Human growth hormone: Not a life extender after all? - Science Daily,
1/26/10 - "People profoundly deficient in
human growth hormone (HGH) due to a
genetic mutation appear to live just as long as people who make normal
amounts of the hormone, a new study shows"
Green Tea Extract May Treat Uterine Fibroids - WebMD, 1/26/10 -
"In test tube studies with rodent
fibroid cells, cells treated with
EGCG grew more slowly and were smaller
after 48-72 hours. EGCG also prompted fibroid cell death. The researchers
write that it is "highly encouraging that, in our work, a relatively modest
dose of EGCG ... that was delivered in drinking water was successful in
inducing a dramatic and sustained reduction in fibroid tumor size up to
eight weeks after treatment." ... The researchers say their study suggests
that EGCG "might be particularly useful for long-term use in women with a
low fibroid tumor burden to arrest tumor progression and avoid the
development of severe symptoms that necessitate major surgery" - See

Physical activity associated with healthier aging: Links between exercise
and cognitive function, bone density and overall health - Science Daily,
1/25/10 - "After one year, women in both resistance
training groups significantly improved their scores on tests of selective
attention (maintaining mental focus) and conflict resolution. The program
simultaneously improved muscular function in the women ... Moderate or high
physical activity appears to be associated
with a lower the risk of developing cognitive impairment in older adults
after a two-year period ... The incidence of new cognitive impairment among
participants with no, moderate and high activity at baseline was 13.9
percent, 6.7 percent and 5.1 percent, respectively," the authors write ...
Fractures due to falls were twice as common in the controls vs. the exercise
group"
Pomegranate oil-seaweed mix may improve liver health and waist size -
Nutra USA, 1/25/10 - "Results showed that
body weight was significantly reduced
by an average of 5.5 kg in people in the
NAFLD group and 4.9 kg in the normal
liver function group. Women in the placebo group lost an average of 1.4
kilos. In addition, women with NAFLD experienced improvements in
waist circumference, body and liver fat
content, liver enzymes, and serum triglycerides" - [Abstract]

Cutting Salt as Good as Quitting Smoking - WebMD, 1/22/10 -
"Cutting U.S. salt
intake by just half a teaspoon a day would prevent up to 92,000 deaths,
99,000 heart attacks, and 66,000 strokes -- a benefit as big as smoking
cessation"
Vitamin D May Lower Colon Cancer Risk - WebMD, 1/22/10 -
"They discovered that those with the highest blood
levels of vitamin D had a nearly 40% decrease
in colorectal cancer risk than those with the
lowest levels" - [Science

Red Yeast Rice Comparable to Pravastatin for Statin-Intolerant Patients
- Medscape, 1/21/10 - "After 12 weeks of treatment,
red yeast rice reduced
LDL-cholesterol levels 30% from baseline, from 181 mg/dL to 126 mg/dL,
while pravastatin
reduced LDL-cholesterol levels 27%, a nonstatistical difference between
treatments. Similarly, there were no significant differences observed in
changes in total cholesterol, triglycerides, or HDL-cholesterol levels ...
Regarding the primary end point, the incidence of treatment discontinuation
because of myalgia, both red yeast rice
and pravastatin were equivalent. In the red-yeast-rice arm, one patient of
21 (5%) withdrew because of muscle pain, while two patients of 22 (9%)
withdrew in the pravastatin arm. Also, there were no reported differences in
the mean pain severity scores with the two treatments" - See

Chemical May Be Linked to Thyroid Disease - WebMD, 1/21/10 -
"A chemical compound used to make non-stick
cookware, food wrappers, and water-resistant coatings for carpets and
fabrics has been linked to an increased risk for thyroid disease ...
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) ... participants who had the highest levels of
PFOA in their blood also had the highest self-reported incidence of thyroid
disease"
Promising probiotic treatment for inflammatory bowel disease - Science
Daily, 1/21/10 - "Several recent studies have
identified butyric acid as a potential therapeutic agent for
IBD. Some gut bacteria produce butyric acid
naturally in the intestines, but in IBD patients some of these strains are
heavily depleted. Trials in mice have shown that injecting one such strain
Faecalibacterium prausnitzii into the digestive tract is effective at
restoring normal levels of
gut bacteria and treating the symptoms of IBD.
In addition, novel identified butyrate-producing strains, such as
Butyricicoccus pullicaecorum, have been shown to exert similar effects"
Retail meat linked to urinary tract infections: Strong new evidence -
Science Daily, 1/20/10 - "Chicken sold in
supermarkets, restaurants and other outlets may place young women at risk of
urinary tract infections (UTI)
... E. coli (Escherichia coli) bacteria originating from these food sources
can cause common urinary tract infections"
Blueberry juice improves memory in older adults - Science Daily, 1/20/10 -
"In the study, one group of volunteers in their 70s with
early memory decline drank the equivalent of 2-2
l/2 cups of a commercially available blueberry
juice every day for two months. A control group drank a beverage without
blueberry juice. The blueberry juice group showed significant improvement on
learning and memory tests" - See

High Omega-3 Levels May Slow Aging in Heart Patients - WebMD, 1/19/10 -
"Heart disease
patients with the highest blood levels of
omega-3 fatty acids appear to age more slowly
than those with the lowest blood levels ... Farzaneh-Far and his colleagues
looked at a marker of biological age -- the rate of shortening of
telomeres, structures at the end of a chromosome involved in its replication
and stability. As the telomeres shorten over time, the eventual result is cell
death, scientists believe ... In the new study, the higher the blood levels of
omega-3 fatty acids in the patients evaluated, the slower the rate of telomere
shortening ... patients with the lowest blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids
exhibited a rate of telomere shortening 2.6 times faster than patients with the
highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids" - [Science

Intakes of
Vitamin A, C, and E, and beta-Carotene Are Associated With Risk of Cervical
Cancer: A Case-Control Study in Korea - Nutr Cancer. 2010;62(2):181-9 -
"Those patients in the highest quartiles of dietary
vitamin A, beta -carotene, and vitamin C intakes had statistically significantly
lower cervical cancer risks than those in the lowest quartiles for vitamin A,
beta -carotene, and vitamin C: odds ratio (OR) = 0.36 [95% confidence interval
(CI) = 0.19-0.69), OR = 0.48 (CI = 0.26-0.88), and OR = 0.36 (CI = 0.18-0.69),
respectively. Total intakes of vitamins A, C, and E were strongly inversely
associated with cervical cancer risk: OR = 0.35 (CI = 0.19-0.65), OR = 0.35 (CI
= 0.19-0.66), and OR = 0.53 (CI = 0.28-0.99), respectively. The findings support
a role for increased antioxidant vitamin intake in decreasing the risk of
cervical cancer"
The
effects of Xanthigen in the weight management of obese premenopausal women with
non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and normal liver fat - Diabetes Obes
Metab. 2010 Jan;12(1):72-81 - "Xanthigen-600/2.4
mg (300 mg PSO + 300 mg brown seaweed extract containing 2.4 mg fucoxanthin)
resulted in statistically significant reduction of body weight (5.5 +/- 1.4 kg
NAFLD group and 4.9 +/- 1.2 kg NLF group, p < 0.05), waist circumference (NAFLD
group only), body (3.5 +/- 1.9 kg NAFLD group, p < 0.001; 3.6 +/- 0.7 kg NLF
group, p < 0.05) and liver fat content, liver enzymes (NAFLD group only), serum
triglycerides and C-reactive protein. Weight loss and reduction in body and
liver fat content occurred earlier in patients with NLF than in patients with
NAFLD. Fucoxanthin (> 2.4 mg) and Xanthigen-400/1.6 mg (200 mg PSO + 200 mg
brown seaweed extract containing 1.6 mg fucoxanthin) significantly increased REE
in NAFLD subjects compared to placebo. CONCLUSIONS: Xanthigen promoted weight
loss, reduced body and liver fat content, and improved liver function tests in
obese non-diabetic women. Xanthigen and Fucoxanthin also increased REE. This
product may be considered a promising food supplement in the management of
obesity" - See

Fat
redistribution preferentially reflects the anti-inflammatory benefits of
pioglitazone treatment - Metabolism. 2010 Jan 19 -
"high-sensitivity
C-reactive protein (hsCRP) ...
Pioglitazone treatment
for 12 weeks decreased serum hsCRP levels (0.83 [1.14] to 0.52 [0.82] mg/L, P <
.001) and improved glycemic control (fasting glucose, P < .001; glycosylated
hemoglobin, P < .001) and lipid profiles (triglyceride, P = .016; high-density
lipoprotein cholesterol, P < .001). Between responders and nonresponders to the
hsCRP-lowering effect of pioglitazone, there were significant differences in
baseline hsCRP levels and changes in the postprandial glucose and the ratio of
visceral fat thickness (VFT) to subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) (P = .004,
.011, and .001, respectively). The percentage change in hsCRP levels after
treatment was inversely correlated with baseline hsCRP levels (r = -0.497, P <
.001) and directly correlated with the change in postprandial glucose (r =
0.251, P = .021), VFT (r = 0.246, P = .030), and VFT/SFT ratio (r = 0.276, P =
.015). Logistic regression analysis revealed that the hsCRP-lowering effect of
pioglitazone was affected by baseline hsCRP levels (odds ratio [OR] = 7.929, P =
.007) as well as changes in postprandial 2-hour glucose (OR = 0.716, P = .025)
and VFT/SFT ratio (OR = 0.055, P = .009). In conclusion, treatment with
pioglitazone produced an anti-inflammatory effect, decreasing serum hsCRP
levels; and a decrease in the VFT/SFT ratio was independently and most strongly
associated with the hsCRP-decreasing effect. These results suggest that
abdominal fat redistribution preferentially
reflects the anti-inflammatory benefits of pioglitazone treatment" - See

Conjugated
Linoleic Acid Ameliorates Inflammation-Induced Colorectal Cancer in Mice through
Activation of PPAR{gamma} - J Nutr. 2010 Jan 20 - "Conjugated
linoleic acid (CLA) exerts a protective effect on experimental inflammatory
bowel disease and shows promise as a chemopreventive agent against
colorectal cancer (CRC) in mice, although the
mechanisms by which it exerts its beneficial effects against malignancies in the
gut are not completely understood ... Dietary CLA ameliorated disease activity,
decreased colitis, and prevented adenocarcinoma formation in the
PPARgamma-expressing floxed mice but not in the tissue-specific PPARgamma-null
mice. Dietary CLA supplementation significantly decreased the percentages of
macrophages in the mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) regardless of the genotype and
increased regulatory T cell numbers in MLN of PPARgamma-expressing, but not in
the tissue-specific, PPARgamma-null mice. Colonic tumor necrosis factor-alpha
mRNA expression was significantly suppressed in CLA-fed, PPARgamma-expressing
mice. This study suggests CLA ameliorates colitis and prevents tumor formation
in part through a PPARgamma-dependent mechanism" - See

Anthocyanin-Rich Bilberry Extract Ameliorates Hyperglycemia and Insulin
Sensitivity via Activation of AMP-Activated Protein Kinase in Diabetic Mice
- J Nutr. 2010 Jan 20 - "Blueberries
or bilberries contain large amounts of
anthocyanins, making them one of the richest sources of dietary anthocyanin ...
bilberry extract (BBE) ... Dietary BBE significantly reduced the blood glucose
concentration and enhanced insulin sensitivity ... These findings provide a
biochemical basis for the use of bilberry fruits and have important implications

Urinary
melatonin and risk of incident hypertension among young women J Hypertens.
2010 Jan 19 - "During 8 years of follow-up, a total of
125 women developed hypertension. The
relative risk for incident hypertension among women in the highest quartile of
urinary melatonin (>27.0 ng/mg creatinine) as
compared with the lowest quartile (<10.1 ng/mg creatinine) was 0.49 (95%
confidence interval 0.28-0.85, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: First morning melatonin
levels are independently and inversely associated with incident hypertension;
low melatonin production may be a pathophysiologic factor in the development of
hypertension" - See

Association
of marine omega-3 fatty acid levels with telomeric aging in patients with
coronary heart disease - JAMA. 2010 Jan 20;303(3):250-7 -
"Individuals in the lowest quartile of
DHA+EPA experienced the fastest rate of
telomere shortening (0.13
telomere-to-single-copy gene ratio [T/S] units over 5 years; 95% confidence
interval [CI], 0.09-0.17), whereas those in the highest quartile experienced the
slowest rate of telomere shortening (0.05 T/S units over 5 years; 95% CI,
0.02-0.08; P < .001 for linear trend across quartiles). Levels of DHA+EPA were
associated with less telomere shortening before (unadjusted beta coefficient x
10(-3) = 0.06; 95% CI, 0.02-0.10) and after (adjusted beta coefficient x 10(-3)
= 0.05; 95% CI, 0.01-0.08) sequential adjustment for established risk factors
and potential confounders. Each 1-SD increase in DHA+EPA levels was associated
with a 32% reduction in the odds of telomere shortening (adjusted odds ratio,
0.68; 95% CI, 0.47-0.98)" - See

Association
of dietary fat, vegetables and antioxidant micronutrients with skin ageing in
Japanese women - Br J Nutr. 2010 Jan 20:1-6 - "The
extent of facial wrinkles in the crow's-foot
area was determined by observation using the Daniell scale. Each subject's usual
diet was determined with the use of a validated FFQ. After controlling for
covariates including age, smoking status, BMI and lifetime sun exposure, the
results showed that higher intakes of total fat, saturated fat and
monounsaturated fat were significantly associated with increased skin
elasticity. A higher intake of green and yellow vegetables was significantly
associated with a decreased Daniell wrinkling score. Intake of saturated fat was
significantly inversely associated with the Daniell wrinkling score after
additional adjustment for green and yellow vegetable intake"
Moderate
physical activity and breast cancer risk: the effect of menopausal status -
Cancer Causes Control. 2010 Jan 19 - "Participating in
moderate-intensity physical activity decreased
the risk of BC in both pre- and postmenopausal
women (OR = 0.96; 95% CI 0.92.-0.99; OR = 0.90; 95% CI 0.86-0.93, respectively)
for every 3 h per week of moderate-intensity physical activity. There was a
statistically significant modification effect by menopausal status"
Dietary fat
and early-onset prostate cancer risk - Br J Nutr. 2010 Jan 19:1-6 -
"A nutritional database was used to calculate daily fat
intake. A positive, statistically significant risk estimate for the highest v.
lowest quintile of intake of total fat, SFA, MUFA and PUFA was observed when
adjusted for confounding variables: OR 2.53 (95 % CI 1.72, 3.74), OR 2.49 (95 %
CI 1.69, 3.66), OR 2.69 (95 % CI 1.82, 3.96) and OR 2.34 (95 % CI 1.59, 3.46),
respectively, with all P for trend < 0.001. In conclusion, there was a positive
statistically significant association between
prostate cancer risk and energy-adjusted intake of total fat and fat
subtypes. These results potentially identify a modifiable risk factor for
early-onset prostate cancer"
Impact of
cocoa flavanol consumption on blood pressure responsiveness to exercise - Br
J Nutr. 2010 Jan 19:1-5 - "randomised to consume single
servings of either a high-flavanol (HF, 701 mg)
or a low-flavanol (LF, 22 mg) cocoa beverage
in a double-blind, cross-over design ... the BP response to
exercise (area under BP curve) was attenuated
by HF compared with LF. BP increases were 68 % lower for DBP (P = 0.03) and 14 %
lower for mean BP (P = 0.05). FMD measurements were higher after taking HF than
after taking LF (6.1 (se 0.6) % v. 3.4 (se 0.5) %, P < 0.001). By facilitating
vasodilation and attenuating exercise-induced increases in BP, cocoa flavanols
may decrease cardiovascular risk and enhance the cardiovascular benefits of
moderate intensity exercise in at-risk individuals"

Dietary
glycemic index and the risk of age-related macular degeneration - Am J
Clin Nutr. 2008 Oct;88(4):1104-10 - "a higher mean
dietary glycemic index was associated with an increased 10-y risk of early
AMD in a comparison of quartiles 1 and 4 [relative risk (RR): 1.77; 95% CI:
1.13, 2.78; P for trend = 0.03]. Conversely, a greater consumption of cereal
fiber (RR: 0.68; 95% CI: 0.44, 1.04; P for trend = 0.05) and breads and
cereals (predominantly lower glycemic index foods such as oatmeal) (RR:
0.67; 95% CI: 0.44, 1.02; P for trend = 0.03) was associated with a reduced
risk of incident early AMD ... A high-glycemic-index diet is a risk factor
for early AMD-the recognized precursor of sight-threatening late AMD.
Low-glycemic-index foods such as oatmeal may protect against early AMD"

processed, store-bought junk foods. Included in the study: margarine,
chocolate, commercially prepared pie, cake, cookies, peanut butter, potato
chips, french fries and nuts ... The study found that diets high in omega-3
fatty acids, found primarily in albacore tuna and salmon, could lessen the
risk for age-related macular degeneration, as long as fish eaters maintain a
low intake of linoleic acid (found in processed food and margarine)."

Inflammation Linked to Age-Related Maculopathy - Doctor's Guide, 6/11/03
-
"2 physiological signs of systemic
inflammation, high white blood cell (WBC) count and low serum albumin
levels, were associated with long term incidence of lesions characteristic
of ARM ... Specifically, higher WBC count at baseline was linked to 2 early
signs of ARM, an increase in large retinal drusen and RPE depigmentation, as
well as progression of ARM. Lower serum albumin was associated with a late
sign of ARM, exudative macular degeneration" - See my
inflammation page for ways to reduce it.
