Bosch 2700ES tankless water heater purchased from Amazon.com.
Click here for the Bosch brochure. The main obstacle and what took the
most times was that I didn't have 3/4 inch gas line required. I had to
replace the 1/2 inch natural gas line going to the garage natural gas compressor
for my car with 3/4 inch then have a T with a line to the water heater.
That probably increased the cost of installation by about $400 for piping and
supplies. I'm estimating the total cost at about $1900 ($1159 delivered
for the tankless, and about $700 in supplies, mainly the 3/4 inch piping.
Was it worth it? They claim to last 20 years which is twice the tank type
life expectancy. Assuming that two tank type installations for the same
period would cost $1600, the tankless was about $300 more. However if you
assume a $15 per month natural gas savings over 20 years that comes to $3600.
Subtracting $300 from that comes to a $3300 savings over 20 years.

The pressure relief valve and gas sentiment valve as
per the instructions. |
Starting out, I had to remove all my roommates junk. |
Finally got everything out of the way and got to the
old heater. When I tried to turn off the water, the valve was shot so I
had to turn off the water to the entire house and replace that valve. |

This was the biggest headache. It was 1/2 inch and I
needed 3/4 inch. |
It looks heavy but even and old fart like me (59) was
able to bring it down and drag it out when it was empty. |
Old heater removed. |

Directions say to use 1 by 4s if you have plaster
board. I couldn't find the beam at 18 inches so had to go to 26
inches. I went with #14 screws 2 and a half inches for the 1 by 4s and
#14, 1 and a quarter inch for the bracket. The tankless just hangs on
the bracket. Those screws cost me two trips to Home Depot so plan
ahead. |
Finished product with the 3/4 inch natural gas pipe and
the drain. |
The
optional remote. I ended up going with 114 degrees which is more
than enough for a shower. |
