss" - See

-
OTC Supplement
May Aid in Migraine Prevention - Medscape, 3/26/13 -
"3 mg of melatonin was more effective than placebo
and had efficacy similar to that of 25 mg of amitriptyline. Furthermore, it
was better tolerated than amitriptyline, with lower rates of daytime
sleepiness and no weight gain ... The mean reduction in headache frequency
was 2.7 in the melatonin group, 2.18 in the amitriptyline group, and 1.18 in
the placebo group ... Although patients gained weight in both the
amitriptyline (n = 3) and placebo (n = 1) groups, melatonin was associated
with weight loss ... melatonin should be taken between 10 pm and 11 pm to
mimic the physiologic peak. In addition, a fast-acting rather than a
slow-release formula should be used"

Vitamin D Deficiency and Chronic Migraine - Medscape, 7/7/08 -
"New research showing that vitamin D deficiency is
common in patients with chronic migraine suggests that this patient group,
like other vitamin D deficient populations, is at increased risk for
cardiovascular disease, malignancy, and other serious illnesses that have
been linked to low levels of this "good-health" vitamin ... 40.7% of
patients with chronic migraine were deficient in 25-hydroxyvitamin D. The
study also showed that the longer individuals had chronic migraine, the more
likely they were to be vitamin D deficient" - See

More Migraine Relief Seen with Over-the-Counter Combination than with
Sumatriptan - Doctor's Guide, 4/4/03 -
"Patients are more likely to get relief from a
migraine episode if they use an over-the-counter (OTC) treatment that
combines acetaminophen,
aspirin, and caffeine at the first sign of
an attack than if they use 50 mg of
sumatriptan (Imitrex)
... Among the OTC subjects, 87% had responded to treatment at 2 hours,
compared to 75% of sumatriptan subjects (P=0.045). The differences seen 24
hours after treatment showed that 66% of the OTC subjects had sustained
relief, compared to 49% of the sumatriptan group" - See

to do your own research. To me, this is saying that only 10% of doctors are
current on migraine treatments. Triptans have been out at least five years
