green tea consumption of 1 or less cup per day, odds ratios for mild and
severe depressive symptoms were 0.96 for 2 to
3 cups (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.66 - 1.42) and 0.56 for 4 or more cups
of green tea per day (95% CI, 0.39 - 0.81; P for trend = .001), after adjustment
for confounding factors. Similar associations were seen for severe depressive

surprise: Vitamin C boosts the reprogramming of adult cells into stem cells

adding vitamin C, an essential nutrient that is
abundant in citrus fruits, enhanced iPSC generation from both mouse and human
cells. Vitamin C accelerated gene expression changes and promoted a more
efficient transition to the fully reprogrammed state. Somewhat to their
surprise, they found that other antioxidants do not have the same effect, but
vitamin C does seem to act at least in part through slowing cell senescence ...
It is also of interest that a vitamin with long-suspected anti-aging effects has
such a potent influence on reprogramming, which can be considered a reversal of

Mega Twin EPA at Amazon.com Milk thistle herb protects cancer patients from chemotherapy-associated liver toxicity - Science Daily, 12/27/09 - "Fifty children with ALL were enrolled in the study and were randomized to receive milk thistle or placebo for 28 days. At the start of the study, all of the children had evidence of liver inflammation as measured by elevations in blood levels of the liver enzymes, aspartate amino transferase (AST) and amino alanine transferase (ALT). When the investigators performed liver function tests on the children at day 56 (28 days after receiving the herb or placebo), children receiving milk thistle had improvements in their liver enzymes compared with children receiving a placebo. Specifically, the group that took milk thistle had significantly lower levels of AST and a trend towards significantly lower levels of ALT. Taking milk thistle also seemed to help keep fewer patients from having to lower the dose of their medications: chemotherapy doses were reduced in 61 percent of the group receiving milk thistle, compared with 72 percent of the placebo group. Gene activity was also measured under these same conditions. The reduced glucose caused normal cells to have a higher activity of the gene that dictates the level of telomerase, an enzyme that extends their lifespan and lower activity of a gene (p16) that slows their growth. Endothelial-Vasoprotective Effects of High-Density Lipoprotein Are Impaired in
Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus but Are Improved After Extended-Release
Niacin Therapy - Circulation. 2009 Dec 21 -
"Patients with diabetes were randomized to a 3-month therapy with ER
niacin
(1500 mg/d) or placebo ... HDL from healthy subjects
stimulated endothelial nitric oxide
production, reduced endothelial oxidant stress, and improved
endothelium-dependent vasodilation and early endothelial progenitor
cell-mediated endothelial repair. In contrast, these beneficial endothelial
effects of HDL were not observed in HDL from diabetic patients, which suggests
markedly impaired endothelial-protective properties of HDL. ER niacin therapy
improved the capacity of HDL to stimulate endothelial nitric oxide, to reduce
superoxide production, and to promote endothelial progenitor cell-mediated
endothelial repair. Further measurements suggested increased lipid oxidation of
HDL in diabetic patients, and a reduction after ER niacin therapy ... HDL from
patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome has substantially
impaired endothelial-protective effects compared with HDL from healthy subjects.
ER niacin therapy not only increases HDL plasma levels but markedly improves
endothelial-protective functions of HDL in these patients, which is potentially
