Effect of saffron and
fenugreek on lowering blood glucose: A systematic review with meta-analysis
- Phytother Res 2023 Mar 29 - "Saffron and fenugreek
have been shown to have an effect on lowering blood glucose; therefore, this
study aims to evaluate the effects of using saffron and fenugreek on blood
glucose control ... Overall, using fenugreek decreased fasting blood glucose
(FBG) (SMD: -0.90; 95%CI: -1.43 to -0.38; I2 = 87%; p < 0.001), postprandial
blood glucose (PPBG) (SMD: -1.13; 95%CI: -1.99 to -0.28; I2 = 94%; p < 0.001),
and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (SMD: -0.43; 95%CI: -0.75 to -0.12; I2 = 20%; p
= 0.29). Saffron supplementation reduced FBG (MD: -9.06 mg/dl; 95%CI: -16.25 to
-1.86; I2 = 40%; p = 0.12) and HbA1c (MD: -0.19%; 95%CI: -0.23 to -0.14; I2 =

Diabetic Rats through Suppression of Oxidative Stress - Evid Based
Complement Alternat Med 2022 Jun 6 - "Diabetes
mellitus-induced erectile dysfunction (DMED) is one of the most common
complications of diabetes and is mainly attributed to oxidative stress. Hu-Lu-Ba-Wan
(HLBW) is a classic Chinese formulation consisting of Trigonella foenum-graecum
L. (TFG) and Psoralea corylifolia L. (PC). HLBW has been used not only for the
treatment of diabetes but also for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in
clinics ... The results showed that HLBW significantly reduced blood glucose and
increased insulin sensitivity. HLBW reduced oxidative stress and apoptosis. In
addition, we observed that the expression levels of vWF, α-SMA, and eNOS as well
as the ratio of smooth muscle to collagen increased in the HLBW group"

Effect of Trigonella
foenum-graecum L. seed extract on the reproductive system of male mice and
possible mechanism of its action on spermatogenesis - Andrologia 2022 Apr 12
- "Fenugreek seed exhibits antidiabetic, antineoplastic,
hepatoprotective, antidepressant and immunomodulatory properties. Fenugreek also
causes antifertility effects in rodents ... Treatment with FSE caused
degenerative changes in the testis histoarchitecture. The treatment also
affected various sperm parameters and concentrations of sialic acid and fructose
in the epididymis and seminal vesicle, respectively. Fenugreek treatment also
had negative impact on oxidative status and germ cell dynamics in the testis;
fertility indices were also affected in female mice impregnated by the
extract-treated male mice, though libido of the treated male mice remained
unaffected. Results show that treatment with FSE caused adverse effects on the
male reproductive health and pregnancy outcome in Parkes mice"

Safety and influence
of a novel extract of fenugreek on healthy young women: a randomized,
double-blinded, placebo-controlled study - Clinical Phytoscience volume 7,
Article number: 63 (2021) - "Earlier studies have shown
that the hydro-ethanolic extracts of fenugreek are efficient in the management
of a number of hormone related disorders in women, including post and peri-menopausal
discomforts, sexual dysfunctions, lactation and even in amenorrhea ...
Forty-eight healthy menstruating women aged 20 to 48 were randomized either to
FHE (n = 24) or placebo (n = 24) and supplemented with 250 mg × 2/day for
42 days. FHE did not produce any side effects or adverse events. It offered
significant (P < 0.05) beneficial effects to sexual problems (41.6%) and
irritability (40%) among the participants who had higher sexual dysfunctions
scores (> 1) when monitored by the validated Menopausal Rating Scale (MRS)
scale. Further, hormone analysis indicated an enhancement in estradiol (P
= 0.040), free testosterone (P = 0.025), and total testosterone (P = 0.012) in
FHE group in comparison to placebo. There were no significant changes in
progesterone (P = 0.174) and FSH (P = 0.879) upon FHE supplementation. The
hematological and biochemical safety parameters were also at par with the safety
of the extract" - [Nutra

The effects of oral administration of curcumin–galactomannan complex on brain
waves are consistent with brain penetration: a randomized, double-blinded,
placebo-controlled pilot study - Nutr Neurosci 2020 Dec 9 -
"curcumin-galactomannan (CGM) ... A total of 18 healthy
volunteers aged 35–65 were randomly assigned to consume 500 mg CGM, Unformulated
curcumin (UC) or Placebo capsules twice daily for 30 days ... Supplementation of
CGM resulted in a significant increase in α- and β-waves (p < 0.05) as well as a
significant reduction in α/β ratio in comparison with unformulated curcumin and
placebo groups. Furthermore, the CGM showed significant reduction in the
audio-reaction time (29.8 %; p < 0.05) in comparison with placebo and 24.6% (p <
0.05) with unformulated curcumin. The choice-based visual-reaction time was also
significantly decreased (36%) in CGM as compared to unformulated curcumin and
placebo which produced 15.36% and 5.2% respectively" - [Nutra

Identification of Withania
somnifera-Silybum marianum-Trigonella foenum-graecum Formulation as a
Nutritional Supplement to Contrast Muscle Atrophy and Sarcopenia - Nutrients
2020 Dec 26 - "Muscle atrophy, i.e., the loss of
skeletal muscle mass and function, is an unresolved problem associated with
aging (sarcopenia) and several pathological conditions. The imbalance between
myofibrillary protein breakdown (especially the adult isoforms of myosin heavy
chain, MyHC) and synthesis, and the reduction of muscle regenerative potential
are main causes of muscle atrophy ... We identified WST (Withania somnifera,
Silybum marianum, Trigonella foenum-graecum) formulation as extremely
efficacious in protecting C2C12 myotubes against MyHC-II degradation by
stimulating Akt (protein kinase B)-dependent protein synthesis and p38 MAPK (p38
mitogen-activated protein kinase)/myogenin-dependent myoblast differentiation.
WST sustains trophism in C2C12 and young myotubes, and rescues the size,
developmental MyHC expression and myoblast fusion in sarcopenic myotubes.
Conclusion: WST strongly counteracts muscle atrophy associated to different
conditions in vitro. The future validation in vivo of our results might lead to
the use of WST as a food supplement to sustain muscle mass in diffuse atrophying
conditions, and to reverse the age-related functional decline of human muscles,
thus improving people quality of life and reducing social and health-care
costs." - See ashwagandha at Amazon.com,

Influence of a low-dose
supplementation of curcumagalactomannoside complex (CurQfen) in knee
osteoarthritis: A randomized, open-labeled, active-controlled clinical trial
- Phytother Res 2020 Nov 18 - "A 6-week, randomized,
open-label, active-controlled clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the
influence of a low-dose curcumagalactomannosides (CGM) (400 mg once daily) in OA
subjects. The treatment was compared with a standard combination of 500 mg
glucosamine hydrochloride (GLN) and 415 mg chondroitin sulphate (CHN), supplied
as a single oral dose twice a day. Out of 84 subjects randomized, 72 subjects
who have completed the study were evaluated for the safety and efficacy of the
treatments at baseline and subsequent visits (day 28 and 42), by measuring
walking performance, VAS, KPS, and WOMAC scores. CGM exhibited 47.02, 21.43, and
206% improvement in VAS, KPS, and walking performance, respectively, compared to
the baseline. Similarly, there was 31.17, 32.93, 36.44, and 35% improvement in
the pain, stiffness, physical function, and total WOMAC scores. CGM also caused
a substantial reduction in the serum inflammatory marker levels. The results
indicate that a short-term supplementation of a low dosage CGM exerted superior
beneficial effects than a high-dosage CHN-GLN combination in alleviating the
pain and symptoms of OA subjects" - [Nutra USA] - See

pain and vasomotor symptoms in postmenopausal women: A randomized,
double-blinded, placebo-controlled study - PharmaNutrition, 9 July 2020 -
"The present randomized, double-blinded,
placebo-controlled study investigated the effect of a unique extract of
fenugreek (FHE), at a dose of 250 mg × 2/day for 42 days on hormone balance and
postmenopausal discomforts. Postmenopausal women (n = 48) having characteristic
postmenopausal symptoms, as assessed by MRS questionnaire, were randomized
either to FHE (n = 24) or placebo (n = 24) groups ... The FHE-treated
participants reported the feel of well-being within two weeks of supplementation
and further improvement, in somatic, psychological and urogenital scores towards
the end of the study period. There were 2.9, 4.2 and 7.2 times reduction
respectively in hot flashes, night sweats and pain on leg muscles and joints
with significant improvement in irritability and vaginal dryness when compared
to placebo. Hormone analysis revealed significant increase in estradiol, free
testosterone, progesterone and decrease in FSH, SHBG and CTX-1 concentrations,
though within the safe range, indicating the trend towards attaining a hormonal
balance" - [Nutra USA] -

Testofen®
(Fenugreek extract) increases strength and muscle mass compared to placebo in
response to calisthenics. A randomized control trial - Trans Spt Medicine,
10 Mar 20 - "A total of 138 male participants (25‐47yrs)
were enrolled and randomized to three equal groups: 600 mg Testofen®/day, 300 mg
Testofen®/day or placebo ... All groups improved their maximal leg press from
baseline to 8 weeks, however, both Testofen® treated groups improved more than
placebo (P < .05). The 600 mg group showed decreases in body mass of 1.2 kg,
−1.4% body fat and an increase in lean mass (1.8%) at 8 weeks. The 600 mg group
also demonstrated an increase in testosterone concentration from baseline to 8
weeks. This study indicates that Testofen® may be an effective ergogenic aid for
individuals wanting to rapidly improve their exercise performance capabilities
and body composition above and beyond that of calisthenic exercise alone"

Studies on the
phytomodulatory potential of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) on bisphenol-A
induced testicular damage in mice - Andrologia. 2019 Dec 3:e13492 -
"Bisphenol A (BPA), an organic synthetic compound and
endocrine disruptor, which majorly cause deleterious effects on male
reproductory system. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), associated with
Leguminosae family is used as a herbal medicine with potent antioxidant
properties. The present study was aimed to scrutinise the preventative role of
fenugreek seeds aqueous extract (FSEt) on BPA-induced testicular damage in mice
... FSEt-administered mice showed improvement in the histoarchitecture compared
with BPA-administered animals. In addition, fenugreek treatment showed reduced
levels of malondialdehyde and elevated levels of antioxidant enzymes. Expression
studies of apoptotic markers revealed a significant decrease in the expression
of Bcl-2 and significant increase in caspase-9 and caspase-3. However, FSEt
restored the deleterious effects caused by BPA. The current findings plausibly
might have promising protective role against BPA-induced testicular damage"

"CurQfen (curcumagalactomannoside [CGM]), a food-grade
formulation of natural curcumin with fenugreek dietary fiber that has shown to
possess improved blood-brain-barrier permeability and tissue distribution in
rats. In this randomized double-blinded and placebo-controlled trial, 60
subjects experiencing occupational stress-related anxiety and fatigue were
randomized to receive CGM, standard curcumin, and placebo for 30 days (500 mg
twice daily). The study demonstrated the safety, tolerance, and enhanced
efficacy of CGM in comparison with unformulated standard curcumin. A significant
improvement in the quality of life (P < 0.05) with considerable reduction in
stress (P < 0.001), anxiety (P < 0.001), and fatigue (P < 0.001) was observed
among CGM-treated subjects as compared with the standard curcumin group, when
monitored by SF-36, Perceived Stress Scale with 14 items, and Beck Anxiety
Inventory scores. Improvement in the quality of life was further correlated with
the significant enhancement in endogenous antioxidant markers (P < 0.01) and
reduction in lipid peroxidation (P < 0.001). Further comparison of the free
curcuminoids bioavailability after a single-dose (500 mg once per day) and
repeated-dose (500 mg twice daily for 30 days) oral administration revealed
enhanced absorption and improved pharmacokinetics of CGM upon both single-

Physiological Aspects of Male Libido Enhanced by Standardized Trigonella
foenum-graecum Extract and Mineral Formulation - Phytother Res. 2011 Feb
10 - "The aim of the clinical study was to evaluate
the effect of Testofen, a standardized Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek)
extract and mineral formulation, on male libido (sexual drive, urge or
desire) in a double blind randomized placebo controlled study. The study
recruited 60 healthy males aged between 25 and 52, without erectile
dysfunction and randomized to an oral dose (two tablets per day) of the
active treatment (600 mg Testofen per day) or placebo for 6 weeks. The
primary outcome measure was the DISF-SR (male) self-administered QOL total
score and the four domain scores. The secondary outcome was specific quality
of life parameters. Testofen had an overall positive effect on physiological
aspects of libido. In particular, there was a significant increase in the
subdomains of sexual arousal and orgasm. Testofen had a positive effect on
QOL in self-reported satisfaction with muscle strength, energy and
well-being but did not have an effect on mood or sleep. Serum prolactin and
testosterone levels remained within the reference range. It was concluded
that Testofen demonstrated a significant positive effect on physiological
aspects of libido and may assist to maintain normal healthy testosterone
levels"
