Recent Longevity News for the week ending 10/11/17

A need for bananas? Dietary potassium regulates calcification of arteries - Science Daily, 10/5/17 - "Bananas and avocados -- foods that are rich in potassium -- may help protect against pathogenic vascular calcification, also known as hardening of the arteries" - See potassium citrate at Amazon.com.

Good-guy bacteria may help cancer immunotherapies do their job - Science Daily, 10/5/17 - "there were certain good-guy bacteria that are needed to optimize the effectiveness of checkpoint inhibitors. These bacteria somehow prime your immune system so that it's better able to attack cancer cells and kill them ... As a group, patients who responded well to the immunotherapy had three specific bacteria: Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron ... Faecalibacterium prausnitzii ... Holdemania filiformis ... All three are common normal flora in the human intestinal tract ... Is it something the bacteria are making? We examined metabolites in these subjects and found the strongest correlation between anacardic acid, present in cashews and mangoes, and the beneficial bacteria ... they may lead eventually to a probiotic cocktail that could be given along with immunotherapy to enhance the chance of response" - See probiotic products at Amazon.com.

Black tea may help with weight loss, too - Science Daily, 10/4/17 - "The study found that both black and green tea changed the ratio of intestinal bacteria in the animals: The percentage of bacteria associated with obesity decreased, while bacteria associated with lean body mass increased ... It was known that green tea polyphenols are more effective and offer more health benefits than black tea polyphenols since green tea chemicals are absorbed into the blood and tissue ... Our new findings suggest that black tea, through a specific mechanism through the gut microbiome, may also contribute to good health and weight loss in humans ... The results suggest that both green and black teas are prebiotics, substances that induce the growth of good microorganisms that contribute to a person's well-being"

Cannabis consumption increases violent behavior in young people in psychiatric care - Science Daily, 10/7/17 - "sustained used of cannabis is associated with an increase in violent behaviour in young people after discharge from a psychiatric hospital ... the use of cannabis resulted in future violent behaviour and not the reverse (for example, a violent person might use cannabis following an episode of violent behaviour to reduce their tension) ... chronic cannabis users have deficits in the prefrontal cortex, a part of the brain that inhibits impulsive behaviour"

Vitamin D protects against severe asthma attacks - Science Daily, 10/3/17 - "Vitamin D is thought to protect against such attacks by boosting immune responses to respiratory viruses and dampening down harmful airway inflammation ... vitamin D supplementation resulted in: ... a 30 per cent reduction in the rate of asthma attacks requiring treatment with steroid tablets or injections ... a 50 per cent reduction in the risk of experiencing at least one asthma attack requiring Accident and Emergency Department attendance and/or hospitalisation" - See vitamin D at Amazon.com.

Abstracts from this week:

Elevated Admission Potassium Levels and 1-Year and 10-Year Mortality Among Patients With Heart Failure - Am J Med Sci. 2017 Sep;354(3):268-277 - "Among hospitalized patients with HF, admission K > 5.5mEq/L was independently associated with increased short- and long-term mortality, whereas serum K ≥ 5mEq/L but ≤ 5.5mEq/L was not independently associated with worse outcomes"

Egg consumption, cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes - Eur J Clin Nutr. 2017 Sep 27 - "High-quality intervention studies have found nonsignificant effects of increasing the consumption of eggs on risk markers for CVD and T2D in healthy subjects and subjects with T2D. The risk associations found in the observational studies are more likely to be attributed to a dietary pattern often accompanying high egg intake and/or the cluster of other risk factors in people with high egg consumption. Dietary patterns, physical activity and genetics affect the predisposition of CVD and T2D more than a single food item as eggs. In conclusion, up to seven eggs per week can safely be consumed, but in patients with established CVD or T2D only with special emphasis on a healthy lifestyle"

Serum Potassium Is Positively Associated With Stroke and Mortality in the Large, Population-Based Malmö Preventive Project Cohort - Stroke. 2017 Oct 3 - "Serum potassium, measured in early mid-life, was linearly associated with both incidence of ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage and all-cause mortality. An interaction with serum sodium implies that factors related to electrolyte balance and incident hypertension may be mediating factors" - See potassium citrate at Amazon.com.

Pomegranate Extract Alters Breast Cancer Stem Cell Properties in Association with Inhibition of Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition - Nutr Cancer. 2017 Oct 4:1-11 - "Cancer stem cells (CSCs) ... The ability of PE to suppress CSCs can be exploited in the prevention of breast cancer" - See pomegranate extract at Amazon.com.

Neat Tech Stuff / "How To's":

The 2017 Roku Lineup is Now on Amazon - Cord Cutter, 10/8/17 - "Have you been thinking about getting a new 2017 Roku Payer? Well, now you can find them on Amazon starting today. They are a little hidden right now and you have to search for them but we have links to them here: (Note some are for pre-order and others are for sale now. Roku says they will be available for sale on Amazon today so hopefully if you preorder they will ship soon.)"

More alkaline water options.  Just search Google for "alkaline water machine near me".  I found out that they all seem to work according to a new pH meter I bought.  The problem was that an old pH meter that I used for yogurt years ago was unreliable.  I just go by time on the yogurt these days.  This is my favorite way to dispense it though.
