Recent Longevity News for the week ending 11/25/15 Long-term 'T' Does Not Up Risk for High-grade Prostate Cancer - Medscape, 11/25/15 - "In the study cohort, 574 men had used testosterone in the 5 years before diagnosis and 51,945 has not. The incidence of high-grade prostate cancer was 20.1% in the testosterone users and 27.0% in the nonusers" Upping Dietary Potassium May Have Protective Effect in Diabetes - Medscape, 11/24/15 - "The primary end point of the study was the first occurrence of any renal or CV events, which included initiation of renal-replacement therapy for end-stage renal disease and/or the occurrence of myocardial infarction, angina, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and death from CV causes ... Compared with patients in the lowest quartile of urinary potassium excretion, patients in the third quartile were 44% less likely to reach the primary end point, while those in the fourth, highest quartile of urinary potassium excretion were 67% less likely to reach the primary end point at the end of the study interval" Improving fitness may counteract brain atrophy in older adults, study shows - Science Daily, 11/19/15 - "the study participants who showed the greatest improvements in fitness had the most growth in the cortical layer, including both the group diagnosed with MCI and the healthy elders. While both groups showed strong associations between increased fitness and increased cortical thickness after the intervention, the MCI participants showed greater improvements compared to healthy group in the left insula and superior temporal gyrus, two brain regions that have been shown to exhibit accelerated neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease" Working up a sweat may protect men from lethal prostate cancer - Science Daily, 11/18/15 - "It's interesting that vigorous activity had the highest potential impact on prevention of lethal prostate cancer. We calculated the population-attributable risk for American men over 60 and estimated that 34 percent of lethal prostate cancer would be reduced if all men exercised to the point of sweating for at least three hours a week ... lethal prostate cancer among American men over 60 would be cut by 15 percent if they consumed at least seven servings of tomatoes per week and that 17 percent would be spared this diagnosis if they consumed at least one serving of fatty fish per week. Reducing intake of processed meats would cut the risk by 12 percent" Abstracts from this week:
Oleanolic
acid activates daf-16 to increase lifespan in C.elegans - Biochem Biophys
Res Commun. 2015 Nov 16 - "We investigate here whether
OA has an impact on
longevity in vivo, and more specifically, we have examined effects of OA on the
lifespan and stress tolerance in Caenorhabditis elegans (C.elegans). Our results
showed that OA could extend the lifespan, increase its stress resistance and
reduce the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in wild-type worms.
Moreover, we have found that OA-induced longevity may not be associated with the
calorie restriction (CR) mechanism" - See oleanolic acid at Amazon.com
Effects of
potassium supplementation on markers of osmoregulation and volume regulation:
results of a fully controlled dietary intervention study - J Hypertens. 2015
Nov 21 - "Potassium
was found to be effective in reducing BP at
higher levels of sodium intake, but to have little effect when sodium intake is
restricted ... Individuals received capsules containing sodium [3.0 g (130 mmol)/day],
potassium [2.8 g (72 mmol)/day], or placebo for three four-week periods ...
Increased potassium intake was associated with a significant decrease in 24-h BP
(-3.6/-1.6 mmHg)" - See

Curcumin
Suppresses Phthalate-induced Metastasis and the Proportion of CSCs-like via the
Inhibition of AhR/ERK/SK1 Signaling in Hepatocellular Carcinoma - J Agric
Food Chem. 2015 Nov 20 - "Our results suggest that
curcumin may be a potential antidote for
phthalate-induced cancer progression" - See

All participants were moderately photo-aged Korean women with visible facial wrinkles (age range: 43-86 y). Participants were randomly assigned to receive a placebo beverage or cocoa beverage that contained 320 mg total cocoa flavanols/d ... In moderately photo-aged women, regular cocoa flavanol consumption had positive effects on facial wrinkles and elasticity. Cocoa flavanol supplementation may contribute to the prevention of the progression of photo-aging" Protein Supplementation at Breakfast and Lunch for 24 Weeks beyond Habitual Intakes Increases Whole-Body Lean Tissue Mass in Healthy Older Adults - J Nutr. 2015 Nov 18 - "lean tissue mass (LTM) ... 60 healthy older men and women (aged 61 ± 5 y) with a body mass index (in kg/m2) of 25.8 ± 3.6 consumed either 0.165 g/kg body mass of a milk-based protein matrix (PRO) or an isoenergetic, nonnitrogenous maltodextrin control (CON) at breakfast and midday meals, the lower protein-containing meals of the day, for 24 wk ... LTM increased by 0.45 (95% CI: 0.06, 0.83) kg in the PRO group compared with a decrease of 0.16 (95% CI: -0.49, 0.17) kg in the CON group (P = 0.006). Appendicular LTM accounted for the majority of the difference in LTM, increasing by 0.27 (95% CI: 0.05, 0.48) kg in the PRO group compared with no change in the CON group"
Citrus
flavonoid, naringenin, increases locomotor activity and reduces diacylglycerol
accumulation in skeletal muscle of obese ovariectomized mice - Mol Nutr Food
Res. 2015 Nov 17 - "Dietary
naringenin suppressed
weight gain, lowered
hyperglycemia, and decreased intra-abdominal adiposity evaluated by magnetic
resonance imaging. Naringenin-fed mice exhibited elevated locomotor activity
monitored by infrared beam breaks, maintained muscle mass, and reduced muscle
diacylglycerol content" - See naringenin at Amazon.com
