Study Supports Potential of Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs to Protect Against Alzheimer's - Doctor's Guide, 7/22/03 - "The pooled combined data from the cohort and case-control studies showed a relative risk of Alzheimer's disease was 0.72 among NSAID users ... Low-Cholesterol Diet as Good as Drugs - WebMD, 7/22/03 - "a vegetarian diet combining four types of cholesterol-lowering foods works as well as cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins ... It had four basic components: plant sterols in the form of a cholesterol-lowering margarine; soy proteins; sticky or soluble fibers such as fruits, vegetables, oats, and legumes; and almonds" - If you look at their sample menu, it contained a lot of psyllium.  That alone could have been responsible for a lot of the drop in cholesterol.  See:

Pizza Prevents Cancer? It's Part of the Mediterranean Diet - WebMD, 7/21/03 - "Gallus and colleagues sifted through diet surveys completed by 5,500 Italians ... regular pizza eaters had 34% less risk of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer, 59% less risk of esophageal cancer, and 25% less risk of colon cancer ... Italian pizza is less than 50% crust, 20% tomato sauce, 20% mozzarella cheese, and 4% olive oil ... There's less refined carbohydrates, plus cooked tomatoes, which are a rich source of lycopene, a natural chemical that has been shown in numerous studies to protect against cancer ... We think that there's a specific compound in cooked tomatoes that is protective"

Raloxifene Increases Bone Mineral Density and Decreases Osteoporosis Incidence Over 5 Years - Doctor's Guide, 7/21/03 - "Compared with placebo, raloxifene treatment significantly reduced values of bone turnover markers, including osteocalcin, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, and urinary C-telopeptide. In addition, raloxifene treatment was associated with 2.8% increase in BMD in the lumbar spine (P<0.001) and a 2.6% increase in total hip BMD ... Incidence of hot flashes was higher among women taking raloxifene"

Fish Once a Week Cuts Alzheimer's Risk - WebMD, 7/21/03 - "Weekly fish eaters had a 60% lower risk of Alzheimer's than people who rarely or never ate fish ... The beneficial effects of [fatty acids] from fish may be counterbalanced by toxins ... A high antioxidant/low saturated fat diet pattern with a greater amount of fish, chicken, fruits, and vegetables and less red meat and dairy products is likely to lower the risk of AD, as well as that for heart disease and stroke ... Cholesterol Ratio More Indicative Than LDL - Physician's Weekly, 7/21/03 - "the ratio of LDL and HDL cholesterol may be better for identifying the risk of heart disease compared to relying solely on the individual levels of each kind of cholesterol. The study found that the ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol and the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol can better predict the risk of heart disease rather than measuring LDL levels alone. LDL/HDL ratios may more effective at identifying high-risk individuals and tracking their progress on cholesterol-lowering drugs. The researchers noted that despite newer recommendations incorporating HDL into risk assessment, LDL continues to be the major target of cholesterol-lowering therapy ... Certain low-fat diets that reduce both LDL and HDL levels may be less beneficial than diets that boost HDL cholesterol levels. Losing weight, quitting smoking, and exercising more often can increase HDL cholesterol"

Lower cholesterol for healthy kidneys - USA Today, 7/20/03 - "men who had low levels of HDL or "good cholesterol" and elevated "bad" or LDL cholesterol were twice as likely to have evidence of kidney malfunction"

Low "Good" Cholesterol Predicts Death in Elderly - Medline Plus, 7/18/03 - "measured cholesterol levels in 561 subjects who had recently reached 85 years of age. The subjects were then followed for 4 years ... Levels of LDL, the "bad" type of cholesterol, did not influence the risk of death from cardiovascular disease ... Subjects with HDL cholesterol levels below 40 mg/dL were twice as likely to die from stroke or heart disease than were subjects with levels above 46 mg/dL ... Depression Most Costly Illness for Employers - Psychiatric News, 7/18/03 - "workers with depression cost employers more than three times the amount associated with lost productivity from all other illness ... Twenty percent of the $44 billion cost of depression was accounted for by absenteeism, while 80 percent of the costs associated with depression, or $35.7 billion, was linked to "presenteeism"—that is, present on the job but with significantly reduced productivity"

Vitamin D and Calcium Supplementation Effective for Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis - Doctor's Guide, 7/18/03 - "Adequate vitamin D and calcium intake is essential to the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends 200 IU/day of vitamin D for women aged 50 or younger years, 400 IU/day for those aged 51-70 years, and 600 IU/day for those older than 70 years ... In women over the age of 65, there is increased risk of osteoporotic fracture of the hip and non-vertebral sites. Daily vitamin D intake between 800 and 900 IU and 1200-1300 mg of calcium for this population results in increased bone density, decreased bone turnover, and decreased non-vertebral fractures ... Ritalin Seen as Possible Aid to Seniors - Medline Plus, 7/17/03 - "in older people, Ritalin helps them get up and moving. Most doctors though are wary of the drug because of potential side effects such as loss of appetite, elevated blood pressure and increased heart rates ... The Journal cited the case of Edie Dominquez, a 62-year-old liver-transplant patient, exhausted and dejected following his operation, feeling "like garbage." But, a generic form of Ritalin soon had him more responsive, talkative and eating better"

High-Fat Diet, Breast Cancer Linked - CBS News, 7/17/03 - "those who average more than 90 grams of fat a day have roughly double the risk of those who eat just 37 grams" - That's another area that hasn't been fully researched regarding the Atkin's diet.  Related article:

Both processed meat and red meat consumption were associated with increased risk ... Duration of multivitamin use was associated with a decreased risk of rectal cancer"
