Recent Longevity News for the seven days ending 10/31/07. You should consult your doctor if you are taking any medications. San Diego is still standing but we took a serious hit. Over 25% of the county burned, over a half million people were evacuated and over 2,000 homes and businesses were destroyed. I was in an advisory evacuation area not a mandatory evacuation area. Rancho Bernardo was the hardest hit. I don't know where the Rancho Bernardo line starts but it has to be within a half mile of my house. My mail goes through the Rancho Bernardo post office. Seems like everyone I know knows someone that has lost a home. Several people I know were forced to evacuate their homes and went to friends houses miles away just to be forced to evacuate from there. Last Wednesday the news said we passed Katrina. I don't know if that makes it the largest disaster in US history or not. Despite closing down major sections of the major interstates and not having any reasonable detours, things went fairly smoothly. Seven people that died. Not to undermine their deaths but that seems low. Two of the deaths were a couple found in a burned home in Poway. It doesn't seem possible that they didn't get the reverse 911, their neighbors didn't notify them, they didn't see the fire coming, their smoke detectors didn't work, they didn't notice the smoke and they couldn't get out of the house. Most of the California homes have a balcony door or window in every room that you can exit from plus the way I remember it, it was plastered on the news a full day before it hit Poway. I'm wondering if it was a suicide. The reverse 911 probably saved a lot of lives. Four of the seven deaths were migrates living in a canyon were the reverse 911 would not have helped. Some people didn't get reverse 911 calls because they used a PO Box for the address on their phone bill. That's something to think about if you do that. The reverse 911 system cost the county $300,000 to implement but it was worth it. If your area doesn't have it you might want to get after your government officials. They need to work on increasing the bandwidth on the emergency websites though. They were worthless because they were overloaded and crashed. The TV stations and TV websites could have been better at telling people what they needed to know instead of sensationalizing the fire. The TV websites were overloaded also and would not load half the time. Qualcomm Stadium was the major evacuation area. They had more volunteers than evacuees and they started turning away donations because they had so much. My friend went to see her burned home on Sunday and found out that when her house started burning, her neighbor and a cameraman broke into her house and salvaged her purse, which contained her credit cards and driver's license, some antique china and some pictures. The firemen were so overwhelmed that I don't think they even made it there. The only thing she was able to salvage from the ashes were some Christmas tree ornaments that her nephews had painted. The paint was gone but she says she'll have them paint them again. Someone put a sign on a burned home that said "No More Termites". They definitely won their battle with the termites. At least one of the fires was started by arson(s). We have the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) for governor. He talks like him when he talks about going after the arson(s). He has stayed in San Diego the entire time. There's a $300,000 reward for information on the arson(s) the last time I heard. That amount has been increasing from $50,000. Chemical In Red Wine, Fruits And Vegetables May Stop Cancer, Heart Disease, Depending On The Dose - Science Daily, 10/30/07 - "very high doses of antioxidant polyphenols shut down and prevent cancerous tumors by cutting off the formation of new blood vessels needed for tumor growth ... the same polyphenols play a beneficial role for those with diseased hearts and circulatory systems by facilitating blood vessel growth ... the amount of polyphenols necessary to obtain an anti-cancer effect is the equivalent of drinking about a bottle of red wine each day" - See grape seed extract at Amazon.com. Drug Commonly Used To Treat Bipolar Disorder Dramatically Increases Lifespan In Worms - Science Daily, 10/30/07 - "Nematode worms treated with lithium show a 46 percent increase in lifespan, raising the tantalizing question of whether humans taking the mood affecting drug are also taking an anti-aging medication" - See lithium products at OffshoreRx1.com or iHerb. Other anti-hypertension drugs with beneficial results included Propranolol HCI, Carvedilol, Losartan, Nicardipine HCI, Amiloride HCI and Hydralazine HCI" - Note: I'm big on Micardis (telmisartan). Valsartan and losartan (generic names so they shouldn't have been capitalized) are also ARBs. I'm wondering if telmisartan was in the study considering that it's not that popular yet. Statin Use Linked to Better Blood Pressure Control - Medscape, 10/23/07 - "After adjustment for demographics, body mass index, diabetes, smoking, exercise, low-salt diet, and antihypertensive medications, the odds ratio for having blood pressure under control was 1.46 for statin users compared with nonusers" Insulin Linked to Colonic Polyps, Neoplasia - oncologystat.com, 10/23/07 - "those with poorly controlled diabetes, identified by a high serum level of hemoglobin A 1c (HbA 1c ), were significantly more likely to have advanced colonic adenomatous polyps, compared with diabetic patients with better glycemic control ... patients with poorly controlled diabetes were more than sixfold as likely to have advanced polyps and nearly sixfold as likely to have right-sided polyps, compared with patients who had better glycemic control. The average number of polyps found in poorly controlled patients was 5.5; in better-controlled patients, the average was 2.5 polyps per patient. Results from a third study reported at the meeting showed that having three or more polyps was the strongest predictor of risk for recurrent advanced neoplasia in the colon" Low Calcium May Spur Breast Cancer Spread - oncologystat.com, 10/19/07 - "The study involved implanting breast cancer cells into mice and feeding them a low-calcium diet. The mice experienced a high bone turnover and showed a 43% increase in bone destruction, a 24% increase in tumor area, and a 24% increase in tumor cell proliferation compared to a control group" Abstracts from this week's Doctor's Guide Nutrition/Dietetics plus abstracts from my RSS feeds: Renoprotection provided by losartan in combination with pioglitazone is superior to renoprotection provided by losartan alone in patients with type 2 diabetic nephropathy - Kidney Blood Press Res. 2007;30(4):203-11 - "Renoprotection conferred by losartan combined with pioglitazone is superior to that conferred by losartan alone in subjects with type 2 diabetic nephropathy.
