First evidence that chitosan could repair spinal damage - Science Daily,
4/16/10 - "Cho was amazed to see that the spinal
cord was completely dark. None of the dye had entered the nerve cells.
Chitosan had repaired the damaged cell membranes ... Next Cho tested whether
a dose of chitosan could prevent large molecules from leaking from damaged
spinal cord cells. Testing for the presence of the colossal enzyme lactate
dehydrogenase (LDH), Borgens admits he was amazed to see that levels of LDH
leakage from chitosan treated spinal cord were lower than from undamaged
spinal cords. Not only had the sugar repaired membranes at the compression
site but also at other sites where the cell membranes were broken due to
handling. And when the duo tested for the presence of harmful reactive
oxygen species (ROS), released when ATP generating mitochondria are damaged,
they found that ROS levels also fell after applying chitosan to the damaged
tissue: chitosan probably repairs mitochondrial membranes as well as the
nerve cell membranes"

Chewing Chitosan-Loaded Gum Reduces Phosphate Levels in ESRD Patients -
Medscape, 2/16/09 - "Chewing chitosan-loaded gum
twice daily can significantly decrease salivary phosphate and serum
phosphate levels in hemodialysis patients and may help improve treatment for
hyperphosphatemia ... At week 1, the patients’ salivary phosphate levels had
decreased from 73.21 to 52.02 mg/dL (P < .01), and serum levels decreased
from 7.60 to 5.38 mg/dL (P < .00001). After 2 weeks, salivary phosphate
levels were reduced to 33.19 mg/dL (P < .00001) and serum levels decreased
to 5.25 mg/dL" - See

Little evidence to support weight loss effect of all chitosan supplements
- Nutra USA, 8/24/05 - "Bjarte Langhelle, marketing
director of Primex, which sells the LipoSan brand chitosan, agreed that
there are a lot of “not so good trials out there” ... Langhelle believes
that numerous chitosans on the market are totally insoluble, making them
ineffective"

0.2 kg gain in the placebo group"

(Chitosol) produces significantly greater weight loss than placebo ...
Although it is unclear whether chitosan helps with weight loss, it is clear
that all chitosan products are not equal"

Single-blind, placebo controlled randomised clinical study of chitosan for body
weight reduction - Nutr J. 2016 Jan 8;15(1):3 - [Nutra
USA] - "A phase IV, randomised,
multicentre, single-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical study was conducted by
administering chitosan capsules (500 mg, five/day) and indistinguishable placebo
capsules as daily supplements to 96 overweight and obese subjects for 90 days
... The mean changes in body weight were -1.78 ± 1.37 kg and -3.10 ± 1.95 kg at
day 45 and day 90 respectively in chitosan group which were significantly
different (p < 0.0001) as compared to placebo. BMI was decreased by10.91 fold
compared to placebo after 90 day administration. In concert with this, there was
also reduction in body composition and anthropometric parameters together with
improvement in QoL score. Chitosan was also able to reduce HbA1C levels (below 6
%) in subjects who had initial higher values. The mean caloric intake shows that
there was no change in dietary habits of subjects in both groups" -

Anti-obesity effects of chitosan and psyllium husk with L-ascorbic Acid in
Guinea pigs - Int J Vitam Nutr Res. 2012 Apr;82(2):113-20 -

chitosan influenced the reduction in body weight gain and FER, and the
increase in total fecal weight and fecal fat excretion in guinea pigs fed a
high-fat diet"

met the inclusion criteria. Upon meta-analysis, the use of chitosan
significantly lowered total cholesterol [WMD, -11.59 mg/dl (-21.45 to
-1.73), p = 0.02] but not LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol or triglycerides"

"Compared to CTL, the TRT group lost more weight
(-2.8 lbs vs. +0.8 lbs, p < 0.001) and fat mass (-2.6 lbs vs. +0.1 lbs, p =
0.006). Compared to PLA, the TRT group lost more weight (-2.8 lbs. vs. -0.6
lbs, p = 0.03), % fat (-0.8% vs. +0.4%, p = 0.003), fat mass (-2.6 lbs vs.
+0.6 lbs, p = 0.001) and had a greater body composition improvement index
(BCI) (+2.4 lbs vs. -1.9 lbs, p = 0.002)"
