Recent Longevity News for the seven days ending 1/31/07.  You should consult your doctor if you are taking any medications.

Sorry, it was a slow week for anti-aging news:

Magnesium could help build bone strength - Reuters, 1/29/07 - "The girls given magnesium showed significantly greater bone mineral content in the hip than those who took placebo ... there is strong evidence that young US women aren't getting enough magnesium, and that the number who is deficient in the mineral is on the rise" - See Magnesium products at iHerb.

Hormones safer for younger women, experts advise - CNN, 1/25/07 - "the WHI involved women with an average age of 63, long past menopause, and Utian said that factor may have affected the study. Women typically enter menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age being 51"

Beta Blockers Are Less Effective Than Other Drugs For First-line Treatment Of High Blood Pressure - Science Daily, 1/24/07 - "they were not as good at reducing death or the severity of disease as other classes of drugs. Drugs that perform better include thiazides, calcium channel blockers and renin angiotensin system inhibitors ... The beta blocker given to 75% of these participants was atenolol" - Click here for why I feel Micardis® (telmisartan) should be the first line treatment for hypertension.

Multivitamin/Multimineral Supplements review - ConsumerLab.com, 1/24/07 - "Eleven multis for people and one for pets failed ConsumerLab.com tests. A number of products were short important vitamins or minerals. A children's vitamin Contained too much vitamin A — exceeding tolerable levels. A women's vitamin was contaminated with lead. And three products failed to break apart properly, suggesting that they might go through the body not fully used"

Abstracts from this week's Doctor's Guide Nutrition/Dietetics:

Telmisartan reduced blood pressure and HOMA-IR with increasing plasma leptin level in hypertensive and type 2 diabetic patients - Diabetes Res Clin Pract. 2007 Jan 18 - "Fasting IRI and HOMA-IR were significantly decreased after Telmisartan treatment, suggesting the improved insulin sensitivity" - See the top of my hypertension page for reasons I feel Micardis® (telmisartan) should be the first line treatment for hypertension.  See telmisartan at OffshoreRx1.com.

Effect of 3-year folic acid supplementation on cognitive function in older adults in the FACIT trial: a randomised, double blind, controlled trial - Lancet. 2007 Jan 20;369(9557):208-16 - "Folic acid supplementation for 3 years significantly improved domains of cognitive function that tend to decline with age" - See iHerb folic acid products.
