Recent Longevity News for the seven days ending 12/3/08. You should consult your doctor if you are taking any medications. Keep my Amazon.com link in mind for your Christmas shopping. I don't know why more don't order via them. I probably place and order per week. I just purchased HP Photosmart D7560 Printer through them. It was $104 delivered at Amazon.com. It was $150 plus tax at Staples. The last time I checked it was down to $72.18 delivered. This list price is $183. It prints in resolutions up to 9600 x 2400 dpi in full-color and it was the number one photo printer on 12/1/08.
Too Little Vitamin D Puts Heart at Risk - WebMD, 12/1/08 -
"people with low vitamin D
levels were twice as likely to have a
heart attack, stroke, or other heart-related
event during follow-up, compared with those with higher vitamin D levels ...
Sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 blocks approximately 99% of
vitamin D synthesis by the skin ... The safe upper limit of vitamin D
consumption is 10,000 IU per day ... Vitamin D supplements are available in two
different forms: Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3. Although both appear effective in
raising vitamin D blood levels, Vitamin D3 supplements appear to result in a
longer-lasting boost" - See
vitamin D at Amazon.com Symptoms Of Depression Associated With Increase In Abdominal Fat - Science Daily, 12/1/08 - "There are several mechanisms by which depression might increase abdominal fat, they note. Chronic stress and depression may activate certain brain areas and lead to increased levels of the hormone cortisol, which promotes the accumulation of visceral fat. Individuals with depression may have unhealthier lifestyles, including a poor diet, that could interact with other physiological factors to produce an increase in abdominal obesity" - See my cortisol page for ways to reduce it. Cortisol is like the chicken and the egg with depression. They don't seem to know whether it is the cause or result. Diabetes Medications In Same Class Carry Different Risks Of Heart Failure, Death - Science Daily, 12/1/08 - "individuals taking rosiglitazone had a 15 percent higher rate of death and a 13 percent greater risk of heart failure compared with those taking pioglitazone"
Garlic and onions may reduce cholesterol gallstones: Study - Nutra USA,
11/27/08 - "Mice were divided into groups – one group
was fed the lithogenic diet, and the others fed the lithogenic diet supplemented
with 0.6 and 2.0 per cent garlic and onion,
respectively ... The incidence of gallstones
in the latter group was found to be reduced by 15 to 30 per cent" - [Abstract]

They found that production of neural stem cells improved by approximately 200% compared to the middle-aged mice that did not exercise. In addition, the survival of new nerve cells increased by 170% and growth by 190% compared to the sedentary middle-aged mice. Exercise also significantly enhanced stem cell production and maturation in the young mice. In fact, exercise produced a stronger effect in younger mice compared to the older mice"
Scientists Find
a Possible Cause of Aging - NYTimes.com, 11/26/08 -
"A new insight into the reason for aging has been gained by scientists trying to
understand how resveratrol, a minor
ingredient of red wine, improves the health and lifespan of laboratory mice.
They believe that the integrity of chromosomes is compromised as people age, and
that resveratrol works by activating a protein known as sirtuin that restores
the chromosomes to health ... Dr. Sinclair has been taking large daily doses of
resveratrol since he and others discovered five years ago that it activated
sirtuin. “I’m still taking it and I feel great,” he said, “but it’s too early to
say if I’m young for my age."" - See

Such a function is ideal for tuning neuronal populations to global activity. On the other hand, too much nitric oxide is extremely toxic and will cause death of nerve cells; so within the kernel of this important signaling mechanism are the potential seeds for neurodegeneration, which if left unchecked contribute to the pathologies of stroke and dementias"
Vitamin
K Linked To Insulin Resistance In Older Men - Science Daily, 11/26/08 -
"Vitamin K slowed the
development of insulin resistance in elderly
men in a study of 355 non-diabetic men and women ages 60 to 80 who completed a
three-year clinical trial at the Jean Mayer Human Nutrition Research Center on
Aging at Tufts University" - See

See Phosphorus, Phosphate. I just looked at my value and it was in the lower third of normal even though I drink two mini-cans of Pepsi every day. High Blood Pressure In The Doctor's Office May Not Predict Heart Risks - Science Daily, 11/26/08 - "Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, or measuring blood pressure at regular intervals throughout the day, is increasingly important in managing patients with this condition because of the possibility of a white-coat effect (when an individual only has high blood pressure at the physician's office)" - See Omron HEM-712C Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with IntelliSense. I preferred this one of the more expensive models from the same company because I hated the so called "Comfit cuff" plus I doubt if anyone uses the computer options or the ridiculous memory of past readings.

"The extracts showed a good antibacterial activity, as
evidence by the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the test compound
against the two strains" - See

In summary, elevated circulating adiponectin was associated with lower bone mass and weaker bones in growing mice compared to control animals" - See my adiponectin page for ways to increase it. - Ben Abstracts from this week's Doctor's Guide Nutrition/Dietetics plus abstracts from my RSS feeds (Click here for the journals, the PubMed ones at the top): Dietary intakes of omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and the risk of breast cancer - Int J Cancer. 2008 Sep 9 - "Breast cancer risk was not related to any dietary PUFA overall; however, opposite associations were seen according to food sources, suggesting other potential effects than PUFA per se. Breast cancer risk was inversely associated with alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) intake from fruit and vegetables [highest vs. lowest quintile, hazard ratio (HR) 0.74; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.63, 0.88; p trend < 0.0001], and from vegetable oils (HR 0.83; 95% CI 0.71, 0.97; p trend 0.017). Conversely, breast cancer risk was positively related to ALA intake from nut mixes (p trend 0.004) and processed foods (p trend 0.068), as was total ALA intake among women in the highest quintile of dietary vitamin E (p trend 0.036). A significant interaction was also found between omega-6 and long-chain omega-3 PUFAs, with breast cancer risk inversely related to long-chain omega-3 PUFAs in women belonging to the highest quintile of omega-6 PUFAs (p interaction 0.042). These results emphasize the need to consider food sources, as well as interactions between fatty acids and with antioxidants, when evaluating associations between PUFA intakes and breast cancer risk" - Note: Alpha-linolenic acid is the vegetable form of omega-3.
Dietary garlic and onion reduce the incidence of atherogenic diet-induced
cholesterol gallstones in experimental mice - Br J Nutr. 2008 Nov 5:1-9 -
"Dietary garlic and onion
markedly reduced biliary cholesterol ... Serum and liver cholesterol were
decreased by feeding garlic or onion compared to the LG diet. Thus, dietary
Allium spices exerted antilithogenic influence by decreasing the cholesterol
hyper-secretion into bile and increasing the bile acid output thus decreasing
the formation of lithogenic bile in experimental mice" - See

Effects of
ethyl-eicosapentaenoic acid omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on hot flashes
and quality of life among middle-aged women: a double-blind, placebo-controlled,
randomized clinical trial - Menopause. 2008 Nov 20 -
"At baseline, the average number of HFs was
2.8 per day. After 8 weeks, HF frequency and score decreased significantly in
the E-EPA group compared with the placebo
group. There was no difference in the change in HF intensity between groups.
Frequency of HFs declined by a mean of 1.58 per day (95% CI, -2.18 to -0.98) in
the E-EPA group and by 0.50 per day (95% CI, -1.20 to 0.20) in the placebo
group. The odds of being a responder among those taking E-EPA were about three
times greater than among those taking placebo (odds ratio, 2.70; 95% CI,
1.03-7.03; P = 0.04). Menopause-Specific Quality of Life scores improved
significantly over time in both groups but no significant differences were noted
between them"

Vitamin C:
Is Supplementation Necessary for Optimal Health? - J Altern Complement Med.
2008 Nov 25 - "Consumption of vitamin C is essential for
life in humans because the body does not synthesize it. Numerous studies have
demonstrated that supplementation with vitamin C enhances the immune system,
avoids DNA damage, and significantly decreases the risk of a wide range of
pathologies, such as cancers, and degenerative and chronic diseases. Moreover,
it has been demonstrated that modern crop production, transport, and food
storage severely impair the quality of food and provoke a loss in
micronutrients, such as vitamin C ... In this paper, we report that the
Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) in vitamin C is lower than the bodily needs.
In fact, it does not seem to ensure true health protection and it appears
difficult to reach an effective dose of vitamin C only through food consumption.
Furthermore, the literature shows that vitamin C intake higher than the RDA is
safe. Therefore, in order to achieve optimal health and avoid a number of
diseases, we suggest that, in the present situation, vitamin C supplementation
is required ... According to the current literature, we would like to emphasize
that to ensure an optimal allowance of vitamin C, we advise 1 g daily intake of
vitamin C supplementation, accompanied by a diet rich in fruits and vegetables"

Testosterone administration resulted in a profound decline in CRP levels and AMS scores" Caffeinated Coffee Consumption, Cardiovascular Disease, and Heart Valve Disease in the Elderly (from the Framingham Study) - Am J Cardiol. 2008 Dec 1;102(11):1502-8. Epub 2008 Sep 11 - "A significant negative association between caffeinated coffee consumption and CHD mortality was observed for subjects with systolic blood pressure (BP) <160 mm Hg and diastolic BP <100 mm Hg. The decrease in risk of CHD mortality for any caffeinated coffee versus none was 43% (95% confidence interval 9 to 64). This decreased risk appeared to be caused primarily by an inverse prospective relation between caffeinated coffee consumption and the development or progression of heart valve disease. The decrease in risk of heart valve disease for subjects with systolic BP <160 mm Hg and diastolic BP <100 mm Hg for any caffeinated coffee versus none was 43%"
