Coffee lovers face lower dementia risk - MSNBC, 2/3/09 - "among 1,400 Finnish adults followed for 20 years, those who drank three to five cups of coffee per day in middle-age were two-thirds less likely than non-drinkers to develop dementia, including Alzheimer's disease"

Heart Rate Predicts Women's Heart Risk - WebMD, 2/3/09 - "among women with the highest heart rates (greater than 76 beats per minute) were more likely to suffer coronary events such as a heart attack than women with the lowest resting pulse rates (62 beats per minute or less)"

Insulin May Protect Mind, Memory - WebMD, 2/2/09 - "lower insulin levels were enhanced by adding Avandia, which increases the body's sensitivity to insulin. Study authors say the discovery that diabetes drugs shield nerve junctions in the brain from memory loss offers new hope for fighting the disease" - Note:  Avandia is the one with increased heart disease.  I've been taking Actos (pioglitazone) for prevention.  See pioglitazone at OffshoreRx1.com.

Drug Found That Could Reduce Risk Of Alzheimer's - Science Daily, 2/2/09 - "daily injections of hydroxyfasudil ... Both dosed groups performed significantly better than control-group rats given saline solution. On this same test, the high-dose group showed the best learning (fewest total errors) and best working memory (measured two different ways)"

Shedding light on vitamin D deficiency ‘crisis’ - MSNBC, 2/2/09 - "the vitamin D story is much bigger than an unexpected case of rickets. Deficiency in vitamin D, a fat-soluble supplement needed to maintain normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood, does appear to be a growing problem. Some medical experts even claim we are suffering through a vitamin D deficiency "crisis."" - See vitamin D at Amazon.com.

'Normal' levels of bad cholesterol may be too high - USA Today, 2/1/09 - "Current guidelines recommend that doctors prescribe a statin for anyone whose LDL is 100 milligrams per deciliter of blood or higher ... half of all heart attacks are occurring below 100 (mg/dl) ... the study supports the wisdom of a push to drive LDL even lower, in many cases down to 70 mg/dl"

Doctors use diabetes test A1C as diagnostic tool- USA Today, 2/1/09 - "Within the next six months, a consensus by several leading diabetes organizations will lead to the publication of guidelines recommending the A1C test as a diagnostic tool for type 2 diabetes ... The benefit of the A1C test is that it can be taken at any time of day and is not thrown off by events of the day ... People who don't have diabetes typically have about a 6 or less reading"

Chemists Shed Light On Health Benefits Of Garlic - Science Daily, 1/30/09 - "Along with onions, leeks and shallots, garlic is a species in the family Alliaceae. All of these other plants contain a compound that is very similar to allicin, but they do not have the same medicinal properties. Dr. Pratt and his colleagues believe that this is due to a slower rate of decomposition of the allicin analogs in the onions, leaks and shallots, which leads to a lower level of sulfenic acid available to react as antioxidants with radicals"

Soy Consumption Linked to Colorectal Cancer Risk in Postmenopausal Women - Medscape, 1/29/09 - "For each 5-g/day increment in dietary intake of soy as measured by dry weight (equivalent to approximately 1 oz [28.35 g] tofu/day), there was an 8% reduction in risk ... Compared with women in the lowest tertile of soy intake, those in the highest tertile had a multivariate relative risk (RR) of 0.67 ... were similar for soy protein and isoflavone intakes"

Analysis Shows Sertraline, Escitalopram More Effective Than 10 Other New-Generation Antidepressants - Doctor's Guide, 1/29/09 - "Sertraline and escitalopram were found to be the best antidepressants overall in terms of efficacy and acceptability. Sertraline was more efficacious than duloxetine (by 30%); than both duloxetine and fluvoxamine (by 27% for both); 25% fluoxetine (by 25%); paroxetine (by 22%); and reboxetine (by 85%) ... Escitalopram was more efficacious than duloxetine (by 33%); fluoxetine (by 32%); fluvoxamine (by 35%); paroxetine (by 30%); and reboxetine (by 95%). As with sertraline and escitalopram, mirtazapine and venlafaxine were also more efficacious than these other drugs ... However, escitalopram and sertraline showed the best profile of acceptability, leading to significantly fewer discontinuations of treatment than did duloxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, reboxetine, and venlafaxine"

Chondroitin Slows Progression And Relieves Symptoms Of Knee Osteoarthritis - Science Daily, 1/29/09 - "long-term administration of CS over 2 years can prevent joint structure degradation in patients with knee OA ... Joint space loss was significantly reduced in the CS group, fewer patients had progression of joint space width, and CS reduced pain in those taking it compared to the placebo group. CS was well-tolerated and there were no significant differences in the frequency of adverse events between the two groups" - See chondroitin sulfate at Amazon.com.

Statins' Adverse Effects Documented - Science Daily, 1/29/09 - "Coenzyme Q10 ("Q10") is a compound central to the process of making energy within mitochondria and quenching free radicals. However, statins lower Q10 levels because they work by blocking the pathway involved in cholesterol production – the same pathway by which Q10 is produced. Statins also reduce the blood cholesterol that transports Q10 and other fat-soluble antioxidants ... "The loss of Q10 leads to loss of cell energy and increased free radicals which, in turn, can further damage mitochondrial DNA," said Golomb, who explained that loss of Q10 may lead to a greater likelihood of symptoms arising from statins in patients with existing mitochondrial damage – since these people especially rely on ample Q10 to help bypass this damage" - My favorite is QH-Absorb by Jarrow.

UV Light-enhanced Tooth Bleaching Dangerous To Eyes and Skin, Study Shows - Science Daily, 1/29/09 - "The light treatment gives absolutely no benefit over bleaching without UV, and damages skin and eyes up to four times as much as sunbathing"

Low-fat dairy linked to blood pressure improvements: Study - Nutra USA, 1/29/09 - "The systolic and diastolic blood pressures of those with the highest average level of low-fat dairy intake (631 grams per day) were 4.2 and 1.8 mmHg lower than for participants with the lowest average intakes (3.1 grams per day)"

Plums Poised To Give Blueberries Run For The Money - Science Daily, 1/28/09 - "one relatively inexpensive plum contains about the same amount of antioxidants as a handful of more expensive blueberries ... one benefit the team found was that the phytonutrients in plums inhibited in vitro breast cancer growth without adversely affecting normal cell growth"

Bisphenol A May Linger in Body - WebMD, 1/28/09 - "Now there's evidence that BPA might be in our water as well as in our food, and that it lingers in our fat tissues ... people with higher urinary BPA levels have more medical disorders. Another intriguing study from 2008 showed that BPA -- at normal levels of exposure -- disrupts a hormone involved in insulin sensitivity and diabetes. And a 2007 study showed that obese people are much more likely to suffer insulin resistance if they have high fat levels of organic pollutants ... Imagine if what we think is caused by obesity is actually caused by persistent organics in the fat of obese people ... If they don't have the organics, they don't have the diabetes. That would be huge"

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Ease Depressive Symptoms Related To Menopause - Science Daily, 1/28/09 - "Their study, published in the February issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, presents the first evidence that omega-3 supplements are effective for treating common menopause-related mental health problems ... Test results before and after the eight-week period indicate that omega-3s significantly improved the condition of women suffering symptoms of psychological distress and mild depression ... Women with hot flashes also noted that their condition improved after consuming omega-3s. At baseline, the number of daily hot flashes was 2.8 and dropped by an average of 1.6 in the group taking omega-3s and by 0.5 in the control group" - See Mega Twin EPA at Amazon.com and Jarrow Max DHA at Amazon.com.

Flaxseed combined with low-dose estrogen therapy preserves bone tissue in ovariectomized rats - Menopause. 2009 Jan 29 - "Flaxseed + low-dose estrogen therapy resulted in the highest bone mineral density and peak load at the lumbar vertebrae, with no effect on bone mineral density or strength in the tibia and femur. Flaxseed and flaxseed + low-dose estrogen therapy resulted in significantly higher relative levels of alpha-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid and lower levels of linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, and n-6/n-3 ratio in the lumbar vertebrae and tibia compared with all other groups" - See flax seed at Amazon.com.

Vitamin D Deficiency in Older Men - J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2009 Jan 27 - "Vitamin D deficiency is common in older men, and is especially prevalent in obese, sedentary men living at higher latitudes.
