Margarine Cholesterol-Lowering Claims Criticized - Medscape, 7/5/01, user=benhess, pwd=asdfgh - "The ASA said the advertisements referred to three servings a day but did not make clear that the 12g serving sizes for the margarine were considerably larger than a typical serving. It added that the 14% LDL cholesterol reduction claimed could only be substantiated in people aged 50 to 59 years. For all ages, the mean reduction was only 10-12%" - My problem with plant stanol margarines is that they also contain trans fatty acids (hydrogenated oils).  The only margarine that I know of that doesn't is Smart Basic. - Ben

Want to Stay Mentally Fit? -- Get Out There and Make Friends - WebMD, 7/5/01 - "Friendships and supportive emotional relationships of all kinds may be crucial for maintaining memory and thinking ability as we age ... unmarried adults appear to have higher mental functioning than married adults, and do not appear to differ in their mental abilities as they age" - My opinion is that it all gets back to cortisol.  Lack of support increases stress, stress increases cortisol and cortisol negatively effects memory and immunity.  See Denial Speeds Progression To AIDS, which also addresses emotional support lowering cortisol. - Ben
