N-Acetylcysteine Mucolysis in the Management of COPD : Abstract and
Introduction - Medscape, 6/14/12 - "NAC may
exert its mucolytic and mucoregulatory action via several mechanisms (Figure
3). First, it works through depolymerization of the mucin glycoprotein
oligomers by hydrolyzing the disulfide bonds that link the mucin monomers.
This is possible because of the presence of free thiols (sulfhydryl groups).
Therefore, NAC decreases the sputum viscosity in vitro [Sheffner, 1963;
Davis et al. 1975] and acts as a mucolytic. Second, it plays a
mucoregulatory role as it can decrease sputum hypersecretion in experimental
rat models [Rogers et al. 1989]. Moreover, it has been demonstrated to
inhibit the mucus secretory cell hyperplasia and enhanced expression of the
MUC5AC gene in bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis in rats [Mata et al. 2003]"

Healthy gums, healthy lungs: Maintaining healthy teeth and gums may reduce
risk for pneumonia, chronic obstructive pumonary disease - Science
Daily, 1/18/11 - "patients with respiratory diseases
had worse periodontal health than the control group, suggesting a
relationship between respiratory disease and periodontal disease.
Researchers suspect that the presence of oral pathogens associated with
periodontal disease may increase a patient's risk of developing or
exacerbating respiratory disease"

Folate
intake associated with lung function, breathlessness and the prevalence of
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease - Asia Pac J Clin Nutr.
2010;19(1):103-9 - "The COPD patients had
significantly lower habitual intake of folate (mean 231, SD 90 mug/day) than
control subjects (mean 261, SD 110 mug/day), p<0.001. Lung function measures
were found to be positively associated with dietary folate level. Reductions
in prevalence of COPD and especially breathlessness were observed, the
respective adjusted odds ratio (OR) being 0.74 (95% confidence interval (CI)
0.35 to 1.58) and 0.43 (95% CI 0.21 to 0.91) for the highest versus lowest
quartile of folate intake. The corresponding tests for linear trend were
also significant (p<0.05). In conclusion, an inverse association was evident
between dietary folate intake and the prevalence of breathlessness for
Japanese adults, together with a significant dose-response relationship for
the COPD risk. Moreover, increased folate intake might be beneficial to lung
function"

Therapeutic Properties Of N-acetyl-L-cysteine Discovered - Science
Daily, 1/19/09 - "N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) combined
with mesalamine produces a significant improvement in patients suffering
from ulcerative colitis ... N-acetyl-L-cysteine, is a drug normally used for
the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to
minimize the effects of cold and flu. Its hepatic protective properties also
make this drug a useful tool in paracetamol intoxications ...
N-acetyl-L-cysteine reduced the negative effects caused by azathioprine, a
immunosuppressant of clinical use, on the liver" - See

15 per cent lower risk for people with the highest versus lowest intakes of
total fibre. In addition, the highest intake of cereal fibre was associated
with a 17 per cent lower risk, while fruit fibre was associated with a 28
per cent lower risk" - [Abstract]
-
Dietary Fiber, Lung Function, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in
the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study - Am J Epidemiol. 2007 Dec
5 - "Adjusted odds ratios of COPD for the highest
versus lowest quintiles of intake were 0.85 (p = 0.044) for total fiber,
0.83 (p = 0.021) for cereal fiber, and 0.72 (p = 0.005) for fruit fiber.
This study provides the first known evidence that dietary fiber is
