Traditional and Dairy
Products and Vegetables Dietary Patterns Are Inversely Associated with the Risk
of Cataract in the Middle Age and Aged Population: A Case-Control Study - J
Nutr Health Aging 2021;25(10):1248-1254 - "Cataract is
one of the most common causes of visual impairment and blindness in the world.
In the present study, we have been trying to investigate the relationship
between major dietary patterns and cataract ... The results showed "dairy
products and vegetables" dietary pattern had a negative association with
cataract (OR: 0.301, 95%CI =0.137-0.658, P trend =0.002). The fourth quartile of
the "traditional" dietary pattern also showed a protective role against the
cataract (OR: 0.393, 95%CI =0.184-0.842, P trend = 0.036). The third and fourth
quartiles of "carbohydrate and simple sugar" pattern were more related with
cataract compared to the first quartile (OR: 3.574, 95%CI =1.665-7.671, and OR:
5.067, 95%CI =2.265-11.335, P trend <0.001 respectively). No significant
association was found between «nuts, seeds and simple sugar" dietary pattern and
cataract. ... It seems a dietary pattern rich in proteins and vegetables can
decrease the risk of cataract in middle-aged and aged subjects"

Healthy Vitamin C Amount Might Prevent Cataracts - WebMD, 3/24/16 -
"The new study included more than 1,000 pairs of
60-year-old British female twins. The researchers found that those who took in
high amounts of vitamin C in their diet had a one-third lower risk of cataract
over 10 years ... Hammond's team now believes that a person's genetics probably
account for 35 percent of the risk of cataract progression, while diet and other
environmental factors may account for the other 65 percent"

Vitamin E
and risk of age-related cataract: a meta-analysis - Public Health Nutr. 2015
Jan 16 - "age-related cataract (ARC) ... Dietary vitamin
E intake, dietary and supplemental vitamin E intake, and high serum tocopherol
levels were significantly associated with decreased risk of ARC, the pooled
relative risk was 0.73 (95 % CI 0.58, 0.92), 0.86 (95 % CI 0.75, 0.99) and 0.77
(95 % CI 0.66, 0.91), respectively. Supplemental vitamin E intake was
non-significantly associated with ARC risk (relative risk=0.92; 95 % CI 0.78,
1.07). The findings from dose-response analysis showed evidence of a non-linear
association between dietary vitamin E intake and ARC. The risk of ARC decreased
with dietary vitamin E intake from 7 mg/d (relative risk=0.94; 95 % CI 0.90,

study from 1997 to 2011 of 14,641 U.S. male doctors age 50 and older. Half took

placebo (n = 5761) in the cataract part of the study, and 14,233 men randomly
assigned to a multivitamin (n = 7111) or placebo (n = 7122) in the AMD part of

Preventative
Effects of Ginkgo biloba Extract (EGb761) on High Glucose-Cultured Opacity of
Rat Lens - Phytother Res. 2013 Sep - "Diabetic
cataract is one of the earliest secondary complications of diabetes ... we
examined the protective effects of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb761) on rat lenses
cultured in high-glucose conditions ... The cultured rat lenses were divided
into six groups: normal group, high-glucose group, high glucose plus low,
medium, and high concentrations of EGb761 groups, and a high glucose plus
bendazac lysine group ... Compared with the levels in the high glucose group,
EGb761 decreased the intensity of oxidative stress, decreased aldose reductase
activation and the level of advanced glycosylation end products, and suppress
the transforming growth factor-β2 or Smad pathway activation, further increase
the expression of E-cadherin and decrease α-smooth muscle actin, and therefore,
prevents the pathological changes of high glucose-induced lens epithelial cells
and ameliorated lens opacity. These results suggest that EGb761 has protective
effects on several pharmacological targets in the progress of diabetic cataract
and is a potential drug for the prevention of diabetic cataract" - See

Diet,
vegetarianism, and cataract risk - Am J Clin Nutr. 2011 Mar 23 -
"There was a strong relation between cataract risk
and diet group, with a progressive decrease in risk of cataract in high meat
eaters to low meat eaters, fish eaters (participants who ate fish but not
meat), vegetarians, and vegans. After multivariable adjustment, incidence
rate ratios (95% CIs) for moderate meat eaters (50-99 g meat/d), low meat
eaters (<50 g meat/d), fish eaters, vegetarians, and vegans compared with
high-meat eaters (≥100 g meat/d) were 0.96 (0.84, 1.11), 0.85 (0.72, 0.99),
0.79 (0.65, 0.97), 0.70 (0.58, 0.84), and 0.60 (0.38, 0.96), respectively (P
< 0.001 for heterogeneity). Associations between cataract risk and intakes
of selected nutrients and foods generally reflected the strong association
with diet group"

New
Evidence That Popular Dietary Supplement May Help Prevent, Treat Cataracts
- Science Daily, 7/15/09 - "The scientists exposed
tissue cultures of healthy rat lenses to either guanidine — a substance
known to form cataracts — or a combination of guanidine and carnosine. The
guanidine lenses became completely cloudy, while the guanidine/carnosine
lenses developed 50 to 60 percent less cloudiness. Carnosine also restored
most of the clarity to clouded lenses. The results demonstrate the potential
of using carnosine for preventing and treating cataracts, the scientists
say" - See

Cataract surgery linked with lessened dementia risk - Science Daily,
12/6/21 - "During follow-up of 3,038 participants
(an average of 7.8 years per person), 853 subjects developed dementia, with
709 cases of Alzheimer disease. Approximately half of the participants
(1,382 individuals or 45%) had cataract surgery. Analysis for risk of
developing dementia showed that subjects who had undergone cataract surgery
in either eye were about 30% less likely to develop any form of dementia for
at least 10 years after their surgery ... Analysis was adjusted for an
extensive list of factors including health-related confounders. Cataract
surgery could appear to have a protective effect due to a healthy patient
bias, where participants who underwent cataract surgery might have been
healthier and at lower dementia risk. Researchers performed analyses to
account for several types of potential bias, but still found strong
associations when these factors were accounted for"
