A
natural food supplement may relieve anxiety, study suggests - Science
Daily, 5/24/21 - "He identified five candidates and
tested their effects on behavior in mice. That was how the researchers
zeroed in on beta-sitosterol, a plant substance sold as a dietary supplement
intended mainly to reduce cholesterol levels ... In a series of behavioral
experiments, mice given beta-sitosterol showed much less anxiety than the
controls. They were, for example, less fearful than the controls when placed
in an illuminated enclosure, daring to walk into its brightly lit center,
whereas regular mice were careful to stay on the darker periphery, avoiding
the stress of the bright light. Moreover, the mice receiving beta-sitosterol
did not exhibit any of the side effects that might be expected from
antianxiety medications -- their locomotion was not impaired, and they did
not refrain from exploring novel stimuli" - See

Beta-Sitosterol and the Aging Prostate Gland
- Life Extension Magazine, 6/05 -
"A study using the prostate cancer cell line LNCaP (an
androgen-dependent tumor) showed that beta-sitosterol decreased cancer cell
growth by 24% and induced apoptosis (programmed cell death) fourfold ..."

Stress, Cortisol and Health - Supplement Watch Newsletter, 10/02 -
"several lines of evidence have converged to
solidify the concept that stress makes us fat (because of
cortisol), thins our bones (because of cortisol), shrinks our brains
(because of cortisol), suppresses our immune system (because of cortisol),
saps our energy levels (because of cortisol), and kills our sex drive
(because of cortisol) ... Take a daily multivitamin/multi-mineral supplement
- because
calcium, magnesium,
vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are
needed for a proper stress response ... Chief among the supplements with
documented cortisol-controlling effects are
Phosphatidylserine, Beta-sitosterol,
Magnolia bark, Theanine,
Epimedium, Ashwagandha and
Passionflower"
- Natural Treatment for
Male Pattern Baldness - New Hope Natural Media, 7/3/02 -
"Those with
male pattern baldness may increase hair growth by taking a preparation
containing saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) and
beta-sitosterol ... Conventional medicines used to treat male pattern
baldness are designed to block the conversion of testosterone to DHT.
Topical application of minoxidil (Rogaine®) and taking oral finasteride
(Propecia®) have been shown to inhibit this conversion and to increase hair
growth, but both medications have been linked with several adverse side
effects, including fast heart rate, headaches, impotence, and decreased
libido ... 400 mg of a standardized extract of saw palmetto and 100 mg of
beta-sitosterol per day ... After about five months, hair growth in 60% of
the men taking the herbal combination had improved compared with their
initial evaluation. In contrast, only 11% of those receiving the placebo
improved"

Effects of phytosterols supplementation on blood pressure: A systematic review
and meta-analysis - J. ClNu, Dec 12, 2019 -
"supplementation with phytosterols can decrease both systolic BP (WMD: −1.55
mmHg, 95% CI: −2.67 to −0.42, p = 0.007) and diastolic BP (WMD: −0.84 mmHg, 95%
CI: −1.60 to −0.08, p = 0.03). Dose–response analysis revealed that phytosterol
intake change SBP significantly based on treatment dose in nonlinear fashion.
Subgroup analysis based on duration showed a significant effect of phytosterol
on SBP and DBP in subsets of <12 weeks. In addition, a significant effect of
phytosterol was observed in dosage of ≥2000 mg for SBP and <2000 mg for DBP"

Characterizing components of the Saw Palmetto Berry Extract (SPBE) on
prostate cancer cell growth and traction - Biochem Biophys Res Commun.
2008 Dec 4 - "Saw Palmetto Berry Extract (SPBE) ...

and stigmasterol as potential anti-tumor agents" - See

beta-Sitosterol induces G(2)/M arrest, endoreduplication, and apoptosis
through the Bcl-2 and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways - Cancer Lett. 2008
Feb 29 - "beta-Sitosterol (SITO) is a potentially
valuable candidate for cancer chemotherapy ... results suggest that SITO
induces endoreduplication by promoting spindle microtubule dynamics through
the Bcl-2 and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways"
