Recent Longevity News for the seven days ending 11/17/04:

Study: Low-Fat Diets Better Long-Term - Intelihealth, 11/16/04 - "Regardless of how they shed pounds in the first place, big losers stayed that way by limiting fat rather than carbohydrates"

Exercise May Reduce Metabolic Syndrome Risks - WebMD, 11/15/04 - "physical fitness was associated with lower levels of an inflammation marker associated with heart disease, known as C-reactive protein"

Subclinical Hypothyroidism Increases Risk of Heart Disease? - Physician's Weekly, 11/15/04 - "heart disease was 2.6-times more likely among participants with insufficient thyroid function than in those with normal thyroid function"

Two-Pronged Cholesterol Approach Works - HealthDay, 11/11/04 - "Niacin is the most effective treatment to treat low HDL ... Overall, combining niacin with a statin slowed disease progression 68 percent more than a statin alone. The combination treatment also resulted in a 60 percent reduction in heart attacks, deaths, strokes, and other coronary events"

Alpha-Linolenic Acid Intake Inversely Associated With Cardiac Events - Medscape, 11/11/04 - "women who consumed the highest levels of ALA — defined as approximately 1.5 g per day — "had a 46% lower risk of sudden cardiac death than women who consumed the least amount of [ALA], which was just over half a gram a day ... 1.5 g equals "about two capfuls of flaxseed oil or a handful of walnuts"

Statins May Lower Blood Pressure - Doctor's Guide, 11/10/04 - "simvastatin was associated with a 2.79-mm Hg decrease in systolic blood pressure and a 2.67-mm Hg drop in diastolic blood pressure, while pravastatin led to a 2.47-mm Hg decline in systolic blood pressure and a 2.47-drop in diastolic blood pressure"

High-Dose Vitamin E May Shorten Life Span - WebMD, 11/10/04 - "too much vitamin E -- daily doses of 400 IU or more -- actually increases the risk of dying" - Note:  Most vitamin E supplements are the d-alpha tocopherol or dl-alpha tocopheryl (synthetic) form, which have been shown to deplete serum gamma tocopherol and alpha tocotrienol.  I've been saying for some time that taking just the d-alpha tocopherol causes more harm than good (item 6 on my home page). See:

CRN Questions Conclusions Reached by Researchers in Recent Vitamin E Meta-Analysis - NPI Center, 11/10/04 - "Most of the trials involved middle-aged to elderly persons who had heart disease or other serious conditions or were at risk of disease. The placebo groups had an ACM rate of 1022/10,000 and the high-dose (defined by the researchers as 400 IU and up) vitamin E subjects had an ACM increase of 39/10,000"

High-Dose Atorvastatin Associated with Worsening Glycemic Control - Doctor's Guide, 11/10/04 - "Atorvastatin was associated with a statistically significant increased risk of developing an HbA1c greater than 6 -- both in non-diabetics and in diabetics"

Regular or Decaf, Coffee May Ward Off Diabetes - WebMD, 11/9/04 - "women who drank more than four cups of regular or decaffeinated coffee per day have significantly lower levels of a component of insulin than non-coffee drinkers ... This insulin component is called C-peptide"

Hypertension Drugs Serve Another Role - HealthDay, 11/9/04 - "Giving a hypertension drug to people with heart disease saves lives even if they have normal blood pressure, and a calcium channel blocker drug is more effective than an ACE inhibitor"

Metabolic Syndrome Can Reduce Mental Function - WebMD, 11/9/04 - "those with metabolic syndrome were 20% more likely to develop a decline in mental function compared with a group of elderly people without metabolic syndrome"

Hormone Protects Against Diseases of Aging - WebMD, 11/9/04 - "The elderly people in the study took 50 mg a day of DHEA ... Six months later, the DHEA group showed significant reductions in abdominal obesity (10% fat reduction around organs in the abdominal cavity among women and 7.4% among men) and improvements in insulin action or a decrease in insulin resistance" - See iHerb or Vitacosticon DHEA products.

Cholesterol & Statin Drugs - Life Extension Magazine, 11/04 - "PGX™. A relatively small amount (one to three grams before each meal) of this highly viscous fiber blend of glucomannan, xanthan, and alginate may help lower LDL and total cholesterol" - See iHerb PGX products.

Sterols: the key to heart health - Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals, 11/04 - "volunteers who drank one glass of sterol-fortified orange juice twice a day for eight weeks reduced their total cholesterol by 7.2 per cent, their LDL cholesterol by 12.4 per cent and their non-high-density lipoprotein levels 7.8 per cent"

Abstracts from this week's Doctor's Guide Nutrition/Dietetics:

Folate and brain function in the elderly - Curr Opin Clin Nutr Metab Care. 2004 Nov;7(6):659-664 - "folate status does predict response to antidepressant treatment in older individuals. Cognitive decline and some forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, are associated with lower folate levels. Supplementation with folic acid can provide cognitive benefits in some circumstances"

The metabolic syndrome, inflammation, and risk of cognitive decline - JAMA. 2004 Nov 10;292(18):2237-42 - "These findings support the hypothesis that the metabolic syndrome contributes to cognitive impairment in elders, but primarily in those with high level of inflammation"

Changes in whole-grain, bran, and cereal fiber consumption in relation to 8-y weight gain among men - Am J Clin Nutr. 2004 Nov;80(5):1237-45 - "an increase in whole-grain intake was inversely associated with long-term weight gain (P for trend < 0.0001). A dose-response relation was observed, and for every 40-g/d increment in whole-grain intake from all foods, weight gain was reduced by 0.49 kg. Bran that was added to the diet or obtained from fortified-grain foods further reduced the risk of weight gain (P for trend = 0.01), and, for every 20 g/d increase in intake, weight gain was reduced by 0.36 kg"

Effect of DHEA on Abdominal Fat and Insulin Action in Elderly Women and Men: A Randomized Controlled Trial - JAMA. 2004 Nov 10;292(18):2243-8 - "DHEA replacement could play a role in prevention and treatment of the metabolic syndrome associated with abdominal obesity"
