Broccoli sprout extract may protect against oral cancer recurrence - Science
Daily, 6/23/16 - "With
head and neck cancer, we often clear patients of cancer
only to see it come back with deadly consequences a few years later ...
Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage and garden cress, have a high
concentration of the naturally occurring molecular compound sulforaphane, which
previously has been shown to protect people against environmental carcinogens
... 10 healthy volunteers drank or swished fruit juice mixed with broccoli
sprout extract for several days. The volunteers had no significant problems
tolerating the extract and the lining of their mouths showed that the same
protective genetic pathway activated in the laboratory cell tests was activated
in their mouths, meaning that the sulforaphane was absorbed and directed to
at-risk tissue ... to see how the extract performed in mice predisposed to head
and neck cancer. The mice who received the sulforaphane developed far fewer
tumors than their counterparts who did not receive the extract" - See

Fish Oil Supplementation
Enhances Pulmonary Strength and Endurance in Women Undergoing Chemotherapy -
Nutr Cancer. 2016 Jun 24:1-8 - "We investigated the
effect of fish oil (FO) supplementation, at 4
g/day, on the respiratory performance and blood lipid profile of 32 patients
with breast cancer at the beginning of
chemotherapy. They were randomized into two
groups: control (C) and FO supplemented (S) ... The S group showed a significant
increase in the maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressure (P ≤ 0.05 vs. Day 0)
and in the maximum voluntary ventilation (P ≤ 0.05). In the treadmill 6-min-walk
test, the S group had a significant increase in the walked distance (P ≤ 0.05).
Blood lactate concentration was significantly lower in the S group after 60
days, at rest, when compared to C (P ≤ 0.05). Plasma high-density lipoprotein
(HDL) cholesterol concentration remained the same after 60 days of
supplementation, while in the C group, it decreased significantly (P ≤ 0.05 Day
0 vs. Day 60). Triacylglycerol (TAG) plasma concentration in the S group was
lower when compared to the C group (P ≤ 0.05 Day 60S vs. Day 60).
Supplementation with FO caused improvement in the respiratory muscle strength
and endurance, ameliorated functional performance, and kept TAG, HDL
cholesterol, and lactate plasma concentration at normal levels" - See

Prevention of
Carcinogen-Induced Oral Cancer by Sulforaphane - Cancer Prev Res (Phila).
2016 Jun 23 - "broccoli sprout extracts (BSE) ...
Compared with vehicle, sulforaphane
significantly reduced the incidence and size of 4NQO-induced tongue tumors in
mice. A pilot clinical trial in 10 healthy volunteers evaluated the
bioavailability and pharmacodynamic activity of three different BSE regimens,
based upon urinary sulforaphane metabolites and NQO1 transcripts in buccal
scrapings, respectively. Ingestion of sulforaphane-rich BSE demonstrated the
greatest, most consistent bioavailability ... Together, our findings demonstrate
preclinical chemopreventive activity of sulforaphane against carcinogen-induced
oral cancer, and support further mechanistic and clinical investigation of
sulforaphane as a chemopreventive agent against tobacco-related
HNSCC" - See

Anti-Inflammatory Effects
of Spirulina platensis Extract via the Modulation of Histone Deacetylases -
Nutrients. 2016 Jun 21;8(6) - "We previously
demonstrated that the organic extract of Spirulina
platensis (SPE), an edible blue-green alga, possesses potent
anti-inflammatory effects ... Our results
suggest that SPE increased global histone H3 acetylation by facilitating HDAC
protein degradation, but decreases histone H3K9/K14 acetylation and p65 binding
at the promoters of Il-1β and Tnfα to exert its anti-inflammatory effect"

Flavonoids, Flavonoid
Subclasses, and Esophageal Cancer Risk: A Meta-Analysis of Epidemiologic Studies
- Nutrients. 2016 Jun 8;8(6) - "Comparing the
highest-intake patients with the lowest-intake patients for total
flavonoids and for each flavonoid subclass, we
found that anthocyanidins (OR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.49-0.74), flavanones (OR = 0.65,
95% CI: 0.49-0.86), and flavones (OR = 0.78, 95% CI 0.64-0.95) were inversely
associated with the risk of esophageal cancer. However, total flavonoids showed
marginal association with esophageal cancer risk (OR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.59-1.04).
In conclusion, our study suggested that dietary intake of total flavonoids,
anthocyanidins, flavanones, and flavones might reduce the risk of
esophageal cancer" - See

A Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Indonesian version (MoCA-Ina) was conducted at the beginning of treatment and after 6 weeks of therapy. It was found that all trials effectively improved poststroke VCI based on MoCA-Ina scores over the course of the study. There is no significant difference in ΔMoCA-Ina (score at the 6th week of treatment - score at the beginning) mean score among the three groups, indicating that gotu kola is as effective as folic acid in improving poststroke VCI. Gotu kola was shown to be more effective than folic acid in improving memory domain. This study suggested that gotu kola extract is effective in improving cognitive function after stroke" - See gotu kola at Amazon.com.
The effect of
(L-)carnitine on weight loss in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of
randomized controlled trials - Obes Rev. 2016 Jun 22 -
"Results from meta-analysis of eligible trials revealed
that subjects who received carnitine lost
significantly more weight (MD: -1.33 kg; 95% CI: -2.09 to -0.57) and showed a
decrease in body mass index (MD: -0.47 kg m-2 ; 95% CI: -0.88 to -0.05) compared
with the control group. The results of meta-regression analysis of duration of
consumption revealed that the magnitude of
weight loss resulted by carnitine supplementation significantly decreased
over time (p = 0.002). We conclude that receiving the carnitine resulted in
weight loss" - See

Potential mechanisms of action of yogurt include an increase in body fat loss, decrease in food intake and increase in satiety, decrease in glycemic and insulin response, altered gut hormone response, replacement of less healthy foods, and altered gut microbiota ... The relative energy and nutrient content and contribution of a standard portion of yogurt to the overall diet suggest that the percentage daily intake of these nutrients largely contributes to nutrient requirements and provides a strong contribution to the regulation of energy metabolism" - My updated yogurt recipe:

Higher protein intake has been suggested to maintain nitrogen balance ... Participants with diets in the lowest quartile of total protein density (<13.2%) were at a higher risk for low muscle mass (odds ratio (OR) 3.03, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.37-6.72) than those with diets in the highest quartile (≥17.2%). Similarly, participants with diets in the lowest quartile of vegetable protein density (<5.8%) were at a higher risk for low muscle mass (OR 2.34, 95% CI 1.14-4.83) than those with diets in the highest quartile (≥9.4%). Furthermore, the estimated skeletal muscle mass index increased significantly across the quartiles of total protein density (p = 0.023) and vegetable protein density (p = 0.025). Increasing daily intakes of total protein and vegetable protein densities appears to confer protection against pre-sarcopenia status" Use Honey to save money on Amazon purchases - CNET, 6/22/16 - "any given product might be available from other vendors that sell through Amazon and might actually offer a lower price ... That's where Honey comes in. Once installed, it displays another little badge alongside the price, this one indicating whether or not you're seeing the best price.
