Recent Longevity News for the week ending 8/23/17 Vitamin C may encourage blood cancer stem cells to die - Science Daily, 8/17/17 - "Vitamin C may "tell" faulty stem cells in the bone marrow to mature and die normally, instead of multiplying to cause blood cancers ... We're excited by the prospect that high-dose vitamin C might become a safe treatment for blood diseases caused by TET2-deficient leukemia stem cells, most likely in combination with other targeted therapies ... Changes in the genetic code (mutations) that reduce TET2 function are found in 10 percent of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), 30 percent of those with a form of pre-leukemia called myelodysplastic syndrome, and in nearly 50 percent of patients with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia ... vitamin C did the same thing as restoring TET2 function genetically. By promoting DNA demethylation, high-dose vitamin C treatment induced stem cells to mature, and also suppressed the growth of leukemia cancer stem cells from human patients implanted in mice" - See American Health Products - Ester C W/Citrus Bioflavonoids, 1000 mg, 180 veg tablets at Amazon.com.
Estrogen-mediated brain protection directly linked to intake of fatty acids found in oils - Science Daily, 8/17/17 - "the mice fed on cottonseed oil with DHA supplementation, took far longer for seizures to take hold -- proving that dietary sourced DHA was a key contributing factor ... When the researchers examined the brains of these mice they found that the soybean oil fed ones had over twice the concentration of estrogen present as those fed solely on cottonseed oil. The mice fed on cottonseed with DHA supplementation had even higher levels of the hormone, suggesting that estrogen production affects seizures, and that this is directly connected to DHA's presence" - See docosahexaenoic acid at Amazon.com.
Long-term testosterone therapy improves urinary, sexual function and quality of life - Science Daily, 8/14/17 - ""It is thought that testosterone treatment in men may increase prostate size and worsen lower urinary tract symptoms," said Abdulmaged Traish, PhD, professor of urology at BUSM ... However, he and Gheorghe Doros, PhD, professor of biostatistics at BUSPH, discovered that despite increased prostate size in the group that received testosterone therapy, there were fewer urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, incomplete bladder emptying, weak urinary stream and waking up at night to urinate ... In addition to these subjective improvements, the researchers conducted objective testing that showed that those men treated with testosterone emptied their bladders more fully. Finally, testosterone treatment also increased the scores patients received on assessments of their erectile/sexual health and general quality of life" Running rats remember better - Science Daily, 8/14/17 - "Early life interventions that increase physical activity may therefore help to build up this reserve, potentially delaying the onset of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease" Abstracts from this week: Multicenter, open-label, exploratory clinical trial with Rhodiola rosea extract in patients suffering from burnout symptoms - Neuropsychiatr Dis Treat. 2017; 13: 889–898 - "The majority of the outcome measures showed clear improvement over time. Several parameters had already improved after 1 week of treatment and continued to improve further up to the end of the study. The incidence of adverse events was low with 0.015 events per observation day" - [Nutra USA] - See Rhodiola rosea at Amazon.com.
Vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine and vitamin D levels in children and adolescents with obsessive compulsive disorder - Psychiatry Res. 2017 Aug;254:232-237 - "As a result we found significantly lower levels of vitamin B12 and vitamin D and higher levels of homocysteine in the patient group compared to control group (p values for all three scores were <0.001), whereas there was no significant difference between groups in terms of folate levels (p=0.083). This demonstrates that one carbon metabolism and vitamin D deficiency can play a role in the aetiology of OCD" - [Nutra USA] - See Vitamin D at Amazon.com and vitamin B12 at Amazon.com. Usual Choline Intakes Are Associated with Egg and Protein Food Consumption in the United States - Nutrients. 2017 Aug 5;9(8) - "This research illustrates that it is extremely difficult to achieve the AI for choline without consuming eggs or taking a dietary supplement ... adequate intake (AI)" - [Nutra USA] - See citicholine at Amazon.com.
