Recent Longevity News for the seven days ending 3/26/03:

Vitamin K and niacin good for complexion, experts say - HealthScout News, 3/26/03 - "Vitamin K was found to be successful in treating dark circles under the eyes. It's also been found effective for treating bruising on the face following dermatologic procedures such as laser treatment for spider veins ... Niacin shows promise as an over-the-counter ingredient in anti-aging products" - Inositol hexanicotinate (no-flush niacin) may also raise HDL (the good cholesterol).

Vitamin C Reduces Oxidant Stress In Renal Failure - Doctor's Guide, 3/26/03 - "The acute administration of vitamin C reduces oxidant stress in renal failure, and improves nitric oxide-mediated resistance-vessel dilatation ... In addition, vitamin C was found to increase the dilator response to acetylcholine in resistance vessels"

Vitamins May Slow Down Alzheimer's - HealthScout News, 3/26/03 - "high-dose vitamins reduce levels of the amino acid homocysteine in people with Alzheimer's. Previous research has found a link between homocysteine and the mind-robbing disease ... The Georgetown University researchers are now leading a 40-center therapeutic trial to determine whether three common vitamins -- folic acid, B12 and B6 -- can decelerate Alzheimer's"

Low Blood Lead Levels Associated With Hypertension In Middle-Aged Women - Doctor's Guide, 3/26/03 - "From a public health prospective, the most important and troubling implication of these findings is that lead appears to increase blood pressure in women at very small increments above 1.0 (mu)g/dL, well below what is considered deleterious in adults"

Efficacy and Safety of Ephedra and Ephedrine for Weight Loss and Athletic Performance - JAMA, 3/26/03 - "Ephedrine and ephedra promote modest short-term weight loss (0.9 kg/mo more than placebo) in clinical trials. There are no data regarding long-term weight loss, and evidence to support use of ephedra for athletic performance is insufficient. Use of ephedra or ephedrine and caffeine is associated with increased risk of psychiatric, autonomic, or gastrointestinal symptoms, and heart palpitations"

Boosting Bone Mineral Density Without Hormones - WebMD, 3/25/03 - "experts urge women who discontinued their hormones to get a bone mineral density test and discuss new treatments for osteoporosis with their doctor ... The statistics are staggering. One in two postmenopausal women has osteoporosis, 25% will sufferer a spine fracture, and 15% will sustain a hip fracture as a result ... Depending on the results of the test, your doctor can prescribe one of several drugs including Fosamax, Actonel, Evista, the nasal spray Miacalcin, and the newest drug on the block, Forteo, an injectable form of human parathyroid hormone" - Yeah, but also in this week's news:

Low Testosterone Affects Many Men With Coronary Disease - Medscape, 3/25/03 - "Around 50% of men with coronary heart disease have low levels of testosterone that could have contributed to the development of the disease ... Previous research has linked low testosterone levels to dyslipidemia, hypertension, insulin resistance, obesity and a prothrombotic state, but the scale of the problem has not been established ... A lot of these men should be on testosterone replacement ... hormone replacement therapy for men is "isn't very widespread at the moment," although that seems to be changing" - From my own experience and the experience of others I've talked to, asking for a prescription for testosterone gets a response like you're asking for cocaine.  I feel that attitude needs to change. - Ben

Melatonin May Protect Brain After Stroke: Rat Study - Yahoo, 3/25/03 - "Rats who received a dose of melatonin within two hours of a stroke experienced less tissue damage than rats who either received melatonin later or not at all ... Much of the damage inflicted by stroke results from an overproduction of free radicals, particles that can inflict serious tissue damage ...Melatonin is a potent scavenger of free radicals" - See iHerb (5% discount code "qc") or Vitacosticon melatonin products.

Tazarotene Cream Superior to Tretinoin in Treating Photodamaged Skin - Doctor's Guide, 3/25/03 - "tazarotene is significantly superior to tretinoin emollient in mean global responses, overall assessment of photodamage, and fine wrinkling"

Vitamin A still best wrinkle fighter - MSNBC, 3/24/03 - "Cosmetic companies have touted vitamin-based face creams for more than 40 years, but prescription-only treatments containing vitamin A are still the only scientifically-proven wrinkle fighters ... I highly advise everybody to start retinoids today and stay on them,” Dr. Leslie Baumann, professor of dermatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine ... Tarzarotene is more potent that Renova, especially for crow’s feet, fine lines and discoloration ... Niacin, or vitamin B-3, is needed to repair DNA damage caused by ultraviolet exposure and derivatives of the vitamin may help the skin retain moisture" - See online prescriptions.

Cranberry Juice Fights Heart Disease - WebMD, 3/24/03 - "Cranberry juice is higher in phenol antioxidants than other fruit juices with the exception of grape juice ... levels of high-density lipoprotein ("good" cholesterol) appeared to increase significantly -- by as much as 121% -- after two or three glasses of juice a day"

Echinacea and Truth in Labeling - Archives of Internal Medicine, 3/24/03 - "Of the samples, 6 (10%) of 59 preparations contained no measurable Echinacea. The assayed species content was consistent with labeled content in 31 (52%) of the samples. Of the 21 standardized preparations, 9 (43%) met the quality standard described on the label. Labeled milligrams were weakly associated with measured constituent" - That's probably one reasons for conflicting studies on echinacea. - Ben

Knowing Your Blood Pressure Could Help Save Your Life - WebMD, 3/24/03 - "30% of those with systolic readings of 140 mm Hg or higher did not understand that they had high blood pressure. And three-quarters of the respondents believed that their diastolic reading was the most significant number ... patients are not the only ones to underestimate the importance of high blood pressure. Many doctors, he says, are still reluctant to put older patients with moderately elevated systolic pressure on medication because they often complain of feeling weak or dizzy at the goal of 140 mm Hg. In the telephone survey, 40% of patients said their doctors did not recommend treatment unless systolic blood pressure was higher than 160 mm Hg"

High Blood Pressure Can Go to Your Head - HealthScout News, 3/24/03 - "This is one report that adds to the number of studies telling us that high blood pressure increases the loss of brain cells ... Cholesterol makes a big difference to the blood vessels of the heart, but the vessels of the brain are extremely sensitive to blood pressure" - See my section on memory and hypertension.  See "Alternative News" on my cholesterol page and hypertension page for ways to reduce them.  For example:

High Blood Pressure Causes More Eye Damage in Blacks Than Whites - WebMD, 3/24/03 - "In it, authors detail their investigation of retinopathy -- damage to small blood vessels in the retina, which causes vision loss and is one of the most easily detectable signs of damage caused by high blood pressure" - Most people probably aren't away that eye damage is among the log list of problems caused my hypertension. Here's another:

Protecting Your Kidneys from 2 Potential Killers - HealthScout News, 3/21/03 - "high blood pressure and diabetes are two of the most important causes of kidney disease ... In high blood pressure, the vessels get thicker, including those in the kidney, and then they don't work as well ... Diabetics can have unused glucose in the blood, and this can cause damage to the nephrons, the functioning unit of the kidney ... The dangerous thing about kidney disease is that it often doesn't produce any signs or symptoms ... All you need are three simple tests: a measurement of your blood pressure, a urine test for protein [excess indicates a problem], and a blood test for creatinine. If creatinine is elevated, it means your kidneys are not working properly"

Cholesterol Metabolism May Provide Alzheimer’s Clue - Psychiatric Times, 3/21/03 - "The CYP46 enzyme regulates levels of brain cholesterol ... a change of just one base in the CYP46 gene from cytosine (C) to thymine (T)—leads to a decrease in functioning of CYP46, causing cholesterol levels in the brain and cerebrospinal fluid to reach higher-than-normal levels ... other research has shown that depletion of brain cholesterol leads to a reduction in Aß ... The results, he wrote, "suggest the possibility that LOAD [late onset Alzheimer's disease], the most common degenerative disease of the brain, is a general end point for abnormalities that increase the amount of cholesterol in the central nervous system. If so, inhibiting cholesterol metabolism in the brain might represent a viable treatment for LOAD.""

Acetyl-L-Carnitine: Does it offer any benefit as a supplement? - Dr. Cooper's Wellness Insider Newsletter, 3/03 - "These studies were usually three to six months in length and oral dosages ranged from one to three grams per day. Although results varied, improvements were generally noted in spatial learning tasks, timed tasks of attention, discrimination-learning tasks, and tasks of personal recognition ... In a two-month study of 24 depressed elderly patients, it was demonstrated that ALC treatment was highly effective, particularly in patients with more serious depressive symptoms 13. In another study of 28 elderly patients, 500 mg of ALC three times per day was effective in counteracting symptoms of depression 14. Patients in both studies had decreased scores when evaluated using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, showing an improvement in depressive symptoms" - See iHerb (5% discount code "qc") or Vitacosticon ALC products.

Hiccups, Tips for stemming the spasms - HealthScout News, 3/21/03 - "According to the University of Michigan, one study found that a teaspoon of ordinary table sugar, swallowed dry, cured hiccups in 19 out of 20 people"

Aspirin May Have Role in Cancer Fight - ABC News, 3/21/03 - "Daily aspirin, taken for up to three years, reduced the development of polyps by 19 percent ... There are at least two forms of that enzyme, COX-1 and COX-2. COX-2 is believed to be the culprit in inflammation, which is why aspirin and aspirin-like drugs, like ibuprofen, have become popular anti-inflammatory medications. COX-2 also plays a role in cancer development ... they took patients with very advanced cancer, essentially patients that were at the end of their therapeutic options, and the question was, can we improve their life by giving them indomethacin, an aspirin-like drug, versus placebo? So they were focused on things like quality of life and pain and ability to maintain weight with these very advanced cancer patients, and what they demonstrated was significant reductions in pain, improvements in terms of maintaining their weight, but also, very surprisingly, a doubling of their average survival, which is really a very striking finding" - See drugstore.com aspirinicon products.

Baboons Give Clues to Obesity, Diabetes in Humans - HealthScout News, 3/20/03 - "Research with wild baboons indicates that lack of exercise, not poor diet, causes obesity and diabetes in people who are predisposed to the conditions"

Supplements That Increase The Effects Of Resistance Exercise Identified - Intelihealth, 3/19/03 - "of the more than 250 dietary products available, only HMB and creatine supplements have sufficient scientific evidence showing that lean body mass and strength gains accompanying resistance training are augmented with their use" - See iHerb (5% discount code "qc") or Vitacosticon HMB products.

Exercise Training, Without Weight Loss, Increases Insulin Sensitivity and Postheparin Plasma Lipase Activity in Previously Sedentary Adults - Medscape, 3/19/03 - "Exercise, without weight loss, increases SI [insulin sensitivity] and PHPL activity in previously sedentary adults, without changing K2 or fasting lipid levels. Furthermore, increased LPL is associated with a decreased total:HDL ratio, and an increased LPL:HL ratio is associated with a decreased waist circumference. Therefore, even modest amounts of exercise in the absence of weight loss positively affect markers of glucose and fat metabolism in previously sedentary, middle-aged adults" - I threw this out because I didn't know that "decreased total:HDL ratio ... is associated with a decreased waist circumference".  This might be a long shot but that sounds like increasing insulin sensitivity via such methods as metformin and increasing HDL via supplements such as inositol hexanicotinate-no-flush niacin might decrease pot bellies. - Ben
