Probiotic identified to treat ulcers - Science Daily, 2/24/11 -
"H. pylori is considered one of the major risk
factors underlying the development of gastritis and gastric and duodenal
ulcers ... Currently, antibiotic-based treatment for H. pylori infection is
neither sufficient nor satisfactory, with the most successful treatments
reaching 75 to 90% eradication rates ... Among probiotics Bifidobacterium is
one of the favorite genera in studies focused on the prevention of
gastrointestinal infection and is often used in fermented dairy products or
food supplements ... They identified one strain (Bifidobacterium bifidum
CECT 7366) that under certain conditions had an inhibition level of nearly
95% in vitro and tested its activitity against infection in mi ... After 21
days, mice treated with the potentially probiotic strain developed
significantly less ulcers than the control group" - See

Effect
of resveratrol on helicobacter pylori-induced interleukin-8 secretion,
reactive oxygen species generation and morphological changes in human
gastric epithelial cells - Biol Pharm Bull. 2009 Nov;32(11):1931-5 -
"preincubation of the cells with 75 and 100 muM of
resveratrol significantly (p<0.05 and p<0.01 respectively) inhibited the
secretion of IL-8 from H. pylori-infected cells. In addition, resveratrol
pretreatment at 1-100 muM suppressed H. pylori-induced ROS generation in a
concentration dependent manner. Moreover, H. pylori-initiated morphological
changes were markedly blocked by resveratrol. Hence, resveratrol can be
considered as a potential candidate against various H. pylori related
gastric pathogenic processes" - See

Glutamine Supplements Show Promise In Treating Stomach Ulcers - Science
Daily, 5/15/09 - "the amino acid glutamine, found in
many foods as well as in dietary supplements, may prove beneficial in
offsetting gastric damage caused by H. pylori infection ... at
six-weeks-post infection, the animals exhibited increased expression of
three cytokines – interleukin 4, interleukin 10 and transforming growth
factor-alpha mRNA. "These all play an important role in the stomach's
ability to protect against damaging effects resulting from other responses
to H. pylori infection ... Of even greater significance, by week 20, the
study results showed that, among the H. pylori-infected animals, the mice
that were fed the L-glutamine diet exhibited lower levels of inflammation
than did the mice that received the standard control diet" - See
L-glutamine at Amazon.com.

New Yogurt Fights Stomach Ulcers - WebMD, 3/22/09 -
"H. pylori uses an enzyme called urease to attach to
and infect the inside of the stomach. This latest
yogurt, designed to fight stomach ulcers, contains an antibody called
IgY-urease. The yogurt is marketed as Dr. Piro in Japan and as Gut in Korea.
Researchers are hopeful that their clinical trial will pave the way for
approval in the United States ... For the trial, scientists recruited 42
people who tested positive for H. pylori. Some participants ate the yogurt
with the antibody three times a day for four weeks. Some participants ate
the same amount of regular yogurt that didn't contain the antibody. H.
pylori activity was significantly reduced in the antibody yogurt group"

Grape Extracts May Be Effective Against Harmful Gut Bacteria - Science
Daily, 3/4/09 - "H. pylori is the bacterial agent
most commonly associated with peptic ulcers, gastritis, mucosa-associated
lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and gastric cancer ... The antibacterial effects
of extracts from red, white, black and muscadine grapes as well as the pure
compounds resveratrol, ellagic acid, and myricetin were tested for anti-H.
pylori activity using agar dilution, laser scanning microscopy and cell
proliferation. Following 24 hour treatment, results showed that muscadine
grape skin extract had the highest anti-H. pylori effect, followed by
muscadine grape synergy and seed extract. Additionally, two of the three
compounds, resveratrol and ellagic acid, also inhibited H. pylori" -

Cyanocobalamin May be Beneficial in the Treatment of Recurrent Aphthous
Ulcers Even When Vitamin B12 Levels Are Normal - Am J Med Sci. 2008
Nov;336(5):379-382. - "recurrent aphthous ulcers
(RAUs) ... vitamin B12 (cobalamin) ... cobalamin normal group (CNG) ... A
significant increase in cobalamin levels was observed after cyanocobalamin
treatment in both groups. A significant decrease in aphthous ulcer frequency
was also concurrently observed. 96% of the patients showed good response to
replacement treatment, 4% of the study population did not respond to the
treatment ... Cyanocobalamin treatment maybe beneficial for patients with
RAU even when serum cobalamin levels are normal. We suggest that higher
serum cobalamin levels should be attained in patients with RAU for mucosal
protection" - See

prevent peptic ulcers and stomach cancer"

Infection - Doctor's Guide, 2/14/03 -
"Of 25 subjects with vitamin B >145-180 pg/mL, 92%
were seropositive ... Eighty-nine percent of the 47 subjects with vitamin B
greater than 180-250 pg/mL were found to be seropositive compared with 51%,
31 out of 61, of subjects with B less than 250 pg/mL"

Ulcer bacteria may contribute to development of Parkinson's disease -
Science Daily, 5/22/11 - "Infection of late
middle-aged mice with a particular strain of the bacteria Helicobacter
pylori results in development of Parkinson's disease symptoms after 3-5
months ... Our mouse model demonstrates a direct effect of H. pylori
infection on the development of Parkinson's disease. The observation that
not all H. pylori strains are equally able to cause symptoms will allow us
to investigate bacterial factors and/or immune response to H. pylori
infection that increase the risk for Parkinson's disease"
-
Helicobacter pylori infection linked to decreased iron levels in otherwise
healthy children - Science Daily, 3/7/11 - "Half
of the world's population is infected with H. pylori and most of the
individuals are asymptomatically infected ... Previous research has shown
that iron levels correlate with several body functions including brain
activity and have well documented long-term health consequences such as
increased morbidity and mortality and loss of productivity ... the infection
causes a decrease in the levels of iron in children who do not have anemia
or an iron deficiency. The bacterium H. pylori infects the lining of the
stomach resulting in chronic swelling of tissue, a condition known as
gastritis. H. pylori is also a major cause of peptic ulcer disease and the
cause of most cancers of the stomach ... Over time markers of iron stored in
the body increased in children no longer infected. However, children who
remained infected lagged in levels of one marker, serum ferritin, at their
six month follow-up. The protein serum ferritin measures the amount of iron
stored in your body"

association between ACE inhibitor use and peptic ulcer disease, with an odds
ratio of 0.68 ... The rate of peptic ulcer disease among ACE inhibitor users
was 12% vs 16% among nonusers"
