Tea Extract Shows Promise In Leukemia Trials - Science Daily, 5/26/09 -
"We found not only that patients tolerated the
green tea extract at very high doses, but that
many of them saw regression to some degree of their
chronic lymphocytic leukemia ... majority of individuals who entered the
study with enlarged lymph nodes saw a 50 percent or greater decline in their
lymph node size" - See

In Turmeric Spice May Stall Spread Of Fat Tissue - Science Daily, 5/22/09 -
"supplementing the animals’ high-fat diet with
curcumin reduced
body-weight gain and total body fat, even
though food-intake was not affected, when compared to the nonsupplemented
high-fat-diet group ... The curcumin-treated group also had less blood vessel
growth in fat tissue. Blood glucose, triglyceride, fatty acid, cholesterol and
liver fat levels also were lower" - See

Model Of Cancer Development: Low Vitamin D Levels May Have Role - Science
Daily, 5/22/09 - "previous theories linking
vitamin D to certain cancers have been tested
and confirmed in more than 200 epidemiological studies, and understanding of its
physiological basis stems from more than 2,500 laboratory studies ... Vitamin D
may halt the first stage of the cancer process by
re-establishing intercellular junctions in malignancies having an intact vitamin
D receptor ... Vitamin D levels can be increased by modest supplementation with
vitamin D3 in the range of 2000 IU/day" - See

Back pain at rest was reduced 97% in the comfrey root group and 40% in the placebo group. The comfrey root ointment seemed to take effect in less than an hour" - See comfrey root products at iHerb.

Vitamin
D Insufficiency Linked To Bacterial Vaginosis In Pregnant Women - Science
Daily, 5/21/09 - "Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most
common vaginal infection in US women of childbearing age, and is common in
pregnant women. BV occurs when the normal
balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of
certain bacteria ... Overall, women with BV had lower
serum 25(OH)D concentrations than those without
BV (P < 0.01). The prevalence of BV decreased as vitamin D concentration
increased to 80 nmol/L (P < 0.001). Compared with 75 nmol/L, serum 25(OH)D
concentrations of 20 nmol/L and 50 nmol/L were associated with 65% and 26%
increases, respectively, in the likelihood of BV. In summary, these findings
suggest that vitamin D insufficiency is associated with BV in the first 4 mo of
pregnancy. Further, poor vitamin D status may contribute to the strong racial
disparity in the prevalence of BV in US women" - See

Review supports vitamin K's fracture reducing power - Nutra USA, 5/20/09 -
"The most important findings in this review are that
although supplementation with lower doses of
vitamin K may be sufficient to reduce serum ucOC levels, supplementation
with higher doses may be required for optimal
bone health" - [Abstract]

Vitamin
D May Halt Lung Function Decline In Asthma And COPD - Science Daily, 5/20/09
- "Dr. Damera and his colleagues found
calcitriol
inhibits HASM in a dose-dependent manner, with a maximum inhibitory effect of 60
percent +/- 3 percent at 100nM" - See
vitamin D at Amazon.com Blood-pressure-lowering Drugs Should Not Be Limited To People With High Blood Pressure - Science Daily, 5/19/09 - "Blood pressure lowering drugs should be offered to anyone old enough to be at risk of a heart attack or stroke (or who is otherwise known to be at risk), regardless of their blood pressure ... using any one of the main classes of blood pressure lowering drugs at standard dose reduced fatal and non-fatal heart attacks by about a quarter and stroke by about a third. Heart failure was also reduced by about a quarter. The reductions in disease were similar in people with and without clinical cardiovascular disease and regardless of blood pressure before treatment ... three drugs together, each at low dose to minimize side effects, could increase the preventive effect, reducing heart attacks by about 45% and stroke by about 60%" Abstracts from this week's Doctor's Guide Nutrition/Dietetics plus abstracts from my RSS feeds (Click here for the journals, the PubMed ones at the top):
Plasma n-3
polyunsaturated fatty acids are negatively associated with obesity - Br J
Nutr. 2009 May 19:1-5 - "Plasma fatty acid composition
was determined by GC. BMI, waist circumference
and hip circumference were inversely correlated with
n-3 PUFA, EPA and DHA
(P < 0.05 for all) in the obese group. Obese individuals had significantly lower
plasma concentrations of total n-3 PUFA, compared with healthy-weight
individuals (4.53 (sd 1.11) v. 5.25 (sd 1.43) %)"

women: a review of the literature - Nutr Res. 2009 Apr;29(4):221-8 -
"randomized controlled trials (RCTs) ... The review of
the reliable literature confirmed the effect of
vitamin K(1) and vitamin K(2) supplementation on the skeleton of
postmenopausal women mediated by mechanisms other than
bone mineral density and bone turnover"
