And when I looked closely at the results of my at-home diagnostic test, I had an epiphany: My overall score was 26 breathing interruptions and blood-oxygen level declines, on average, per hour — enough to put me in the "high-moderate" category for apnea. But when I looked at the data sorted according to sleeping positions, I saw that I scored much better when I slept on my side: only 10 interruptions in an hour ... So I did a little experiment: I bought a $25 pulse oximeter with a smartphone app that records oxygen dips and breathing interruptions. When I slept on my side, there were hardly any ... Now I sleep on my side. I snore less. I wake up refreshed. I'm not daytime drowsy" - Note: Personally, I believe a sleep clinic I went to were con-artists taking the government Medicare and Tri-care system to the cleaners. Do Lipid Labs Need to Be Fasting? - Medscape, 9/29/22 - "the mean total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol values differed by greater than 2%. For LDL cholesterol, the values differed by less than 10% and triglycerides values differed by less than 20%. With this information, the researchers concluded fasting for routine lipids is generally unnecessary" Coffee Linked to Reduced Mortality, Cardiovascular Disease - Medscape, 9/27/22 - "Drinking 1 to 5 cups/day of ground or instant coffee (but not decaffeinated coffee) was associated with a significant reduction in incident arrhythmia. The lowest risk was with 4 to 5 cups/day for ground coffee (hazard ratio [HR] 0.83; 95% CI, 0.76 - 0.91; P < .0001) and 2 to 3 cups/day for instant coffee (HR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.85 - 0.92; P < .0001) ... Habitual coffee drinking of up to 5 cups/day was also associated with significant reductions in the risk of incident CVD, when compared with nondrinkers ... Significant reductions in the risk of incident coronary heart disease (CHD) were associated with habitual coffee intake of up to 5 cups/day, with the lowest risk for CHD observed in those who consumed 2 to 3 cups/day (HR 0.89 ... Coffee consumption at all levels was associated with significant reduction in the risk of congestive cardiac failure (CCF) and ischemic stroke. The lowest risks were observed in those who consumed 2 to 3 cups/day, with HR, 0.83 (95% CI, 0.79 - 0.87; P < .0001) for CCF and HR, 0.84 (95% CI, 0.78 - 0.90; P < .0001) for ischemic stroke."
Abstracts from this week: Riboflavin depletion promotes longevity and metabolic hormesis in Caenorhabditis elegans - Aging Cell 2022 Sep 30; - "partial depletion of riboflavin through knockdown of the C. elegans riboflavin transporter 1 (rft-1) promotes metabolic health by reducing intracellular flavin concentrations. Knockdown of rft-1 significantly increases lifespan in a manner dependent upon AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/aak-2, the mitochondrial unfolded protein response, and FOXO/daf-16. Riboflavin depletion promotes altered energetic and redox states and increases adiposity, independent of lifespan genetic dependencies. Riboflavin-depleted animals also exhibit the activation of caloric restriction reporters without any reduction in caloric intake. Our findings indicate that riboflavin depletion activates an integrated hormetic response that promotes lifespan and healthspan in C. elegans" - You can't go by one study on anything. See:
Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors and the risk of pneumonia and septic shock: A systematic review and meta-analysis - J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2022 Oct 1 - "Compared to placebo, SGLT2i significantly reduced the risk of pneumonia (pooled RR 0.87, 95% CI 0.78-0.98) and septic shock (pooled RR 0.65" - See empagliflozin inhousepharmacy.vu. DHA-Enriched Phospholipids Exhibit Anti-Depressant Effects by Immune and Neuroendocrine Regulation in Mice: A Study on Dose- and Structure-Activity Relationship - Mol Nutr Food Res 2022 Sep 30 - "It has been reported that eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), especially EPA-enriched phospholipids (EPA-PL), significantly ameliorated depression-like behaviour in mice, while the corresponding effect of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is weak. However, it was still unclear whether the limited effect of DHA on alleviating depression was remedied by dose and chemical structure adjustment to DHA-PL ... The results demonstrated that dietary 0.6% DHA-PL, instead of 0.2% DHA-PL and 0.6% DHA-EE, significantly rescued the depression-like behaviour with similar effects to 0.2% EPA-PL. Further studies revealed that dietary DHA-PL regulated immune dysregulation, inhibited neuroinflammation by NLRP3 inflammasome, and further improved monoamine systems and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis." - See docosahexaenoic acid at Amazon.com. Coffee consumption and skeletal muscle mass: WASEDA'S Health Study - Br J Nutr 2022 Sep 29 - "Compared with the lowest coffee consumption group (<1 cup/week), the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of low muscle mass prevalence were 0.62 (0.30, 1.29) for 1-3 cups/week, 0.53 (0.29, 0.96) for 4-6 cups/week or 1 cup/day, and 0.28 (0.15, 0.53) for ≥2 cups/day (P for trend <0.001). There were no significant interactions among the various covariates after Bonferroni correction. In conclusion, coffee consumption may be inversely associated with low muscle mass prevalence." Hawthorn fruit extract ameliorates H2O2-induced oxidative damage in neuronal PC12 cells and prolongs the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans via the IIS signaling pathway - Food Funct 2022 Sep 29 - "Hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida) fruit has a long history of use as traditional Chinese medicine and is shown to have many health benefits including antioxidant and anti-aging. In this study, the anti-aging mechanism of hawthorn fruit extract (HFE) is predicted by network pharmacology and further verified in H2O2-induced PC12 cells and Caenorhabditis elegans ... HFE significantly improved cell viability, increased superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activity, decreased lactate dehydrogenase release, the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and malondialdehyde content in H2O2-induced PC12 cells (p < 0.05). HFE significantly increased the mean lifespan of C. elegans by 28.43% (100 μg mL-1) and enhanced the stress resistance to H2O2, paraquat, juglone, ultraviolet radiation, and heat shock. HFE also suppressed the accumulation of aging pigments, improved the body bending ability, increased antioxidant enzyme activities, and reduced the contents of ROS and malondialdehyde. In addition, relevant gene expression, lifespan experiments with mutant strains, and molecular docking studies supported the results that HFE might extend lifespan through the IIS signal pathway" - See hawthorn betty extract at Amazon.com. Cocoa flavanol consumption improves lower extremity endothelial function in healthy individuals and people with type 2 diabetes - Food Funct 2022 Sep 27 - "diabetes and age are major risk factors for the development of lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD). Cocoa flavanol (CF) consumption is associated with lower risk for PAD and improves brachial artery (BA) endothelial function ... individuals with T2DM exhibit decreased endothelial function that is more pronounced in the femoral than in the brachial artery. CFs increase endothelial function not only in the BA but also the FA both in healthy individuals and in those with T2DM who are at increased risk of developing lower extremity PAD and foot ulcers" - See dark Chocolate at Amazon.com. Monosodium glutamate consumption reduces the renal excretion of trimethylamine N-oxide and the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila in the gut - Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2022 Sep 14 - "We previously demonstrated that monosodium glutamate (MSG) consumption increases trimethylamine (TMA) level in the renal tissue as well as dimethylamine and methylamine levels in urine of rats, suggesting the effects of MSG on humans. To better define the findings, we investigated whether MSG consumption alters serum trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) level, and as a consequence, induces kidney injury in the rat model ... In conclusions, our findings suggested that prolonged high dose MSG consumption may cause TMAO accumulation in the blood via reduction of renal excretion associated with acute kidney injury" Resveratrol alleviates salivary gland dysfunction induced by ovariectomy in rats - Biochem Biophys Res Commun 2022 Sep 17 - "Resveratrol (Res), found abundant in many medicinal plants, exerts multiple biological functions in the body, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties. Xerostomia is a major symptom of salivary gland dysfunction in menopausal women, which significantly compromises the quality of life ...
