Recent Longevity News for the seven days ending 12/4/02:

The Coming Epidemic of Arthritis - Time Magazine, 12/9/02 - "If you are within even shouting distance of middle age, chances are you have osteoarthritis, a degenerative disorder in which the cartilage—the natural shock absorber that cushions the insides of your joints—begins to break down. Doctors used to think of it as a disease of old age, but they now believe that this form of arthritis, the most common of about 100 types, begins its relentless, initially painless course when you're still in your 30s, 20s or even younger"

Food Combo as Good as Cholesterol Drugs - WebMD, 12/4/02 - "After eating all of these foods for a month, study participants dropped their "bad" LDL cholesterol levels by 29% ... Soy-based ... Sticky fiber ... Plant-sterol enriched margarine ... Nuts"

Metabolic Syndrome Predicts Heart Failure - ABC News, 12/3/02 - "men with metabolic syndrome are at significantly greater risk of dying from a heart attack ... The metabolic syndrome is really a cluster of at least three of the following signs: ... Abdominal fat — in most men, a 40-inch waist or greater ... High blood sugar — at least 110 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) after fasting ... High triglicerides — at least 150 mg/dL in the bloodstream ... Low HDL — less than 40 mg/dL ... And blood pressure of 130/85 or higher"

Study Raises Questions About HRT In Diabetic Women - Intelihealth, 12/3/02 - "In diabetic women who hadn't experienced a recent heart attack, HRT was associated with a 16 percent lower risk of heart attack"

Estrogen Therapy Curbs Body Fat Mass In Postmenopausal Women - Doctor's Guide, 12/3/02 - "One-year oestrogen treatment decreases intra-abdominal and intrapelvic fat compartments in healthy early postmenopausal women"

Micro-CT Scans Provide 3-D Proof of Estrogen's Bone Benefit - Medscape, 12/3/02 - "A three-dimensional glimpse of bone micro-architecture suggests that estrogen replacement is an effective treatment for osteoporosis because it "protects and retains bone structure, rather than laying down new bone,""

Nutrients Are Key to Preventing Cancer - Intelihealth, 12/3/02 - "Cancer doesn't just arise overnight. A few tiny cells gone wrong slowly grow over decades. Whether the result is a life-threatening tumor depends on genes and environment including food ... Up to 35 percent of cancers are related to dietary habits ... people who eat lots of fruits and vegetables generally are skinnier. Obesity increases risks of cancers of the uterus, gallbladder and possibly colon and prostate, while a large weight gain after reaching adulthood is linked to breast cancer ... Not everybody gets equal benefit from nutrient-rich diets, a discrepancy that probably points to genetic variability. For example, scientists studying lung cancer rates in part of China found people with the lowest cancer risks also were genetically deficient in an enzyme that metabolizes certain nutrients in cruciferous vegetables"

Can Herbs Combat Inflammation? - Dr. Weil, 12/3/02 - "Take 400 to 600 milligrams of turmeric extracts (available in tablets or capsules) three times per day or as directed on the product label. Whole turmeric is more effective than isolated curcumin, its major constituent. Look for products standardized for 95% curcuminoids. Be patient: the full benefit takes two months to develop. Don’t use turmeric if you have gallstones or bile duct dysfunction" - See iHerb (5% discount code "qc") and Vitacosticon turmeric products.  Also, see my inflammation page.  Many diseases have been associated with inflammation.  For example:

Heart Risks Tied Directly To Mercury In Nine-Country Study - Doctor's Guide, 12/2/02 - "High mercury content in some fish may diminish the cardioprotective effects associated with consumption of omega-three fatty acids fish ... While the toenail mercury level was directly associated with risk of myocardial infarction, the fish oil level was inversely associated with this risk"

Ability To Cope With Stress May Play A Role In Cancer Progression - Intelihealth, 12/2/02 - "Studies have shown that people who adopt active coping strategies have better immune function and lower cortisol levels, and just the opposite for people who use passive coping strategies"

High-Heat Foods Could Be Bad For You - CBS News, 11/28/02 - "browned, crispy foods, like that Thanksgiving turkey you just ate, are loaded with proteins called AGEs which interact with sugar in the body to cause hardening of the arteries ... AGEs are deposited everywhere over time — in the kidneys, in the vessels of the eyes and they have been implicated in all of these major complications from diabetes" - Alteon is working on ALT-711, which is an advanced glycation end product (AGE) reverser.  Carnosine and acetyl-l-carnitine are supplements believed to be advanced glycation end product (AGE) inhibitors. - Ben

ERT Use May Improve Mood, Cognitive Performance in Postmenopausal Women - Medscape, 11/28/02 - "ERT [estrogen replacement therapy] users were significantly less depressed and had lower levels of anger than non-ERT users or men, the authors note. In addition, the ERT group performed better on tests of verbal fluency and working memory than the other groups. Men had lower levels of anger and had better working memory than women who did not use ERT"
