Coffee protects against breast cancer recurrence, detailed findings confirm
- Science Daily, 4/21/15 - "unlike in the previous
study, we have combined information about the patients' lifestyle and
clinical data from 1090 breast cancer patients with studies on breast cancer
cells. The study shows that among the over 500 women treated with tamoxifen,
those who had drunk at least two cups of coffee a day had only half the risk
of recurrence of those who drank less coffee or none at all ... Just two
cups a day is sufficient to make a difference"

Coffee may help prevent breast cancer returning, study finds - Science
Daily, 4/25/13 - "Patients who took the pill, along
with two or more cups of coffee daily, reported less than half the rate of
cancer recurrence, compared with their Tamoxifen-taking counterparts who
drank one cup or less ... One theory we are working with is that coffee
'activates' Tamoxifen and makes it more efficient"

Fish
oil boosts responses to breast cancer drug tamoxifen, researchers find -
Science Daily, 4/6/11 - "omega-3 fatty acids --
abundant in fish -- could be a safe and beneficial booster for tamoxifen
therapy ... [in rats] Omega-3 fatty acids produced a greater expression of
genes related to cellular specialization, or differentiation -- a sign of
lower cancer severity -- compared to corn oil. The combination of fish oil
and tamoxifen reduced the expression of genes linked to tumor growth and
spreading ... If a tumor was being treated with tamoxifen, the addition of
an omega-3 fatty acid diet seemed to make the tumor, at least at the
molecular level, more benign and less aggressive and responsive to
tamoxifen" - See

Effect of Coenzyme Q(10), Riboflavin and Niacin on Tamoxifen treated
postmenopausal breast cancer women with special reference to blood chemistry
profiles - Breast Cancer Res Treat. 2008 Apr 22 -
"Tamoxifen (TAM) ... TAM also has estrogenic
activity on liver and endometrium causing severe oxidative stress with
various biochemical derangements. Coenzyme Q(10), Riboflavin and Niacin
(CoRN) are well-known potent antioxidants and protective agents against many
diseases including cancer ... A statistically significant alteration in
various blood chemistry parameters, such as serum total bilirubin (S. BIL),
serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate
transaminase (SGPT), gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GT), uric acid
(UA), lipoprotein lipase (LPL), lecithin: cholesterol acyl transferases
(LCAT), potassium, calcium and Na(+), K(+)-ATPase in sole TAM-treated group,
was favorably reverted back to near normal levels on combinatorial therapy
with CoRN" - See

Drugs Can Cut Breast Cancer Risk for Some, Task Force Finds - WebMD,
4/15/13 - "One of the report's key findings was that
studies of tamoxifen reported a decrease in breast cancer incidence from
23.5 per 1,000 women in the placebo group to 16.5 per 1,000 among women
taking tamoxifen over a five-year period ... Tamoxifen is more effective at
reducing breast cancer risk, but it has more side effects ... there were
five fewer cancers per 1,000 women taking tamoxifen when compared with
raloxifene ... For tamoxifen, 8.6 per 1,000 women experienced a blood clot
compared with 4.6 per 1,000 in the "control" group ... The rates of
endometrial cancer, or cancer of the uterus, and cataracts were also higher
for women taking tamoxifen, but not for those taking raloxifene"

Reducing the side effects of treatment for prostate cancer - Science

gynecomastia and breast pain at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months of treatment compared
to men who received no treatment. Overall, treatment with tamoxifen was more
successful in reducing breast symptoms than treatment with an aromatase
inhibitor (anastrazole) or radiotherapy" - Note: They left out

Breast Cancer Survival: Femara Better Than Tamoxifen - WebMD, 10/21/11 -
"At an average follow-up of more than eight years,
postmenopausal women who took Femara for five years after surgery were 20%
less likely to have their breast cancer return and 21% less likely to die
from their breast cancer compared to postmenopausal women who too"
-
Toxicity of aromatase inhibitors may explain lack of overall survival
improvement - Science Daily, 8/22/11 - "compared
to tamoxifen, longer use of AIs was associated with increased heart disease
and bone fractures, but lower rates of blood clots and cancer of the womb.
There were no differences in the risk of stroke or other types of cancer.
Furthermore, use of AIs for 2-3 years after initial treatment with tamoxifen
was associated with a lower risk of death unrelated to breast cancer
compared to the use of either AIs or tamoxifen alone. The authors therefore
concluded that the toxicity of AIs when used for longer periods of treatment
may explain the lack of overall survival benefit while still having a
positive effect on breast cancer recurrence"

Medications Effective In Reducing Risks For Breast Cancer Can Also Cause
Serious Side Effects - Science Daily, 9/18/09 -
"The most common side effects for tamoxifen are flushing and other vasomotor
symptoms (e.g., night sweats, hot flashes), vaginal discharge and other
vaginal symptoms such as itching or dryness; for raloxifene, side effects
include vasomotor symptoms and leg cramps; and for tibolone, side effects
include vaginal bleeding ... Tamoxifen increases risks of endometrial
cancer, hysterectomies and cataracts compared with the other drugs.
Tamoxifen and raloxifene increase risk of blood clots, although tamoxifen's
risk is greater. Tibolone carries an increased risk of stroke"

process, SERMS may also disable the E-cadherin "glue-like" protein -- and
that, in turn, may ultimately turn any future cancers more aggressive"

Dog's tale of survival opens door in cancer research - USA Today,
7/24/02 -
"The treatment is a cocktail of so-called
anti-angiogenic drugs, which have been widely researched for more than a
decade and work by starving tumors of their blood supply. Researchers say
the three-drug combination, which Haber mixed into Navy's regular dog food,
targets the cancer from many angles ...
When researchers heard that Navy was cancer-free after receiving a cocktail
of drugs already approved by the Food and Drug Administration —
Celebrex, tamoxifen (sold as Nolvadex) and
doxycycline — the treatment became known as the Navy Protocol ... Navy's
treatment, though experimental, cost $2,000"
