Recent Longevity News for the week ending 7/15/15 Nutritional supplement boosts muscle stamina in animal studies - Science Daily, 7/7/15 - "The researchers then introduced a carnitine supplement. Exercise tolerance improved only in animals with normal CrAT activity in muscle. Muoio said these results strongly imply that carnitine and the CrAT enzyme work together to optimize muscle energy metabolism during exercise" - See acetyl l-carnitine products at Amazon.com and l-carnitine at Amazon.com. Abstracts from this week: Dietary (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate supplementation counteracts aging-associated skeletal muscle insulin resistance and fatty liver in senescence-accelerated mouse - J Agric Food Chem. 2015 Jul 8 - "Aging is accompanied by pathophysiological changes including insulin resistance and fatty liver. Dietary supplementation with (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) improves insulin sensitivity and attenuates fatty liver disease ... EGCG supplementation for 12 weeks successfully decreased blood glucose and insulin levels via restoring Akt activity and GLUT4 expression and stimulating AMPK activation in skeletal muscle ... EGCG beneficially modulates glucose and lipid homeostasis in skeletal muscle and liver leading to alleviation of aging-associated metabolic disorders" - See green tea extract at Amazon.com. Vitamin and carotenoid intake and risk of head-neck cancer subtypes in the Netherlands Cohort Study - Am J Clin Nutr. 2015 Jul 8 - "131 oral cavity cancer (OCCs), 88 oro-/hypopharyngeal cancer (OHPs), and 193 laryngeal cancer cases ... A strong inverse association was shown between vitamin C and HNC overall (multivariable-adjusted rate ratio for quartile 4 vs. quartile 1: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.23, 0.66; P-trend < 0.001), OCC (multivariable-adjusted rate ratio for quartile 4 vs. quartile 1: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.16, 0.77; P-trend < 0.05), and OHPC (multivariable-adjusted rate ratio for quartile 4 vs. quartile 1: 0.29; 95% CI: 0.12, 0.67; P-trend < 0.01)" - See American Health Products - Ester C W/Citrus Bioflavonoids, 1000 mg, 180 veg tablets at Amazon.com. Olive oil consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes in US women - Am J Clin Nutr. 2015 Jul 8 - "We estimated that substituting olive oil (8 g/d) for stick margarine, butter, or mayonnaise was associated with 5%, 8%, and 15% lower risk of T2D, respectively, in the pooled analysis of both cohorts" - See olive leaf extract at Amazon.com. Fish consumption and risk of myeloma: a meta-analysis of epidemiological studies - Cancer Causes Control. 2015 Jul 9 - "After pooling all risk estimates, a significant inverse association was found between the highest category versus lowest category of fish consumption and MM risk (relative risk = 0.65" - See fish oil supplements at Amazon.com. Olive Oil Polyphenols Decrease LDL Concentrations and LDL Atherogenicity in Men in a Randomized Controlled Trial - J Nutr. 2015 Jul 1 - "The consumption of olive oil polyphenols decreased plasma LDL concentrations and LDL atherogenicity in healthy young men" - [Nutra USA] - See olive leaf extract at Amazon.com. A Randomized, Double-Blind, Parallel Study to Evaluate the Dose-Response of Three Different Vitamin D Treatment Schemes on the 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Serum Concentration in Patients with Vitamin D Deficiency - Nutrients. 2015 Jul 3;7(7):5413-5422 - "In conclusion, a loading dose of 200,000 IU VTD3 followed by a monthly dose of 100,000 IU is the best dosing schedule to quickly and safely correct the VTD status" - See vitamin D at Amazon.com. Statin treatment alters serum n-3 to n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids ratio in patients with dyslipidemia - Lipids Health Dis. 2015 Jul 7;14(1):67 - "Serum docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels decreased significantly at 12 weeks in both groups (rosuvastatin: from 169.6 to 136.3 μg/mL, p = 0.006; pitavastatin: from 188.6 to 153.9 μg/mL, p = 0.03). However, serum levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and arachidonic acid (AA) did not change. In addition, the EPA/AA ratio did not change, whereas the DHA/AA ratio decreased significantly at 12 weeks in both groups (rosuvastatin: from 0.99 to 0.80, p = 0.01; pitavastatin: from 1.14 to 0.91, p = 0.003)" - See Jarrow Max DHA at Amazon.com. Does cooking with vegetable oils increase the risk of chronic diseases?: a systematic review - Br J Nutr. 2015 Apr;113(S2):S36-S48 - "we conclude that (1) the myth that frying foods is generally associated with a higher risk of CVD is not supported by the available evidence; (2) virgin olive oil significantly reduces the risk of CVD clinical events, based on the results of a large randomised trial that included as part of the intervention the recommendation to use high amounts of virgin olive oil, also for frying foods; and (3) high consumption of fried foods is probably related to a higher risk of weight gain, though the type of oil may perhaps modify this association" Fish, a Mediterranean source of n-3 PUFA: benefits do not justify limiting consumption - Br J Nutr. 2015 Apr;113(S2):S58-S67 - "By contrast, there is convincing evidence of adverse neurological/neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants and young children associated with methylmercury exposure during fetal development due to maternal fish consumption during pregnancy. Dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls present in contaminated fish may also develop a risk for both infants and adults. However, for major health outcomes among adults, the vast majority of epidemiological studies have proven that the benefits of fish intake exceed the potential risks with the exception of a few selected species in sensitive populations" - Note: If you look at the studies on the better fish oil supplements, nearly all of those toxins are filtered out.
