Recent Longevity News for the week ending 7/27/22

Hair Loss, Impotence Join List of Long COVID Symptoms - WebMD, 7/25/22 - "Looking at only non-hospitalized patients, researchers identified three categories of distinct symptoms reported by people with persistent health problems after infection ... Patterns of symptoms tended to be grouped mainly as respiratory or brain symptoms, alongside a third category representing a broader range of health problems, including hair loss and erectile dysfunction ... The most common symptoms include loss of smell, shortness of breath, chest pain and fever" - Note: Just one more thing for the anti-vaxxers to think about.

New study finds lowest risk of death was among adults who exercised 150-600 minutes/week - Science Daily, 7/25/22 - "An analysis of physical activity and medical records for more than 100,000 people over 30 years found that individuals who performed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' currently recommended range of duration of moderate (150-300 minutes/week) or vigorous physical activity (75-150 minutes/week), respectively, had an observed 20-21% and 19% lower risk of mortality from all causes. Individuals who performed two to four times the amount of recommended physical activity (150-600 minutes/week) were observed to have further reductions in mortality from all causes"

3 Reasons to Avoid Farmed Salmon - Time, 7/21/22 - "This new fish is an industrialized imposter that risks our health and damages our planet. Farmed salmon are bred to grow fast in cages so crammed that they are rife with parasites and disease. The fish eat pellets of fishmeal, vegetables, and animal byproducts; they are doused regularly with pesticides and antibiotics"

Is Copper Culpable in Parkinson's Disease? - Medscape, 7/21/22 - "Substantially more cell biology and in vivo modeling would be needed to further evaluate the connection of copper specifically to synucleinopathy"

Depression is likely not caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, study says - Hill, 7/21/22 - "It is always difficult to prove a negative, but I think we can safely say that after a vast amount of research conducted over several decades, there is no convincing evidence that depression is caused by serotonin abnormalities, particularly by lower levels or reduced activity of serotonin ... Researchers also looked at studies where serotonin levels were artificially lowered in hundreds of participants by omitting the amino acid required to make serotonin from their diets. The review found lowering serotonin artificially did not produce depression in the study volunteers"

Marijuana use is much more common in US states that have legalized recreational cannabis use - Science Daily, 7/19/22 - "the rates of cannabis use and daily cannabis use have increased across the U.S., and that current cannabis use and daily use are substantially higher among individuals residing in states that have legalized recreational cannabis use, relative to those where cannabis use remains illegal. The study also found that rates of cannabis use are even higher among Americans 12 and older who smoke cigarettes, and who reside in states with recreational cannabis laws, compared to those who live in states where cannabis was illegal in 2017 ... It remains to be seen how increased lawful accessi and growing use of cannabis among adults in all states -- almost regardless of legal status -- will impact the adolescent population. Recent trends, however, outline a potential explosion in both of-age and under-age use ... among adolescents ages 12-17 who used cigarettes daily, the majority (73 percent) had used cannabis in the past month and almost one in three (30 percent) used cannabis daily. Among adolescents who did not smoke cigarettes, 5 percent used cannabis in the past month and one percent used cannabis daily"

Rosuvastatin Again Linked With Risks to Kidneys - Medscape, 7/20/22 - "The most potent statin on the market, rosuvastatin has been linked with excess risk for kidney damage compared with atorvastatin in case reports and small trials, but there has been little surveillance of the issue following its approval in 2003 ... Users of rosuvastatin had an 8% higher risk for hematuria, a 17% higher risk for proteinuria, and a 15% higher risk for kidney failure with replacement therapy compared with those on atorvastatin" -

Vitamin B6 supplements could reduce anxiety and depression - Science Daily, 7/19/22 - "Vitamin B6 helps the body produce a specific chemical messenger that inhibits impulses in the brain, and our study links this calming effect with reduced anxiety among the participants ... The new study focused on the potential role of Vitamins B6, which is known to increase the body's production of GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid), a chemical that blocks impulses between nerve cells in the brain ... more than 300 participants were randomly assigned either Vitamin B6 or B12 supplements far above the recommended daily intake (approximately 50 times the recommended daily allowance) or a placebo, and took one a day with food for a month ... The study showed that Vitamin B12 had little effect compared to placebo over the trial period, but Vitamin B6 made a statistically reliable difference" - See vitamin B6 at Amazon.com.

Where Pot Became Legal, Car Crash Deaths Rose - WebMD, 7/19/22 - "after marijuana legalization, the rate of car crashes with injuries increased by nearly 6%, while fatal crashes rose by 4%. No increase in these crashes was seen in states that hadn't legalized marijuana"

Marijuana use is much more common in US states that have legalized recreational cannabis use -Science Daily, 7/19/22 - "the rates of cannabis use and daily cannabis use have increased across the U.S., and that current cannabis use and daily use are substantially higher among individuals residing in states that have legalized recreational cannabis use, relative to those where cannabis use remains illegal. The study also found that rates of cannabis use are even higher among Americans 12 and older who smoke cigarettes, and who reside in states with recreational cannabis laws, compared to those who live in states where cannabis was illegal in 2017"

Regular coffee drinkers had lower chance of dying in 7-year period - Washington Post, 7/19/22 - "those who regularly drank 1½ to 3½ cups of coffee a day, whether plain or sweetened with about a teaspoon of sugar, were up to 30 percent less likely to die in that time frame from any cause, including cancer and cardiovascular disease, than were those who did not drink coffee"

The reason I keep plugging the Touch is that's it's the only one that's reasonably price that dispenses the water at the optimum 205 degrees. The other's don't even come close at around 170 degrees which is why their coffee tastes like piss.
These hold 20 oz. (three cups of coffee) and fit in a Tesla console cup holder.  Great for something like a day at Yosemite. You might need two though.

Abstracts from this week:

Simvastatin in the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer: A Review - Evid Based Complement Alternat Med 2022 Jul 14 - "Simvastatin is a clinically commonly used hyperlipidemia drug and exerts the effect of preventing cardiovascular diseases. Recent studies have found that simvastatin has great potential in the treatment of colorectal cancer, and a large number of clinical studies have used simvastatin as an adjuvant drug to help treat metastatic colorectal cancer" - See simvastatin at ReliableRXPharmacy.

Role of Serum Creatinine Levels in Prognostic Risk Stratification of Prostate Cancer Patients - Med Sci Monit 2022 Jul 22 - "Serum creatinine level was an independent predictor of high-risk prognosis. Controlling serum creatinine levels between 70.1 and 76.8 umol/L in patients with prostatic cancer may benefit the prognosis of patients with prostatic cancer"

Long-term caloric restriction ameliorates T cell immunosenescence in mice - Mech Ageing Dev. 2022 Jul 19 - "Aging is associated with a decrease in the function of the immune system, a phenomenon known as immunosenescence, which results in reduced resistance to infection. Caloric restriction (CR) is known to prolong lifespan and to regulate immune function ... Compared with a normal diet or short-term CR, long-term CR induced marked or complete attenuation of age-related decreases in the frequency of spleen NK cells and NKT cells; naïve CD4+ and CD8+ T cells; and cytokine- and granzyme B-secreting T cells. In contrast, both long- and short-term CR significantly suppressed age-related upregulation of the T cell exhaustion markers PD-1, Tim-3, and KLRG1, as well as the transcription factors NR4A1 and TOX, which regulate the expression of genes associated with the T cell exhaustion phenotype. These results suggest that CR might suppress age-associated immunosenescence by regulating the expression of transcription factors and target genes that control T cell exhaustion"

Metformin mitigates stress-induced premature senescence by upregulating AMPKα at Ser485 phosphorylation induced SIRT3 expression and inactivating mitochondrial oxidants - Mech Ageing Dev 2022 Jul 18 - "The senescence of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is an important cause of cardiovascular disease such as atherosclerosis and hypertension. These senescence may be triggered by many factors, such as oxidative stress, inflammation, DNA damage, and senescence-associated secretory phenotypes (SASPs). Mitochondrial oxidative stress induces cellular senescence, but the mechanisms by which mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) regulates cellular senescence are still largely unknown ... This study provides mechanistic evidence that metformin acts as an anti-aging agent and alleviates VSMC senescence by upregulating mitochondrial antioxidant induced p-AMPK (Ser485)-dependent SIRT3 expression, which suggests metformin has therapeutic potential for the treatment of age-associated vascular disease" - See metformin at ReliableRX.

Effects of probiotic supplementation on glucose metabolism in pregnant women without diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis - Food Funct 2022 Jul 19 - "Overall, probiotic supplementation significantly reduced GDM incidence (Risk Ratio (RR) = 0.62 ... This meta-analysis suggested that probiotic supplementation may lead to an improvement in glycemic control and reduction of GDM incidence in pregnant women" - See probiotic supplements at Amazon.com.

Self-Reported and Physiologic Reactions to Third BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 (Booster) Vaccine Dose - Emerg Infect Dis 2022 Jul;28( - "The extent of systemic reactions reported after the booster dose was similar to that of the second dose and considerably greater than that of the first dose. Analyses of objective heart rate and heart rate variability measures recorded by smartwatches further supported this finding"

Protective effect of Astragalus membranaceus and Astragaloside IV in sepsis-induced acute kidney injury - Aging (Albany NY) 2022 Jul 20 - "Acute kidney injury (AKI) is the most common target organ damage in sepsis. Sepsis-associated AKI (SA-AKI) may be characterized by damage to the renal tubular epithelium ... Astragalus membranaceus and AS-IV protect against sepsis-induced kidney tubular injury by activating the PI3K/AKT pathway" - See astragalus at Amazon.com.

Evaluation of the efficacy of oral nano-silymarin formulation in hospitalized patients with COVID-19: A double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial - Phytother Res 2022 Jul 20 - "the alanine aminotransferase level decreased significantly in the treatment group, compared to the placebo group" - See silymarin at Amazon.com.

High-dose Vitamin B6 supplementation reduces anxiety and strengthens visual surround suppression - Hum Psychopharmacol 2022 Jul 19 - "Vitamins B6 and B12 are involved in metabolic processes that decrease neural excitation and increase inhibition ... Vitamin B6 supplementation reduced self-reported anxiety and induced a trend towards reduced depression, as well as increased surround suppression of visual contrast detection, but did not reliably influence the other outcome measures. Vitamin B12 supplementation produced trends towards changes in anxiety and visual processing ... Conclusions: Our results suggest that high-dose Vitamin B6 supplementation increases inhibitory GABAergic neural influences, which is consistent with its known role in the synthesis of GABA" - See vitamin B6 at Amazon.com.

Intermittent Fasting is Associated with a Decreased Risk of Age-related Macular Degeneration: Intermittent fasting and age-related macular degeneration - Am J Ophthalmol 2022 Jul 6 - "The intermittent fasting group had a decreased risk of AMD compared to the non-fasting group (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.413... Using the population-based survey data, we demonstrated that intermittent fasting by skipping breakfast was significantly associated with a reduced risk of AMD in a representative elderly population, especially in individuals with age less than 70 years, obesity, and urban residence"

Another example where the AMA is wrong that supplements aren’t necessary. My SBHG was in the stratosphere and that’s not good for a lot of reasons. The medical community doesn’t even have a medicine for it except danazol, which causes benign liver cysts in doses that will do anything. I brought my SBHG down from 135 to 39 will just supplements (normal, 19 – 76). See my formula at: https://qualitycounts.com/fpshbg.htm

When it was in the stratosphere, I talked to four endocrinologists. They were all brain-dead in that area.
