Association between SGLT2
Inhibitors vs DPP-4 Inhibitors and Risk of Pneumonia Among Patients with Type 2
Diabetes - J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2021 Nov 8 -
"Compared to DPP4is, SGLT2is use was associated with a reduced risk of pneumonia
and pneumonia mortality in a real-world setting"

Dietary
zinc protects against Streptococcus pneumoniae infection, study finds -
Science Daily, 8/22/19 - "mice with lower zinc intake
succumbed to infection up to three times faster because their immune systems had
insufficient zinc to aid in killing the bacteria ... Pneumonia accounts for more
than one million deaths every year, with the greatest health burden in countries
where zinc deficiency frequently remains a major social challenge" - See

- Probiotic and
synbiotic therapy in critical illness: a systematic review and meta-analysis
- Crit Care. 2016 Aug 19;19:262 - "Thirty trials
that enrolled 2972 patients were identified for analysis. Probiotics were
associated with a significant reduction in infections (risk ratio 0.80, 95 %
confidence interval (CI) 0.68, 0.95, P = 0.009; heterogeneity I (2) = 36 %,
P = 0.09). Further, a significant reduction in the incidence of
ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) was found (risk ratio 0.74" -

Extra vitamin E protected older mice from getting common type of pneumonia
- Science Daily, 12/16/14 - "The older mice fed a
diet containing extra amounts of vitamin E, the equivalent to about 200
IU/day consumed by humans -- about 10 times the Recommended Daily Allowance
but well below the upper limit -- were far more resistant to the bacteria
than the older mice that had a normal amount of vitamin E in their diet ...
Compared to the mice that had normal amounts of vitamin E in their diet, the
mice fed extra vitamin E had ... 1,000 times fewer bacteria in their lungs
... Two times fewer the number of white blood cells (neutrophils) ... The
reduced numbers of bacteria and white blood cells resulted in less lung
damage in the older mice who received extra vitamin" - See

Vitamin D Level and Risk of Community-Acquired Pneumonia and Sepsis -
Nutrients. 2014 Jun 10;6(6):2196-2205 - "The 25(OH)D
levels <37 nmol/L (adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.57, 95% CI 1.08-6.08) were
strongly associated with increased odds of CAP hospitalization" - See
vitamin D at Amazon.com.
-
Vitamin D deficiency in pneumonia patients associated with increased
mortality - Science Daily, 5/10/11 - "vitamin D
deficiency was associated with higher mortality within the first 30 days
after hospital admission for pneumonia. The association between vitamin D
deficiency was not explained by patient age, sex, comorbidities, the
severity of the systemic inflammatory response, or other known prognostic
factors"

Healthy gums, healthy lungs: Maintaining healthy teeth and gums may reduce
risk for pneumonia, chronic obstructive pumonary disease - Science
Daily, 1/18/11 - "patients with respiratory diseases
had worse periodontal health than the control group, suggesting a
relationship between respiratory disease and periodontal disease.
Researchers suspect that the presence of oral pathogens associated with
periodontal disease may increase a patient's risk of developing or
exacerbating respiratory disease"
-
Probiotic therapy cuts risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia in half for
some in ICU, study finds - Science Daily, 6/17/10 -
"daily use of probiotics not only decreased VAP
infections by about 50 percent compared to placebo, but also reduced the
amount of antibiotics needed in comparison to placebo-treated patients. This
reduction in antibiotic consumption led to significantly fewer Clostridium
difficile infections in patients given probiotics. No side effects
attributable to the probiotics were observed"
-
Serum zinc and pneumonia in nursing home elderly - Am J Clin Nutr. 2007
Oct;86(4):1167-1173 - "Normal serum zinc
concentrations in nursing home elderly are associated with a decreased
incidence and duration of pneumonia, a decreased number of new antibiotic
prescriptions, and a decrease in the days of antibiotic use. Zinc
supplementation to maintain normal serum zinc concentrations in the elderly
may help reduce the incidence of pneumonia and associated morbidity"

Community Acquired
Pneumonia Incidence Before and After Proton Pump Inhibitor Prescription
- Medscape, 12/16/16 - "The adjusted Cox regression

Flu Vaccine May Also Protect Against Pneumonia - WebMD, 10/5/15 -
"We estimate that approximately 57 percent of
hospitalizations due to influenza pneumonia could be prevented by influenza
vaccination ... The leading cause of these hospitalizations and deaths is
not flu itself, but pneumonia, which is a common complication of flu ... The
flu is a great enabler ... It enables heart disease, pneumonia,
appendicitis, sore throats and earaches ... And pneumonia is the number one
cause of hospitalization and death"

Pneumonia death rate lower among people who take statins, study suggests
- Science Daily, 4/4/11 - "Patients with a record of
pneumonia were followed for six months to see if they died and the
scientists found that 13% (109 out of 847) of statin users died compared
with 20% (578 out of 2927) of non-statin users"
