Recent Longevity News for the seven days ending 1/30/02:
CoQ10 Lowers Blood Pressure - Delicious! Online, 1/02 -
"59 men with
hypertension were
randomized to receive 120 mg per day
CoQ10 or placebo. Both
systolic and diastolic pressure decreased significantly in the CoQ10 group—an
average of 16 and 9 points, respectively—while the placebo group saw no change
... The researchers also measured glucose and insulin levels and saw significant
decreases in those, as well. There is increasing evidence that as many as 50
percent of individuals with hypertension may also be insulin resistant. When
insulin is not working effectively, the body produces more, which leads to
higher blood pressure"
Flame-retardant
chemical builds up in humans - MSNBC, 1/29/02 -
"A chemical flame retardant [polybrominated
diphenyl
ether] commonly used in foam furniture padding is accumulating so rapidly in the
breast milk of nursing mothers that environmentalists and some scientists are
calling for a ban on it"
Exercise makes
arteries stretchy - MSNBC, 1/29/02 -
"Exercise
not only loosens the muscles and clears the mind — it also makes the arteries
more stretchy and less prone to hardening"
Hormone Replacement Improves Blood Flow To Heart in
Postmenopausal Women - Doctor's Guide, 1/29/02 -
"use of hormone
replacement therapy (HRT)
in postmenopausal women with no coronary risk factors improves blood flow to the
heart and may be helpful in preventing heart disease, the leading cause of death
in menopausal women in the United States"
How Green Tea May Fight Inflammation -
ABC News, 1/28/02 - "the researchers
looked at human lung cells that were cultured in a lab dish and treated with a
protein called tumor necrosis factor, which typically triggers the expression of
IL-8, resulting in the production of the IL-8 protein. In the body, the IL-8
protein attracts white blood cells to a particular site, resulting in tissue
inflammation ... But when the investigators introduced
EGCG in their experiment,
they found that it blocked the expression of IL-8. The higher the dose, the
greater the effect"
Many Elderly Acute-Care Patients Malnourished
- ABC News, 1/28/02 - "Roughly 9 out of
every 10 elderly patients
who are released from the hospital and admitted to a step-down facility for
rehabilitation or some other type of
subacute
care are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition"
Testosterone May Help Fight Alzheimer's
- Intelihealth, 1/25/02 - "There is
increasing evidence that
stress plays a role in the development of
Alzheimer's ...
Hormones such as
testosterone have been shown to regulate the brain's stress response ...
stress leads to a biochemical change in a brain protein, which is a primary
culprit in Alzheimer's disease ... his findings suggest that giving testosterone
to aging men or to
postmenopausal women may help to delay, prevent and possibly treat
Alzheimer's disease. The research was supported by the Alzheimer's Association"
Hormone Replacement Linked To Insulin Resistance, Regardless Of
Adiposity - Doctor's Guide, 1/24/02 -
"postmenopausal
women taking oral estrogen, with or without progesterone, show a greater degree
of insulin resistance than those not taking
HRT, even allowing for
total and abdominal adiposity"
Alcohol
Helps Guard Against Dementia - WebMD, 1/24/02 -
"One to three
drinks a day decreased the
chance of developing
Alzheimer's disease by more than 30%"
Improving Standards Of Hormone Replacement Therapy For
Postmenopausal Women - Doctor's Guide, 1/23/02 -
"A combination of
estradiol
and trimegestone
could be more effective for postmenopausal women than standard hormone
replacement therapy containing
estradiol
valerate
and norgestrel"
Nitric Oxide Gets Blood Flowing -
Delicious! Online, 1/02 -
"The biological gas
nitric oxide (NO)
lowers blood pressure,
improves blood flow and blood vessel diameter, and is derived from the amino
acid L-arginine ...
Research has suggested that
L-citrulline may be a more efficient way to get more L-arginine to the body,
even better than consuming it directly, since dietary L-arginine is not readily
absorbed"
In last weeks newsletter
I mentioned my results with T3, which has done more for my energy, mood and
feeling of well being than any supplement I've taken including
hGH. I did some more research and started a
separate triiodothyronine page.
Here are a few of the articles:
-
Does thyroid supplementation accelerate tricyclic
antidepressant response? A review and meta-analysis of the literature
- Am J Psychiatry 2001 Oct;158(10):1617-22 -
"This meta-analysis supports the
efficacy of T(3) in accelerating clinical response to tricyclic
antidepressants in patients with nonrefractory
depression"
-
Natural killer activity and thyroid hormone levels in young and
elderly persons - Gerontology 2001
Sep-Oct;47(5):282-8 - "Decreased serum
concentrations of total T(3) may contribute to low
NK
activity in the 'almost healthy' subgroup of the elderly"
-
Effect of triiodothyronine on mitochondrial energy coupling in
human skeletal muscle - J Clin Invest 2001
Sep;108(5):733-7 - "these data suggest
that T(3) promotes increased
thermogenesis
in part by promoting mitochondrial energy uncoupling in skeletal muscle"
-
Topical triiodothyronine stimulates epidermal proliferation,
dermal thickening, and hair growth in mice and rats
- Thyroid 2001 Aug;11(8):717-24 -
"85% more hairs per
millimeter ... topically applied thyroid hormone has dramatic effects on both
skin and hair growth. These observations offer a new strategy for developing
thyroid hormone and its analogues for treating disorders of skin and hair
growth"
-
Does low tri-iodothyronine independently predict mortality in
elderly hospitalised patients? - Int J Clin
Pract 2001 Jul-Aug;55(6):409-10 - "Our
study shows an association of low serum T3 with patient mortality in elderly
hospitalised patients"
-
Thyroid Hormone Replacement Therapy -
Horm Res 2001 Jan;56 Suppl S1:74-81 -
"Desiccated thyroid contains both thyroxine (T(4)) and triiodothyronine
(T(3)); serum T(3) frequently rises to supranormal
values in the absorption phase, associated with palpitations. Liothyronine
(T(3)) has the same drawback and requires twice-daily administration in view
of its short half-life ... TSH values of </=0.1 mU/l carry a risk of development of atrial fibrillation
and are associated with bone loss although not with a higher fracture rate. It
is thus advisable not to allow TSH to fall below - arbitrarily - 0.2 mU/l ... recent animal experiments indicate that only the
combination of T(4) and T(3) replacement, and not T(4) alone, ensures euthyroidism
[normal thyroid status;
A normal condition of the thyroid gland]
in all tissues of thyroidectomized
rats ... It could well be that a slow-release preparation containing both T(4)
and T(3) might improve the quality of life, compared with T(4) replacement
alone, in some hypothyroid patients" - RxList.com claims "The
biological half-life is about 2-½ days" but harcourthealth.com claims "Half-life:
1 day", yet another site says "Not
recommended for routine replacement due to it's short half life".
I've been dividing them in fourths and taking them throughout the day and it
does make a noticeable difference. - Ben

Use OF T3
Thyroid Hormone to Treat Depression - DrMirkin.com,
5/19/01 -
"some people become depressed when
they take just T4 and their depression can be cured when they take both
thyroid hormones, T3 and T4"
-
Adding
Natural Hormone Boosts Brain Function In Hypothyroidism
- Doctor's Guide, 2/11/99 - ""We found
there wasn't much difference between the two treatments in terms of metabolic
effects or effects on various peripheral organs,"

said. "There were big differences, however, in the mental state of the
patients"
-
Effects of thyroxine as compared with thyroxine plus
triiodothyronine in patients with hypothyroidism - N
Engl J Med. 1999 Feb 11;340(6):469-70 -
"among 15 visual-analogue scales used
to indicate mood and physical status, the results for 10 were significantly
better after treatment with thyroxine [t4] plus
triiodothyronine [t3]"
-
The acute effect of calcium carbonate on the intestinal
absorption of levothyroxine - Thyroid 2001
Oct;11(10):967-71 - "When 1,000
microg
of levothyroxine
alone was given to subjects, the maximum average total T4 absorption was 837
microg
(83.7% of the dose ingested) at 120 minutes. When
levothyroxine
was coadministered
with 2.0 g of calcium (as calcium carbonate), the maximum average T4
absorption decreased to 579
microg
(57.9% of the dose ingested) at 240 minutes"

The Endocrinology of Aging - Science
Magazine, 10/17/97 - "Age-related thyroid
dysfunction is also common in the elderly (18). Lowered plasma thyroxine (T4) and
increased thyrotropin-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations occur in 5 to 10% of
elderly women (18). These abnormalities are mainly caused by autoimmunity and are
therefore an expression of age-associated disease rather than a consequence of the
aging process (19, 20). Normal aging is accompanied by a slight decrease in pituitary
TSH release (18), but especially by a decreased peripheral degradation of T4, which
results in a gradual age-dependent decline in serum triiodothyronine (T3) concentration,
without an important change in T4 levels (21). This slight decrease in plasma T3
concentration occurs largely within the broad normal range of the healthy elderly
population and has not been convincingly related to functional changes during the aging
process (18). At present, the question of whether healthy aging people might benefit
from T3 replacement therapy remains uninvestigated."

Liothyronine Sodium - RxList.com -
"Twenty-five mcg of liothyronine [T3]
is equivalent to approximately 1 gram of desiccated thyroid or thyroglobulin
and 0.1 mg of L-thyroxine [T4]"
- I don't know if that is correct
concerning 1 gram of desiccated thyroid. That would mean that it would
take 17 of the normal 60 mg desiccated thyroid capsules to equal 25 mcg T3 and
100 mcg T4 (1000/60 = 17). I would think that that amount would be
lethal. Maybe it should have been grains instead of
grams. Any feedback would be appreciated. - Ben

Did You
Know? - jonnybowen.com -
"The body converts T4 to T3, and most
conventional docs who prescribe thyroid prescribe Synthroid or Levothyroxine
which is basically T4, on the theory that the body will convert to T3 as
needed. Problem is it doesn’t always work that way, and people differ widely
in their ability to make the conversion effectively. In addition, the body
needs selenium to make
the conversion, and most people are woefully low in this important antioxidant
mineral"

Keep Your Thyroid Healthy for Peak Energy
- Delicious! Online, 10/97 -
"In recent research, scientists determined that the conversion
of thyroxin to T3 is also controlled by the essential trace mineral
selenium"

Sustained Release T3 / Time Release T3 -
WilsonSyndrome.com - "When Dr. Wilson
first started treating Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome, Cytomel (instant release)
was all he used. When he had about 300 patients at a time on Cytomel, he would
get about 6-8 beeper pages over the weekend from patients having complaints
and 2-3 of those calls would be about some pretty worrisome side effects. When
Dr. Wilson conceived of and started using T3 mixed with a sustained release
agent (see WTS history) he would go 6 months without a page"
-
Synthroid / Armour Thyroid - WilsonSyndrome.com -
"Some patients and physicians hear
about the need for T3 and think they can gain the benefits of T3 by using Armour
instead of Synthroid because it contains T3. But Armour
thyroid doesn't contain just T3. It contains a lot of T4 as well! T4 is the
very hormone we're trying to reduce in WTS
in order to deplete RT3 levels"

Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome: A Reversible Thyroid Problem by E. Denis Wilson
MD
I just saw an advertisement on TV for
Bausch & Lomb Ocuvite. I looked it up on the Internet and the
package insert says "Ocuvite is the #1 vitamin-mineral supplement brand
among Eye-Care professionals". Take a look at the ingredients. They
are junk. A few examples: The copper is listed as cupric oxide.
WebMD says
"The type of
copper found most often in
vitamins and supplements, called cupric oxide, is not a type the body can absorb
easily ... Studies on animals have shown conclusively that cupric oxide is
totally worthless". It's got the dl form of
vitamin E, which
Dr. Weil says "The least useful
products are those that give you only synthetic dl-alpha tocopherol and nothing
else". It has the sodium selenate form of
selenium, which
Glen Luepnitz, Ph.D.
says "It is interesting to note that
selenium may be derived from more than one source. One such source is sodium
selenite,
the inorganic form of selenium. However, it has a lower toxicity threshold than
other forms of selenium and is rendered useless in the presence of vitamin C ...
L-selenomethionine,
on the other hand, is the organic form of selenium". It does
contain glutathione,
however
Delicious! Online says "Glutathione
is too large a molecule to effectively pass through the intestine into cells, so
supplementing with glutathione alone is not helpful". Ways to
increase l-glutathione are
vitamin C, NAC,
alpha lipoic acid, and
silymarin. Plus,
some of the preservatives in Ocuvite (Dibasic Calcium Phosphate,
Microcrystalline Cellulose, Crospovidone, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose,
Titanium Dioxide, Silicon Dioxide, Stearic Acid, FD&C Yellow No. 6, Triethyl
Citrate, Polysorbate 80, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) are worrisome. These are
just a few example of how consumers are being taken on supplements.
