Newer Antipsychotic Drugs Increase the Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death -
WebMD, 1/14/09 - "because these older agents cause
movement disorders in some patients, they have largely been replaced with
newer medications such as Zyprexa, Risperdal, and Seroquel ... Although the
study's results reaffirmed that people who use the older antipsychotic drugs
are twice as likely as nonusers to have sudden cardiac death, it also showed
a similar increase in risk for the newer medications. For these, the rate of
sudden cardiac death was more than twice that for nonusers"

Important Advantages Over Commonly Prescribed Agents In Treating
Schizophrenia - Doctor's Guide, 5/8/01 -
"while equally effective in alleviating the symptoms
of schizophrenia, has important tolerability advantages over other commonly
prescribed agents ... quetiapine was not associated with significant weight
gain ... sexual dysfunction is a frequent side effect of risperidone,
olanzapine, and haloperidol, but not of quetiapine ... results revealed that
the quetiapine patient group experienced a much lower incidence of EPS than
the other agents in the study"

Quetiapine Improves Psychosis And Mood In Schizophrenia - Doctor's
Guide, 4/17/01 -
"The study found that quetiapine improved psychosis

effects on cognitive skills, particularly verbal reasoning and fluency
skills and immediate recall, as well as on executive skills and visuomotor
tracking. The six cognitive domains also improved on average with sustained
treatment"

Improves Cognitive Function In Chronic Schizophrenia - Doctor's Guide,
3/19/01 -
"The quetiapine group showed robust improvements in
most cognitive domains assessed, including statistically significant
improvement on the verbal reasoning and fluency domain at eight weeks and
improvement of executive domain functioning and immediate recall at six
months ... the findings provided further confirmation of quetiapine's
broad-based efficacy, with significant improvements in positive, negative
and depressive symptoms ... Nearly 70 percent of the quetiapine subjects
completed the study despite the demanding protocol, compared to only 25
percent of the haloperidol subjects"
- Quetiapine Offers New Hope
For Patients With Parkinson's Disease - Doctor's Guide, 2/26/01 -
"not only showed quetiapine to be safe and effective
in this patient population, but also that significant improvements in
sustained attention and memory . . Furthermore, the improvement in psychosis
was not associated with deterioration in the motor symptoms of PD. In fact,
a modest improvement was observed in the United Parkinson's Disease Rating
Scale (UPDRS) total and the UPDRS motor subscale scores."

Weight gain and psychiatric treatment: Is there a role for green tea and
conjugated linoleic acid? - Lipids Health Dis. 2007 May 3;6:14 -
"Here we report on four cases of social anxiety
disorder treated with the atypical antipsychotic quetiapine.
Self-administration of conjugated linoleic acid and green tea extract may
have influenced objective anthropomorphic measurements; each patient had an
unexpected decrease in total body fat mass, a decrease in body fat
percentage and an increase in lean body mass. Since weight gain is a common
and undesirable side-effect with psychiatric medications, our observation
strongly suggests the need for controlled clinical trials using these
agents" - See

Risk of diabetes mellitus associated with atypical antipsychotic use among
medicaid patients with bipolar disorder: a nested case-control study -
Pharmacotherapy. 2007 Jan;27(1):27-35 -
"the risk of diabetes was greatest among patients
taking risperidone (hazard ratio [HR] 3.8, 95% confidence interval [CI]
2.7-5.3), olanzapine (3.7, 95% CI 2.5-5.3), and quetiapine (2.5, 95% CI
1.4-4.3). The risk for developing diabetes was also associated with weight
gain (HR 2.5, 95% CI 1.9-3.4), hypertension (HR 1.6, 95% CI 1.2-2.2), and
substance abuse (HR 1.5"
