Inverse Association between
Serum Selenium Level and Severity of Liver Fibrosis: A Cross-Sectional Study
- Nutrients 2022 Sep 2 - "Selenium
has been well recognized for its important role in human health. Prior
studies showed that low serum selenium was associated with various diseases,
including cardiovascular disease, cancer, infertility, and cognitive
decline. Recent studies demonstrated an association between selenium
deficiency and liver cirrhosis ... There was a significant linear decrease
in liver stiffness measurement (LSM) values in male groups with increased
serum selenium levels. The beta coefficient (β) = -1.045 in male groups. A
significantly negative association was also observed in the group of age ≥
60. In addition, those in the highest quartile of serum selenium had lower
LSM values (β = -0.416). This is the first study using LSM to demonstrate
the correlation between selenium deficiency and severity of liver cirrhosis.
Our findings suggest that a high plasma selenium concentration is negatively
correlated with the severity of liver cirrhosis and there are gender and age
differences" - See se-methyl l-selenocysteine at Amazon.com.

Abnormal gut bugs tied to worse cognitive performance in vets with PTSD and
cirrhosis - Science Daily, 9/12/19 - "A study
involving military veterans with PTSD and cirrhosis of the liver points to
an abnormal mix of bacteria in the intestines as a possible driver of poor
cognitive performance -- and as a potential target for therapy ... the
findings add to the substantial evidence linking gut health and brain
function ... Those with PTSD had microbiota that were less diverse, meaning
they had fewer types of bacteria overall ... These veterans, along with the
relative lack of diversity in their gut, tended to have more potentially
harmful types of bacteria, such as Enterococcus and Escherichia/Shigella,
and fewer beneficial ones, such as Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae ...

- Coffee Consumption
and the Risk of Cirrhosis - Medscape, 3/24/16 -
"The pooled RR of cirrhosis for a daily increase in coffee consumption of
two cups was 0.56"
- Impact of Coffee on
Liver Diseases - Medscape, 8/14/14 - "Coffee
consumption was associated with improved serum gamma glutamyltransferase,
aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase values in a dose
dependent manner in individuals at risk for liver disease. In chronic liver
disease patients who consume coffee, a decreased risk of progression to
cirrhosis, a lowered mortality rate in cirrhosis patients, and a lowered
rate of HCC development were observed. In chronic hepatitis C patients,
coffee was associated with improved virologic responses to antiviral
therapy. Moreover, coffee consumption was inversely related to the severity
of steatohepatitis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Therefore, in patients with chronic liver disease, daily coffee consumption
should be encouraged"

Vitamin
D deficiency in cirrhosis - Science Daily, 3/15/11 -
"The study showed that vitamin D deficiency is more frequent and severe in
patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis than in patients with primary
biliary cirrhosis. Furthermore, it indicated that the degree of liver
dysfunction, rather than the aetiology of cirrhosis, dictates the risk of
vitamin D deficiency ... This study emphasizes the importance of monitoring
vitamin D levels in all patients with cirrhosis" - See

Vitamin D Deficiency Common In Patients With IBD, Chronic Liver Disease
- Science Daily, 10/13/08 - "analyzed
vitamin D
levels of 504
inflammatory bowel disease patients ...
almost 50 percent of the patients were Vitamin D deficient at some point,
with 11 percent being severely deficient ... 92.4 percent of
chronic liver patients
had some degree of vitamin D deficiency and at least one third were severely
deficient. Severe vitamin D deficiency was more common among cirrhotics"
