Healthy oil components may fight pancreatitis - Nutra USA, 1/3/12 -
"They found that the oleic acid and hydroxytyrosol –
both of which are present in a particularly high concentration in virgin olive
oil and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids – offered protection from
inflammatory damage from induced pancreatitis in pancreatic cells" - See

Probiotics appear to mitigate pancreatitis: Surprising hypothetical mechanism
warrants further investigation - Science Daily, 11/16/11 -
"The major finding: in the small intestine, higher than
normal numbers of the newly discovered bacterium, "commensal rat ileum
bacterium" (CRIB) were correlated with reduced severity of acute pancreatitis in
animals that had been fed probiotic. These animals had less infection of remote
organs, less infection of dying and dead pancreatic tissues, and less severe
immune response during acute pancreatitis, as demonstrated by lower plasma
levels of proinflammatory cytokines" - See

Carotenoid
deficiency in chronic pancreatitis: the effect of an increase in tomato
consumption - Eur J Clin Nutr. 2010 Dec 1 - "chronic
pancreatitis (CP) ... Of these patients, 84.7% had at least one carotenoid
deficiency and 27.5% had more than four carotenoid deficiencies ... Lycopene
concentration was decreased in patients with vascular disease (171+/-197 vs
99+/-72 μg/l; P=0.02). After an intervention period of 8+/-2 months ...
Carotenoid concentrations are dramatically decreased in CP, especially lycopene
in CP patients with vascular disease" - Note: There are over 600
carotenoids and some feel that taking high doses of just one may cause a
deficiency of the others. See

Antioxidants Offer Pain Relief In Patients With Chronic Pancreatitis -
Science Daily, 1/1/09 - "In this placebo-controlled,
double blind trial, 127 patients, ages 30.5+/-10.5, were assigned to placebo
or antioxidant groups. After six months, the reduction in the number of
painful days/month was significantly higher in the antioxidant group,
compared with the placebo group (7.4+/-6.8 versus 3.2+/-4, respectively).
The reduction in the number of analgesic tablets/month was also higher in
the antioxidant group (10.5+/-11.8 versus 4.4+/-5.8, respectively).
Furthermore, 32 percent and 13 percent of patients became pain free in the
antioxidant and placebo groups, respectively; the beneficial effect of
antioxidants on pain relief was noted early at three months"
